Dubz reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in 74-gun ship by Gaetan Bordeleau - 1:24
In this post, I asked myself: How do we access shot lockers?
In the drawings, we see the shape, we can figure how they fill it, but how dis they empty it?
The answer will be in the next post.
We can find the beginning of the answer in the drawings of l' Artésien.

Thank you Jorge,
Thank you Moab, taking pictures is also a part of the construction, but looking at the next picture, I asked myself which side is up?

Thank you for your kind words and all the "likes", dear friends.
The cannons are finally placed inside the model; all are movable and able to adjust in height. Now the Royal Katherine looks much more like a warship.
Have a Happy New Year 2020 and plenty of health, love and joy.

Hope to get more suggestions

You might get more insight into construction of a Swan class sixth rate using The Fully Framed Model series of books. Frames are not all the same width all the way up.

Just another quick update on the progress so far.
I have finished the planking of the lower counter and am working my way through the planking around the sweep port openings.
The last 2 photo's show the (very basic) jigs I use to pre-bend the planks at the bow and to pre-bend and twist the planks at the stern.
Here are some photo's..

The ships cranes; photo one is how they are supposed to look,
the kit ones, (see grey blob) actually come with a crank which I cut off and put on the Pontos replacement which is on the fret but no instructions whatsoever. I had to change one of the tackle as the pontos kit one went somewhere into space.
finally the winch controls which I built out of spares

Masking,
line marking then
dry transfers (I’m happy with the gaps in the lines as I’ll be weathering those bits The mask lifted tiny bits of paint from the metal fittings which I’ll repair later. The 1mm length markers are pretty cool.

Now I can park the airbrush for this part of the hull I can remove all the tape and show off the interior. Blue grey filter on the blue bits and some more grunge to dull down the boot strap.

Dubz reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
Hello Jan,
yes, there is visible only front part of these cannons so I have decided not to make unnecessary details on their aft side. Some of them I even had to shorten because there are reinforcement and stiffeners inside the hull.
On the other hand, the cannons on upper decks will be made in great detail, because everything will be well visible.

Thank you dear friends for your comments and "likes".
I am pleased you enjoy my work.
Now I am finishing the cannons for lower and middle deck. It remains to make 32 smaller cannons for the upper and quarter deck but 18 of them will be fully detailed with rigging. I have given a detailed tutorial to this thread some time ago if you are interested in "how to do".
I have to admit that I am totally bored of such monotonous work.... Oh yes, I told to myself in past - "I will never build a three decker again"... Well, and I couldn't resist it again....😃

Dubz reacted to Mike Y in Beavers Prize 1777 by Mike Y - 1:48 - POF - Hahn style
This was an interesting part of the build, though pretty repetitive. I am glad that I took internal planking first, it would be barely visible, and a good practice before doing an external planking.
One more time thanks to Chuck for showing how to edge bend. Got the hang of it, no more broken planks, and I get quite close to desired shape from first or sometimes second attempt:
Got more Pfeil chisels, this time to simplify in-situ fairing. Works like a charm!
Closer to deck clamps it became harder to clamp, so some awkward arrangements were used:
The last streak was difficult. Even though I used tick marks, the last forward plank ended up a bit too narrow. Will be careful next time, does not worth re-doing this time.
A blade is used as a wedge to press planks into each other in the areas of some gaps. More glue to soak into the gap. It is cheating, I know
During the last few months I was sneaking to my modelling corner regularly (which is a challenge with a newborn), and managed to install all planks before the end of the year! Yay! I did not expect it to take this long though - with an average of 4-5 hours per streak and 14 streaks it sums up to 60-ish hours.
So here is how it looks today, before treenailing / fairing / smoothing / trimming.
When in display case, light coming from the bottom of the case goes through frames and makes an interesting pattern on the planks:
There is plenty of dust over the model, that I will need to carefully remove after sanding.
Hope to finish it in a near future and get to less repetitive parts (breast hooks, mast steps, deck structures, etc etc). But before that I need to decide on a finish to use (or maybe no finish at all), will make some test pieces and try all the sanding sealers that I bought last year.
Also I got a surprising color deviation in planks, even though they are all cut from a few sheets of castello box, and sheets had no obvious discoloration.
Maybe it is a side effect of heat bending, may go away after final sanding. Anyway it is not so bad, shows individual planks. A bit of deviation is good!

Dubz reacted to bolin in New Member from Sweden
Hello all,
I just became a member after a few weeks of reading and browsing this great site. I'm a novice model ship builder from Sweden who recently decide to try this fascinating hobby. In a way I have been drawn to ships and ship models since I was a kid. I think that it was a trip to the Viking ship museum in Roskilde Denmark and the paper model I bought and built after that that sparked the interest. But I never continued then. I did some plastic models and some model air planes in my early teens, but that is more or less the extent of my modelling experience.
I plan to take it slow, not overreaching my still non-existing skills. I started by ordering a kit (Billing Boats Will Everard). But due to shipping problems just before Christmas it has not arrived yet. I also read some build logs here on the site and learned that it is not necessarily a "beginner model" after all, despite Billings labeling. So I went and bought a BlueJacket Swampscott Dory from a local hobby store. That kit seem to be more in line with my skills and should not take to long (hopefully) to finish.
Cheers
/Tobias
PS. My "pen name" is Swedish for bow line and the picture is of a sail from a medieval long ship with the bow line set.

Getting closer to a finish. Added the decals and Aces II ejection seats. Next will be adding a few landing/navigation lights, a dull coat to seal the decals, then last add the ordnance.

Here is some ordnance on display and panel line accents. The photos reveal some touch ups I need to do. Funny how photos can show things that escape the naked eye.

Happy New Years to you Chuck and everyone else too!
I completed the bollard timbers a while back. While doing the counter and wales I constantly flip
the hull upside-down, spin it around and just manipulate it a lot. So to be safe I tucked them away
and kept them off until the last possible moment. If all goes well I'll be putting them on later today.
I'm also re-doing the forward most gun port opening to be more inline with the plans.

My resin castings from Syren arrived a couple of days ago and they are great.
I can't believe sharp and nice the fine detail is. They came in a nice sturdy box
which they were returned to and tucked safely away until needed.
I also received the chapter two laser cut set in cherry. These are my fall back
if I have issues when I attempt to scratch them.
The gun ports have all been painted red ochre so hopefully some planking will get done this weekend.
