Welcome to MSW Steve! As both Mark and Joe have already said and pointed out, this is the right place for help on figuring out those tricky parts. Being able to share your build with others adds a lot of fun to building these models. I am looking forward to seeing your pIctures.

    hello all

this is my first time posting, back in November 2015 I begun my first ship the hms victory panart 1/78
before October of last year I had no interest in models or historic ships.
as a joiner by trade of 17yrs a friend of the family asked me could I build a display cabinet to hold his hms bounty
I agreed and on arriving at his home to get the sizes required I instantly feel in love with the ship and the sheer work that had went into the model.
after building the display cabinet I started researching these ships and only then discovered there was kits out there for building these.
I have read some of the threads and see a lot of posts advising not to jump in at the deep end with a kit like the victory
    (now you tell me lol)
however with my joinery backround and access to specialized machinery I have successfully built the ship up to completion of the standing rigging studying hard and overcoming challenges such as the planking and copper plating and am currently beginning the running rigging.
I have learnt so much so far and built a complete different skill set and had lots of fun along the way there is no turning back and have already purchased my second build but promise only to look inside the box for now lol.
I would like to add sails so I have purchased a sail kit from mantua and am studying the plans very carefully before fitting yardarms with sails attached.

I live in northern Ireland and can not find any local model shops that sell fittings etc for these ships I don't know anyone in my circle of friends interested in model ships and no examples to look at other than the bounty .
I would greatly apprieciate chatting with anyone who has built the panart 1/78 victory especially with sails
I will attempt to attach  below some pics of my progress so far.
I must admit I am a little bit stuck at the moment as to where the sails are made fast but 99%of the fun so far has been overcoming these challenges

Rob, it looks like you are off to a great start on your first build. I admit I too am curious about your hook and rubber band set up you have. It does look like a good way of holding those battens in place. I'm assuming from looking at the pictures that there is just enough tension to hold the wood in place and not bend it out of shape.

I think I will follow along and watch your build.

Mark I found the meaning of the line you were looking for.
This is exactly as in the other picture where the rail is made as 1 part and as large as the top.
Obviously this is not the real method but this is how a beginner would draw it.

NEAR DISASTER!!!  The rubber bands put a little to much strain on mold #6 and caused it to buckle a little on the starboard side.  When I tried straightening it out, it cracked in half horizontally.  Being a former Damage Control Officer, I quickly put my skills to use.  I cut and glued shores to each side of the mold, but I need to be more careful in the future.  I think I'm just going to shore up all of the molds on the outboard sides to prevent similar casualties.  The center of the molds are strengthened well-beyond what was suggested in the instructions, but I neglected to do anything to the outboard sides.  Dang.  Oh well, new day, new lesson learned.

That all said, I removed the rubber bands and it looks like the chines are shaped the way they are supposed to be.  The only thing that troubles me is that the chine doesn't completely "sit" in the molds' grooves so I'll need to tackle that problem when I glue the sides on.

At any rate, I can report that the rubber band/hook technique was a success, despite the problem.

Next comes the tedious task of tapering the chine logs and the rabbetts for the bottom planking that will commence once I get the sides glued on.

    Sam and E.J.,
I got the idea for using the hooks and rubber bands from the Seaways' Ships in Scale article series on the Willie L. Bennett Skipjack (published May through Dec 2004) written by Kurt Van Dahm.  They held the chine logs in place against the molds perfectly; no weird twisting or unnatural curves.  Also, I used 5-minute epoxy and pins to hold everything in place.  So far, I'm happy with the way it's turning out.  I'm going to remove the rubber bands tonight so I'm crossing my fingers that everything holds together!!!  I'll report whether it worked or not because I'm also curious to see how the shape turns out without the tension of the bands.

E.J., There is still plenty of room at the bar for you, enjoy the complimentary pretzels.

    Thanks for the likes!!

    Cheers!!

After two days of building canons.... they are still not done.... however they are close. I got the carriages built and most of the rigging ready. I ran out of the blocks I needed but fortunately I placed an order with Chuck last week so I should have more in later this week. Drilled the openings for the barrels and installed the decorative wreaths. Should be able to get them rigged up this week and then I can build the forecastle deck and all the major planking will be completed.

Sal, thanks again.  Good to know you are watching!  I already modified the post to alert unsuspecting viewers.  Although we are allowed a  number of mistakes with a ship with this level of details (only the builder sees them), there is a limit.
This is a reminder of the importance of reading ahead in the manual.  Chapter 7 (p.28) says:  "Use a 3/16” x 1/16” thick strip as your first bulwark plank. This plank should fit nicely since you should have 3/16” of space from the top of the bulkheads to the top of the gun port sills."   I think it's very important to maintain the 3/16 space from the top of the bulkheads to the top of the sills because it affects all gun ports. Unfortunately in my case it is not maintained for some bulkheads.  (Yes, the sills are already glued).   Before continuing, can someone clarify this line in the manual (p.11) :  "The top of the gun port sills should be perfectly flat. Do not slope them inboard or outboard"?  (The top of the gun port sills is also the bottom of the gun ports).
Does this mean the top of the sills should be:

    1)  perpendicular to the bulkhead?
    2)  parallel to the ground?
    3)  parallel to the top of the bulkhead?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.  I chose (2) but I think that was wrong, in which case I would start all over again as opposed to try to fix what I have.  More fun.

    Third base....

hervie, thinking more about your question I went back and reviewed what I did and looked at your pictures a little closer.  First the top of the batten should have been aligned with the second mark down on the bulkhead.  I think you have the top lined up with the third mark down which, like you said, is for the wale.  You still might be able to use that though.  The gun port sill is made from 1/4"x 3/16"  stock, with the 3/16" side being vertical, if the distance between the two marks is 3/16" (I can't remember off hand if it is) you should be able to sit the sill right on the batten.  So essentially you did mark the bottom of the sill.

Now that the brain cells are firing again what I did was, I lined up the BOTTOM, not the top, of the batten with the second mark down.  That way I could place the top of the sill up against the bottom of the batten, that I had left in place.  I also think I turned the ship upside down when I set them so I had gravity working with me.

I hope all this makes sense and sorry for the confusion, I'll just go back in my corner and watch.

    Happy Independence Day, Fellow Shipwrights!

It was a very productive weekend.  I solved my keelson issue, glued the skeg, foregrip shoe, and skeg battons together, glued that assembly to the keelson, attached the keel assembly to the build board, and glued the chine logs.  It actually has the shape of a ship!!  I know I have a long way to go, but I feel like I'm finally on the right track.  Figuring out the angles to cut the chine at the transom and the inner stem was very tricky, and I ended up just eyeballing it (for lack of a better way)...is there a tried-and-true method for this for next time?  After reading the Van Dahm article, I used his method of the cup hooks and rubber bands...worked like a dream.

Thanks in advance for the feedback, and I will see you in the fleet!

After much hand-wringing and AMAZING customer service from Model Expo, I fixed my keelson issue.  You can follow the issue here: keelson question but I wanted to include some photos (in case someone else runs into this issue, which presumably, someone will.

Summary: The new keelson I got from Model Expo was the exact same size as the one I had originally, and did not match the plan (presumably, the laser cut is different than it used to be).  I used the sprue from the keelson laser-cut sheet to match the arc of the keelson and sandwiched three of them together and glued the new part to the bottom of my keelson, traced the line of the keelson from the drawing, and then shaped it with my Dremel sanding drum in the Dremel drill press.

Finally!  I'm ready to move along and actually start building a Skipjack!  While waiting for the keelson issue to be resolved, I started pre-cutting parts I knew I needed soon (transom, transom stiffeners, skeg, foregrip shoe, skeg battens; they still need some slight trimming once they are in place).  Hopefully I'll have some new photos by the end of the three-day weekend!!
Note:  Not TWO SECONDS after I took the last photo, I spilled an entire glass of wine all over EVERYTHING within a 3 foot radius!!!!  Now my keelson, skeg, etc. is a nice shade of Cabernet.  Good thing this part of the model will be painted...

Well.. it was back and forth.. cutting, breaking or feeding the carpet monster today.... but the gallery tops are done. The Admiral approves, which is good since I'm building this for her.  So Happy Dance...

I've only tacked the roof tops in place as I'm going to fiddle with some settings over the next couple of weeks and see if I can get better parts for the decorations.  Doubtful, but worth a shot or two... I'm thinking a nice Kentucky Bourbon.

    Pictures below.

Carvings are started and I'll work on them at a leisurely pace. But for now, I'm going to start the lower deck.  Less fiddly, methinks.   But first.. I need to refresh myself on the plans, make some spales, and put in a small dedication plaque.   Did I mention, clean the workshop and do maintenance on the power tools?
