    Hi Johnhoward

Great progress with your St. Louis! While I`m struggling with some smaller issues at home (need a new water boiler for my bathroom....), I have to make a little break with the Cairo

    Hi johnhoward

So they were meant as ventilation funnels, i got it now! The position of them should be good to see in the Bob Hill plans, but there is a difference for the ventilation grate. In his side view frames plan the grate seems to be roof shaped, as I made it, in his plansheet "Frame 72 with interior" he shows the same part flat as you made it. I can still make that change, would be no problem, but I must be sure to make the correct decision!

    Where was this located??
I`m ordering all the wood material for the Cairo this upcoming week, so this would be good to know before I continue, dont want to go wrong
By talking about the stove, found some pics from the Southern Belle stove

    Hi johnhoward
Thanks for "lining up" the participants of the project!
You did understand the request for the steam exhaust system correct. So I dont have to worry about the stacks for the engine, and build some tubes from the engine via the preheater back to the big funnels from the boilers. Paddlewheel icing will be no problem here in Vienna, but the water preheating system will be made.

The drawing for the 12-pdr came from the civilwar-website, I scaled it down to the correct size of the barrel and made the carriage from the scaled drawings. Would be interesting if my scaled drawing will fit to Bob`s TurboCad drawings!

    Best regards

    Hi johnhoward

Would be great, to know the names behind the project
Now that we see so many of participants to the project we can imagine the size of the model, really big!
What I miss in all the drawings is the steam exhaust from the engine. I have read that the exhaust was used for pre-heating the water intake, but steam had to leave the system after that. Had the City class ships usual funnels trough the top of the superstructure? And where have they been placed?

    Regards

I would not consider this as bad engineering, but space saving practice. Even if the City Class ships were not too small, space is always limited in ships. And taking water from the rivers was usual practice too in european ships, although the water in the danube or in swiss lakes is a lot cleaner than the muddy rivers they were used to work. So the mud drums make sense, and the "extra" steam drum above the boilers is in my mind an extra for the conditions this ships were used in. They allow a bit more of volume for the water, and extra volume for steam. A similar steam drum was used on the boiler for the swiss RIGI, but even smaller.
The photo shows the RIGI Boiler during resauration

Attached are recent photos of recent progress on our Shipcrafters' model of the "USS St. Louis" ironcladl. We are currently preparing to permanently lay the gun deck and separately finish the removable Hurricane Deck features. The boilers will be painted flat black and highlighted to reveal details.

Serious headway made on the fuselage these past couple of days. The port and starboard sides were done first, and triple checked for alignment. They were then joined at the nose with what will become the engine mount later on in the build. Horizontal formers were then placed on the top and bottom along the length of the fuselage. This will end tomorrow with the joining of the two fuselage sides at the tail. Note the little metal tensioner eyes in the corners. Wires and turnbuckles will go in there. Along the top will be run a series of stringers from the tail to the back side of the cockpit. Such fun keeping this all aligned!  I had better finish this soon so I can catch up with the other Syren builds!  ;-)

    Hi Nils
I have been in awe of your courage first in taking on a project of this size then to have completed her in such a short time and the way you overcame each obstacle with a quick sketch - then on to the next one. I have admired your metalworking skills in particular and learnt a lot on the journey. I would be a very proud and contented man to move on leaving something of the like of KwdG behind me in this disposable world.
Congratulations and thanks for the Journey. PeteB

    Hi Greg,
Thanks so much for your kind words and compliment...
yes, you are so right, and I also think this model deserves display in the living area of our house, if only there were the space of appr. 150 cm to set it up. The installation of 1 or 2 halogen spots from the ceiling for illumination would not be a problem though...
    Thanks again for your thoughts...,

Wow! sanding time, what fun, almost the highlight of the build, only watching paint dry beats it. I hope its hand sanding, doing it by machine is so yesterday.

Many thanks to Gerhard, Druxey, Kevin, Ian, Steve and Don,
all the positive response to this completed build is very encouraging to me and making my day...

    Gerhard,
its a pleasure sharing with fellow builders, thanks to all that followed...

    Druxey,
all suggestions are welcome, the making of the flags I know should have been a bit better. Thanks for the reminder, I`ll try to iron down a copied tranferfoil (with ink jet printer) to a fine weaved handkerchief fibre. Was just too "lazy" to try it out at this small scale, but it worked well on the 1:64 ensign flag of my "HMS Pegasus"

    Kevin,
    you are always welcome aboard...

    Ian,
    thanks for your nice words...

    Steve,
I`m glad you liked the building journey...

    Don,
many thanks for your appreciative words

Well.. the Death Star is in secure, orbital mode for now, Sam.   The inner bulwark planking is basic table saw for cut to length, hand finish to length, and hopefully in the next few days... sanding time.

This has been so much fun to watch!  Not only have you you achieved an astounding level of detail throughout, but with the meticulous paintwork and brass work, your model resembles the great builder's models done as presentations to their clients--I can picture this as the Office centerpiece of a fin-de-siecle shipping magnate...  Thank you for sharing this with us.
