Still a lot of work to do beginning with catch up sanding, Final hull dimensions are 36"L x 7"T x 8"W, my best guess at the final overall dimensions is 54"L x 51"T x 16"W. The only thing I am sure of is that the Captains quarters will have an American cherry deck, the sterncastle is African Mahogany and it will have 9 guns....

Another horrifying frame, we'll see how it goes, The keel is Red Oak, with Black Walnut hull planking. The lightning bolt pattern in hull is quarter sawed African Mahogany. Decking is Bubinga, hard to say right now what the rest will look like, I'll see where it takes me..    By the way , that's my lumber mill in the background...lol

Well, making a little progress on this build. Sterncastle is African Mahogany with Bubinga rails. Still have quite a bit of trim to do and some changes such as doors and possibly stairs, but beginning to look like something. Stairs and masts are Red Oak and the plan is to have a square rigged 2 master (I never know from one day till the next). I'm already thinking about my next ship...lol  Thank you all for the views and comments...    PS, I am obviously a bad photographer, hope you see what I see.

Hi Bob, I work in wood only and I suggested Aleene's because of it initial tack for parts that can't be clamped. There are other factors such as temperature , humidity and my lack of patience to hold a part till it quits moving...lol

Hi Richard, two things that really bothered me about Titebond was the shifting of a piece as it dried. The other was squeeze out when drying probably due to the shifting. Don't get me wrong Titebond is great for larger projects that require clamping, but for modeling, not so good.

    Hi Steve,
Thicker thread is for the standing rigging that is stays, shrouds
whereas thinner thread for running rigging.

You guys are going to make this decision for the next ship hard, aren't you?         And I thought it would just be a simple decision.. Roebuck or something French like L'Orient.   I figure why not go for tough ones....

John, the Roebuck also juxtaposes with quite a few American ships according to the history, as I recall.

A bit of an update... the rudder is ready for hanging.  The macro shows the problems but in real life it looks pretty good to my eye.  I actually had another one made but it hit the floor without my knowing it.  The pup (hah!!!!  at 3 years old, not a pup but she thinks she is) picked it up, and gave it back with unfortunately some deep teeth marks.  I had to laugh as I call her "my helping bud".

Anyway, I've got blue taped into position while I sort out the irons attached to the hull.

As always, critiques, comments, or general mayhem is welcome.

Since one of the early tasks, along with getting the first layer of planks onto the hull, is planking the decks, I have been playing around with trying something new (for me). I like the initial results and thought I would share it this morning.
I have always liked basswood planking, using the jumbo craft sticks (1" x 8"). It takes a nice edge and stains up quite nicely.

I also like to use black fishing line as caulking between each plank, as opposed to paper, or simply drawing in with a pencil. So the question became....
How can planking be done without fitting each and every single plank individually, and improve the technique of applying the caulking lines.
Here's what I came up with....
Created a rip fence jig for my mini table saw with a spacer shim.... the jig is set at a height to give me a perfect slot cut on each edge without passing through the thickness of the board.

Removing the shim allows me to get a second, perfectly spaced slot on each edge....

    The result looks like this....

My carving skills.... although I do love to carve, I'm leaning more toward using Skulpy for most of the ornamentation....much faster than shaping raw wood and can get the same details.  Some of the carvings I see are redundant and can be replicated with molds.... also kinda neat to do.  It's going to be a while before I get around to the fun part, although I might decide to play around with some of the figures to break up the monotony of forming and planking her hull.
Sounds like a plan for now.

    Here's the seemingly mandatory history:

This ship caught my attention the first time I saw the plans because it had a white flag. Laughed a bit until I researched it. But then the lines caught my eye. She's a 32 gun, frigate of the 8 pound gun class.

A bit of history... built 1755 in Brest. Not too much in the way of history available except for some highlights:

1756 - Carried troops to Quebec.

1757 - with Marsaint's divsion on the 21 Oct. A "most bloody conflict" with the British off Santo Domingo. No ships lost on either side, but a high casualty count.

1762 - expeditions against British shipping and the Sale pirates.

1778 - she was part of a small fleet in company with Le Belle Poule, Hirondelle and Le Coureur. They ran into Keppel's squadron. Licorne as surrounded and captured. La Belle Poule had a famous two-hour duel with the British and escaped to a nearby bay.

For the next five years it was known as HMS Licorne  in the British Navy.

1783 - Sold out of the service.

From the plans, it appears to be a good beginner scratchbuild. Clean lines, minimal carving. Some things from the Hahn plans needs changing such as the mast caps and the cannon rigging. I'm still researching via Boudriot and Frolich.

I'm planning on completely planking her, but that may change.

    Hello Everyone,

Several years after the excavation, we think we have enough information to attempt the reconstruction model of this early steamboat.  The excavation provided some wonderful information about the hull up to and including the deck and Dr. Kevin Crisman's research has provided the details of the appearance and arrangement of the upper works.

I've already started on two 1:24 waterline models for the Oklahoma Historical Society.  The finished models will be complete reconstructions with cutaways highlighting the machinery and other artifacts recovered during the excavation on the hull.

The next couple of months I will be focusing on the engine and boilers.  The research is ongoing and I'd love input from anyone interested in steamboats and steam engines.

Although we have a good idea about the overall appearance and layout of the vessel, there is very little info out there about construction details, joinery etc.  I would like to make these detailed and accurate as possible so any ideas that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Kurt, not sure how (industrial) you need your glue to be, but after years of furniture making I tried Titebond for my model building with sub par results. I found that Aleene's Tacky glue works great for modeling. Great initial grab and you can find it at Walmart ( imagine that) worth a try anyway.

Today, I, started by adding the piece of Birch ply to the Transom, wich I had pre-cut. Next I laid out the parts that make up the Base of the Keel. ( this was something that I wanted to get right this time around ) I then cut out the parts and installed them. I then Faired all the frames. Next will be to make up the Keel section and add the Garboard, Followed by the Sheer plank. then were off and running to plank the rest of the Boat. Here are the results
