Hi Mike,
There are plenty of experts on the site who will be able to advise you better, but If faced with this sort of situation, I would have tried some sanding sealer on a piece of scrap to see if that would help.
I think the trick is to keep it flat with weights.
Looks like have recovered from your difficulties very well. Once painted none of this should show.
Good luck

My experience mirrored 'barkingmads' response exactly, as does his comments.
Thank you to both Jim/Donna for a great product.
As soon as the £ climbs back to where it should be and the UK government have stopped trying to pay off the national debt with trade from the USA, I will be going back for Jim's sander.
Kind Regards

Hi Mike,
I am sure whatever way you build Chaperon it will be a great model.
Its frightening how much knowledge and skill there is in this community, that's why we keep coming back.
Looking forward to your next post.

Hi Bob,
Had an option, buy a camera or a Jim Byrnes saw.
No contest, the saw won hands down, even though postage and tax doubled the price.
The saw will increase in value, cameras are obsolete after a couple of months.
Looking forward to your next post

HI Mike
Another problem overcome, well done.
I am currently building a Ship-ways model Philadelphia. So far everything has been most impressive; design, instructions, a very well thought out model.
I have noticed though, that some of the larger pieces of thin wood do bare an uncanny resemblance to the type of wood you are having so much trouble with (deck).
However it does look a fine model. Anyway I have learnt something from your trials and tribulations, so thanks for posting.
