Hi Sjors, I'm glad to see your way of marking the gun ports. As I am going to be doing my Sovereigns gun ports in the next week, it gives me a type of roadmap to go by. Are you doing any extras in your Sovereign build as you advance forward? I'm thinking of having my lowest gun deck with all of the doors in the closed position to give it some contrasting view. Till later Mike.

Hi Dave this is RedDawg. Quite a few years ago when I was into plastic, before I got converted to wood, I was a member of IPMS. When I entered my builds in the competition during the closed door judging I won a couple of awards. But when one of the judges found out that I was a long haired bearded biker, he pulled my awards and told me I didn't really win. It was just a mistake in where the awards were placed. Two of them. When one of the other judges caught on to what was going on he corrected things. And then told me it was my being a biker that caused the problem. I told them that it was just a part of the lifestyle I chose, and did not bother me any. Just another day of life. Michael By the way I am building the Sovereign myself and you scratch builds have changed the way I am going to do my build. So thanks to you scratch builders my skill level is growing.

Mark I keep finding reasons that I'm glad that I chose this as a starter build. When I build the gun deck I'll measure between the printout and the cross section so that everything lines up better. I also find that the knees are tricky to notch without breaking. I went to a finer tooth on my scroll saw. The cut is smoother and easier to control. Thanks Mike. PS do you know of any ships boat kits that I can get to add to my Sovereign deck?

Thanks Pete. What helps me to hide the gaps is that as I build I go to the drier pieces and put a little glue in the gap then sand over them.

Well trial and error are what increases knowledge and skill. I thought that pine would be usable, but that was a failure. So the scrap pile grows. I tried poplar this time. Alittle soft but looks like it will do. Here is my first set of frames.

I love this hobby! As I complete each step I get a since of satisfaction. I still have the knees to do and the floor is just sitting in the shell. Even with the errors and mistakes I like what I'm seeing as I go. From the last photo you can see that somehow I am a little long in the floor frame. I'll have to do a little sanding to correct this. Though I built the floor off the ship the rafters that go to the knees will be fitted while in place. When I start the gun deck I will be more careful and precise being as some of that deck will be unplanked. Till the next post it's been a pleasure. Mike

Thanks Mark, it was the short cannons that I ordered. I measured the length of the cannon in the plans then looked at the length of the ones offered. It was by accident that I got the right ones. I had ordered the nine pound long carriages by mistake. But Mrs Wood sent me an email before filling my order showing me what I had done. So I was able to correct it. Mike

Hello Ships Carpenter. I agree with your thoughts of this as a practice beginning, I am also doing the same thing with my cross section. And I like your idea of using an exacto blade the way you did. I would have never thought of that. Now I have a new tool for my ship building. I'll be watching your build as you go along. Have fun Mike.

I am slowly building the lower floor of the Triton. I thought that I would show my home made guide for cutting slots. Still more pieces to cut out. I enjoy building by the kit, but this first try at scratch building is a pleasure. I ordered some wood and cannons from the Lumber Yard but I'm not sure if I ordered the right size. I got nine pounders but then they emailed me about nine pounders and nine pounders long. Does anyone what the difference is? I also ordered some rope and blocks from Syren. Well time to get back to building, till later Mihael.
