Speaking of "salt time" did I mention I lived 28 years on the beach in Sitka AK? Plenty of salt water boating and fishing,I was also harbormaster for about a year. Not one of my best gigs. Big fishing community there and tons of wooden boats.
No offense was taken , now lets see some more progress on that destroyer please.

Dear Mr.GnS, I spent 4 yrs in uncle Sams Navy. Yeah sure I was a Dental tech but was still on the Intrepid and later on a destroyer tender the Yosemite. I spent a lot of time up on vultures row was flight ops, And with the AD I saw a lot of different types, although we didn't go anywhere on it except for Boston and a weekend in Halifax. Also anyone worth his Salt should know that Lewiston ID is an actual seaport despite the fact we are 400 miles inland.
Also you SAID the photos were mocked up.

P.S. looks like you have a lot more salt time than me,, naval air , took one cruise to the Med my last year, thought it would be embarrassing to admit to 4 years in the navy and not having set a foot on a ship

    Good Morning Everyone,

My Name is Hal, and I am looking forward to retirement in the next year or two.  In the meantime I am to have surgery to replace my right knee.  The recovery time is expected to be approx 6 to 8 weeks before I can return to work.  It's my hope to take on modeling in my retirement.  So now that I am anticipating 6 to 8 weeks of "Confinement" I think I would like to start my new hobby.  I have decided that I would like to do a "Beginner" level model and have chosen the Pauline, from Blue Jacket Models.  It's listed as a beginning level ship, so that's why I'm going there.  Any comments???

    Warm Regards to all

    Hal

Next I started to think about all the different lists outside the hull. Old iron ships had many different profiled lists on the hull, and so did this too. There are round, half round and more complex grooved lists to be installed. The first two are easy, just go to the nearest hobbyshop and buy styrene strips with right dimensions. The grooved ones were a bit more difficult. After having thought hard, how I could make them, I finally made a forming tool of an old window scraper, and used 3x4 mm abachi strips for material.

Form tool and strips made with it.

    Form list glued at stern.

Those lists under the waterline were difficult to keep on place during glue curing. For this work I made some long nose clamps according to old shipwright manner.

But the first clamps were a bit shaky due to hinge made of leather. These improved ones work much better and are easier to use.

And finally all the lists and window frames are installed and the hull could be taken for painting.

With a big excitement I finally started the plating work. As I said earlier, this is quite new for me because I had never done this work before. First I was trying different glues into some scrap wood, and realised that contact glue is not suitable for this work, because if you apply glue on both surfaces, then let them dry, and only then apply them into hull, it must be right at the first time. Not possible to adjust the location of the plate any more. So this is why I selected slowly (4 hours) curing epoxy to be my glue.

Tools for the work. Very useful are a flexible measuring tape and especially the toothed wheel to make the rivetings. Those two were found at admiral`s sewing box. At front is a 50 mm wide belt cut from a reel of 0,05 mm thick aluminum foil.

First plates glued. They bend very nicely at one direction, but not so good into the second. But all the hulls of old iron ships that I have seen are like a surface of a potatoe bag, so no worry. It might have been better to choose 0,1 mm foil instead of this thinner one, but here we go.

Lowest belts done on both sides.

When I studied the old photographs I noticed that the second belt from above was under the neighboring ones, so this is why I made that as next.

And after a few day`s work the whole hull was plated. Not so good as the old masters did 100 years ago, but enough for me. In the mean time I made the rudder and checked that there was enough room for the propeller which is 60 mm diameter and bought from Cornwall Model Boats.

The openings for cabin windows were also done after the glue had cured.

I'm really enjoying your collection of paintings. Your style reminds me a lot of Mark Meyers whod id some pictures of early Russian and English explorers in Alaska, where I used to live. Great stuff, and so much of it too.

The assembly of keel, stem and stern can now be placed on the 'slipway'. A shrimper was down at the stern, therefore the slipway has a downward slope towards the after end. On the second picture the stem is not yet completely assembled and the irons are not yet in place.

As I recall with my Wasa from Billings, it was cut outside the line and then finesse them into position.  Time consuming but it made for perfect fits.

Always cut outside the line, you can then sand/file the parts to obtain a good fit.

Another Card build to follow, Hi Jan . A few lessons learned already, lots more to come .

A couple of suggestions, just from looking at the tools you are using :

Buy a Swann-Morton Scalpel before you get into any tricky cutting. The blades are a lot sharper than Xacto, and a better shape as well. The tips of the Xacto blades are too pointed and snap off easily, whereas the scalpel blades have a rounded (top) end that is hard to break. You can buy them on-line from many sources such as Ebay.

Diamond coated Needle Files work great on paper, much better than straight-cut files. They also work in any direction . Also available on Ebay.

UPDATE: Was informed that the radar tower behind the island is in the wrong position. After some quick research, I have confirmed that Trumpeter has the radar tower in the wrong spot. The tower should be located at the very edge of the flight deck. This is for all Nimitz class carriers. The Nimitz 1975 cruise book clearly shows the tower at the edge.
    I have relocated the tower.
