  1. John, I do have to agree. The creativity / engineerity and the way how to resolve a problem is not so much there anymore. However you still have to design the part in CAD. Hermann
  2. Yes, he built also some other awesome ships, like the whale bark CHARLES MORGAN , the schooner BENJAMIN LATHAM , or the tug LACKAWANNA. Unfortunately he got very thick. I am hoping to honor him with finishing the USS Constitution. Hermann
  3. Jon, I admire your build. It happened to be that I am now also an owner of the USS Constitution. I inherited the ship from a gentlemen with the obligation to finish it. Since I do not want to dishonor the builder, I was thinking to start with a cross section. To get the hang of it, so to speak. Do you have by any chances a drawing from a cross section? Hermann
  4. Here you can see the railing …. Although it is not a S-100 but I believe they didn’t change the railings.
  5. Great idea. How did you deal with the lower part? Drill a hole in the stanchion?
  6. I found a some nice pictures where they load mines … Just for your information, they could carry up to 6 EMC mines.
  7. Yep, many people don’t even think about it how much work is going into a model kit, including me. 😉 Very nice work Chuck! Hermann
  8. Hi Javlin, I just found your log. You built a nice model. But, if I may, it is historical not correct. The S-100 never had a 2cm Vierling and a 3.7 cm cannon on board, plus 6 mines. That would have been too heavy for the boat that size. They even wouldn’t have enough room for the service staff to accommodate them. A 2 cm Vierling needed 10 men, a 3,7 cm 3 men. I agree it is tempting to build it with all the weapons. Heck I even built one with a 2 cm Vierling, although I left the twin 2cm cannon in the waist location. The layouts below are out of “Die Deutschen Schnellboote 1914-1945” by Harald Fock. The layout with the Vierling has a 30 mm cannon in the bow. But that cannon didn’t see service, as far as I know. You might have this book already: S-Boote, German E-boats in action 1939-1945, by Jean-Philippe Dallies-Labourdette. With many good photos and in English. 😁
  9. Maybe the grate is on three sides of the wheel box? Just my two cents … Hermann
  10. Thanks for the encouragement! BTW, I did iron the drawings. It got much better. Today I got something which was for a long time on my wishlist. A steam generator. So far I did wood bending with hot water or with an iron, now I am looking forward to seeing this in action.
  11. Back to the model. I did my first big mistake. I already noticed that the dimensions are kind off (post #13), but I didn’t double check because I read that you have to take the measurement from the planking. Stupid me! I made the lower keel too thin. 1/16” instead of 5/64” like stated in the parts list and elsewhere. So I have to redo the whole procedure. 😒 Well live and learn!
  12. Btw, I found some nice photos from a 28ft. Bettle Whaleboat. https://beetlecat.com/28-beetle-whaleboat/ Some impressions:
  13. So, I am done with the oars & paddles, except painting and weathering. According to the book from Willtis D. Amsel Paddels were reinforced with 2 pins with the handle. I used 1 mm diameter plastic rods.
  14. Thank you for all the comments. To me it looks like it is more personal preference what brand you are using, as long as the pigment / grain size is small enough. There are many paint brands out there. For instance, I never heard about Delta Ceramcoat acrylics. But having said that, I had at one time some paint mixed at Sherwin-Williams to match my Land-Rover’s (1/10) color and it sprayed very well. Disadvantage is, now I have 1/2 gal left overs. 😆 Hermann
  15. What brand do you use as wood sealer?
  16. Thanks for all your input! Hermann
  17. Thank you Roger for the detailed explanation.
  18. That’s why I ask here at the forum. 🙃 Here is a ton of knowledge and the best thing is, they are willing to share! I really appreciate that.
  19. Bob thank you for your response. I do have shellac, there is no problem with that. But can I spray enamel over it? I guess I can use Acrylic, or? I better test it, before I screw up my model. Thanks, Hermann
