RGL got a reaction from docidle in HMS Dreadnought 1907 by RGL - FINISHED - Zvezda - 1/350- PLASTIC
Moving right along, now the boat deck. I attached and rigged the funnels. Some of the lines belay to the towers so will have to come after.

Gunther, I can only assume it is to diffuse the heat plume from the stacks. A bit of research on Dr Goigle seems to indicate this but I'm sure there are a few engineers here that could elaborate on this.

It certainly is David, I think all of us are OCD to a point, why would we bother otherwise with this hobby?

Now the funnels which will go on the boat deck. The funnels grill is very intricate and in many pieces which I had to make up a little jig and cut off and replace all the vent pipes and fabricate the pipes for and the horns. Also making up a funnel band and eyelets for rigging later. Came up nicely.

There are a myriad of deck hatches, and Pontos and Flyhawk both have some gaps in their plans. In particular the engine vents that Pontos just chose to ignore. There is a LOT more detail to go on top the decks but this will do for now to save snags.

No, didn't need to, it sits perfectly flush.

The deck has an adhesive backing, so it "should" just stick on. When I placed it on it stuck, then a couple of hours later it popped up in places, which I rubbed down thinking it needed heat, and a few hours after it kept popping up, thus the thin CA as anything else would leave bulges

The wood deck comes with the pontos upgrade kit, and it is just lovely, just not very adhesive.

A bit of a re think and the deck has to go down so as not to catch on stuff. A simple exercise? No, after laying the thing down painstakingly, after a few hours the thing keeps popping up in sections. Using a sliver of PE and thin CA over the last few days I have been making running repairs to get the thing to sit properly. Still looks good and makes me happy with the guesstimate of the paint colour.
I have now down up all the boat deck and funnels but will now not paint or attach anything until I have done up the deck hatches.

Yes mate, I will be, but it will be a while off yet, I want to work from the centreline outwards. There is a heap of work to go yet. I'm looking forward to the contrast.

As this part of the kit is fairly well covered up by the boat deck, not a great deal of detail was included. I replaced the search lights, added a front grill, cut off and replaced the winches, added fairleads and ladders.
Grey is such a boring colour after the other kits.

Next is off to the flying bridge . The first of the guns have to be added, namely 10 12 pounders. The unpainted bits are, from left to right, North Star with the Pontos barrels, then the kit supplied with the Flyhawk barrels (which are 3mm longer, then just the kit one. The kit one is not bad, but just not detailed. The photo shows the real thing and the upper area of the barrel is almost silver, I tried gunmetal but it was just too dark.

Ok, a heap of photo etch cut and painted off hull, .then added today. The brackets for the torpedo net booms, multiple side hatches (which for some reason Pontos chose to ignore) and a bit of dry brushing

I think your definition of large and mine are not the same .
Looking really good.
I still have trouble working out how you manage to work at this scale. I'll keep watching though.
All the best,
Richard.

Thanks, small boats finished, just have to finish the Davits besides the bridge, half of them will be slung outboard on removable Davits as that's where they sit 'in harbour' not against the superstructure, and as I'm doing the torpedo nets they'll have to be done that way. Next will be making up chain for the anchors.

The finalization of the fore mast. Went togeather with great fanfare until some idiot put the mast on backwards, the had to pull it apart and start again. Then the standing rigging.
The i added all the back stays, 2 days work as the lines are sooo fine.
The of course, that bloke Murphy caught up. The glue on the crows nest gave way. So, as the thing is fully rigged with elastic under tension, I had to hold it in the correct plane and then make sure the yards are parallel to the deck both laterally and horizontally with one hand and glue with the other. Pain in the backside.
Then I thought i'd got away with it and the middle yard snapped it's brace to the mast. As above a pain in the butt but using a set of helping hands it was remedied.
Finally, the rigging of the mast is complete. It is not as strait as I'd like but I will add stays later.

Now, there are a LOT of ships boats. The kit provides some aftermarket and I've added a bit more just to be silly.
The row boats need to be hollowed out and some grates and planks added,
And finally the davits. The loop shown is supposed to be canvas strap which I'll remove and rig properly (to a point).
I am in the process of painting these now.

I tried, it looked horrible. It wasn't hard just 2 days work, I always do extras just in case of the carpet monster or random acts of my stupidity. Plonk them on masking tape, glue down one end, then start wrapping.
