Too much? My wife bought this last night on an online auction for $130. I've been in a quandry for ages about building a glass cabinet, but this kind of solved it!

RGL reacted to freewheelinguy in HMS Bellerophon by freewheelinguy - FINISHED - Victory Models - Semi-scratchbuilt
I AM REPOSTING MY LOG FROM MSW 1.0.  I HAD SAVED THIS LOG IN PDF AND WILL TRY TO SUPPLY ALL THE UPDATES AND PICS I HAVE EXTRACTED FROM THIS FILE. THE LAST COUPLE UPDATES FROM THE LOG WENT DOWN WITH THE SHIP, BUT I WILL TRY TO RECONSTRUCT THEM ALONG WITH THE LATEST UPDATES AND BUILD’S CURRENT STATUS.

This is the start of my build log for the partial scratch build of the Bellerophon option of the Amati Victory Models Vanguard kit scale 1:72.
I wanted to see, if it was cost effective to build this kit by first ordering the plans from Online Hobbies. After reviewing the plans and going through the parts list, I found it to be cost effective. My estimate is between 50-60% savings. Doing this way will mean much more labor though. I used an evaluation copy on Corel Draw’s site to see if I could use it for my needs of importing and making drawings acceptable for making laser cut sheets. The program could do everything I required, so I purchased it on Ebay for a very reasonable price (<$70).
Below is a list of suppliers for this build so far.
Online Hobbies – cast and etched parts sets plus additional material. They are presently working on filling that order.
National Balsa – Basswood sheets for bulkheads and other cutouts. Purchased two laser cut sheets of walnut for gun carriages plus other items that I thought wouldbe difficult to scratch build. Working with Eric at National Balsa was very easy. After a couple of emails, sending my two drawings, I received material in about five days. The laser charge was about $40 that included the price of the walnut material ($12-15 per sheet for cutting). Thanks to Chuck for giving the idea for this.
JBModel - for 18 9lb barrels. These are the best I have seen. Very representative for ships of this time period. I looked in the book Arming and Fitting Of English Ships of War and these are exactly what is shown there. From order to receiving was a week. Very satisfied and highly recommend.
Cornwall Models - ordered 2mm sheets plus a couple of other things. The ship boats are made from this size and didn’t want to mess with using 3/32” (2.4mm) instead. I will say, if living in the US, my order took just about a month to receive. They do specify this on their site just beware that it could take this long when ordering. No problem here, but you do wonder if something happened to your order.
Hobby Mill - ordered maple strips for the decking plus a couple of other items. What can be said, but his product is the best and what a gentleman. He is super to work with.
Now for the build. I'm not building this one in the normal order. I have started with the 9 and 18 lb gun carriages. Size dimensions were taken from Ship Modeler's Shop Notes book. Attached is a pic of the partially built carriages. I'm presently making the eyelets and rings for these using #32 and #28 gauge black annealed wire.
There are ten eyelets and five rings per carriage and deck mounting, so there's several hundred needed. I've almost completed all.
Next I will be building the five ships boats before I start the ships hull.
    That's it for now.
    Happy modeling,

RGL reacted to Timothy Wood in Atlantic 1903 by Timothy Wood - FINISHED - Scale 1/8 = 1' - Half-Hull
    Greetings,

This will be the build log of the Schooner Atlantic (Half Hull).

    Some background history:

The Atlantic was built in 1903 by Townsend and Downey shipyard, and designed by William Gardner, for Wilson Marshall. The three-masted schooner was skippered by Charlie Barr and it set the record for fastest transatlantic passage by a monohull in the 1905 Kaiser's Cup race. The record remained unbroken for nearly 100 years.

    Trans-Atlantic sailing record:

In 1905, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany proposed a race across the North Atlantic and put forward a solid gold cup to be presented to the winner. Eleven boats including the Kaiser's yacht Hamburg and the schooner Atlantic skippered by Charlie Barr took part.
The competitors encountered strong winds and gales which ensured a fast passage time and all eleven boats finished the race. Atlantic won, breaking the existing record with a time of 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. The record stood for 75 years until broken by Eric Tabarly sailing the trimaran Paul Ricard. However Atlantic's monohull record stood for nearly 100 years until was broken in 1997 by the yacht Nicorette completing the crossing in 11 days 13 hours 22 minutes.

    Passing of a legend:

Atlantic deteriorated and sank at the dock in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1982, the wreckage was removed for the installation of a floating dry dock at Metro Machine Shipyard.

Ok, back in business, I originally saved each photo since 2009 in separate files, and will upload all eventually in order. The hull and first layer of planks of course is first, and the second layer with 5000 treenails. Last photo is where i'm up to, fitting the masts. More to follow. Thanks to the adminsitrators for their persistence.

Lower shroud cleats. All 32 of them! No wonder this hobby takes so long.

I use the process as meditation as I tell myself I won't finish for years. I love the ability to buy small tools without buying big stuff so the wife doesn't notice.

Well here we are with my fourth OcCre build
This will be my biggest build yet and I expect it to take me a while
My previous ship builds have been the Sergal Racehorse and Thermopylae
The Racehorse being a quite small ship at 1:48 scale was a nice easy starter whereas the Thermopylae, a much bigger ship at 1:124 scale really tested me
You can see the site I built for the Thermopylae here   http://micklen.50megs.com/
My most recent ship has been the OcCre Spirit of Mississippi the log of which can be found in my signature

This build however will be my most advanced as it includes full sails
Here are the bits out of the box.  Please click on the thumbnails to open the photos in Photobucket

Here are the two parts boxes containing all the small parts.  It doesn't look too much until you start counting things

Next are the miles of cordage and the small sheet of pressed brass

These are the thinner, simpler laser cut sheets such as decks

These the more complicated pieces and coloured parts

And the thicker, heavier cuts that are the bulkheads and the like

           Here are the sails

The planking, other wood strips and rods

The stand, an extra I purchased

           And finally the various instructions

I was really happy to see the main instructions to be in Spanish AND English
The diagrams are in Spanish only but there are only lists of what parts are on the page and that should be easy to translate
The instructions are a surprisingly small set of five pages but the photograph book and the diagrams are very comprehensive
I shall probably start work on the false keel and the frames tomorrow
Let me know if the Photobucket photos work well and if not I will try to use the system on the site but I did have problems with that
    Here's to the start

OK, foremast stays complete. I have to re rig the first shroud as it lost tension with the stays. I think by the time i put the 3 masts in, do their shrouds, stays, Catharpins, shroud cleats, tackle, tops, I'll be ready for Santa before i have to do the ratlines.

Stays and Mouses (or mice i suppose). I made the stays and wormed them to give them a better thickness. I then got an old wooden spindle and drilled holes in the end to  run lines through (al la frolich). I made a small wooden mouse from stock and then attempted to  cross stitch to produce the mouse. Seriously, black thread is too hard as you just get lost, thus the tan line used for the second one. A LOT of buggering around but the result came out OK.

I've been procrastinating with this next bit, with shift work and kids, I finally disciplined myself and put off doing the ironing to work on the bowsprit collars and stepping the bowsprit.

Each of the collars had to be stropped first which is remarkably easy, as was the lashing eventually. Once I finish off a few more stays I shall try my hand at a ropewalk for the preventers.

    Wow.
Awesome work! looks like you are building most things from scratch. really nice!

Just a note, the spreaders on the trees are supposed to move the stays out and it does angle them.  Just like you have it and it's the same on the real ship.  modern small sail boats use the same principle.
