Thanks Al and Christos and also thanks for the likes.
A few more photos with some progress.
The first photo's are a mix with the kit supplied 1.2mm cannon balls and the 2mm balls I purchased. Surprisingly the smaller ones have won out (so far). The larger balls just look way too big compared to the carronades. They are not glued in yet so I can still change my mind.
To say that the top fife rails are fragile is giving them too much credit. I broke both the top and bottom by gently trying to take the char off. I salvaged them because they broke at different places so I could still glue them together. The pump is also in progress.
I had a bugger of a time deciding on the paint for the ships wheel. I just couldn't find the right wood colour. In the end I listened to the Admiral (again....sigh) and painted it with a metallic gold enamel paint, black acrylic to paint the iron rings and matt oil based varnish over the lot.  I can already see some paint experts shaking their heads in disbelief but hey, I think it did the trick...lol
    Here are the photo's

Today I worked on the Stern Assembly and the counter. Again all the parts fit nice and snug.

The last thing I did today Lou was add the Bow and stern fillers and get a rough fairing sand done.

No need to carve a bearding line as it is formed by adding pieces D-1 through D-3 into slots left  between the lower bulkheads and the bulkhead former.

Started build by assembling the lower bulkheads to the bulkhead former and baseplate. Everything fit nice and tight and square.

I'm starting to build the fwd and main lower masts. I had months ago prepared the deck to take each mast. Instead of carving the mounting peg that goes into the deck, I drilled and inserted a dowel at the base of each mast. The main mast on the Argus has a large aft rake. The forward is almost vertical.

Kit has arrived in perfect condition. No import taxes (lucky me). There is sailcloth included, unfortunately not precut. Oh, well...

The starboard side lids installed five times faster than the port side. I guess practice makes perfect, I'll clean them up and varnish them tomorrow.

I fabricated the channels by adding two extra pieces on the under side of each to give me more gluing surface and more holding power for the pins. 1/16 in is too skinny for me to drill and insert a pin.

I taped on some protective foam sheets so I can lay her on her side when I install the other sides gun port lids. These lids are very strong but why take chances.

Glued all the port side lids on. When the glue dries I'll varnish them. BTW they are all pinned for strength.

Well....since it's 118 degrees outside....and I've been fight the big "C" for six months and didn't so much as glue a splinter on the ship...I'm making up for it. Thanks for the nice comment. BTW it feels real good to make progress.

I lined the inside of the lids with wood matching the inside bulkheads. If the lids were closed the inside gunwale walls would all match. It also serves to reinforce the four glued plank pieces that make up the lid.

Created a building board to keep the keel straight and glued in the rest of the bulkheads.
Filler blocks have been cut but not glued yet.

    Preformed the rabbet strip.
Dry fit the bulk heads, the stern looks to line up nice.

The bow not so much, The second bulk head bevel line falls short of the bearding line. I guess I'll remark to the bearding line and bevel from there, worst case I guess I'll have to do more sanding when fairing the hull.

    Hey all,

Here is an update.  I am just continuing to plank the hull and I am on a good pace.  I am glad that I will be using wood filler and painting it because it sure will need the. Filler after I'm done planking!!

I have started to plank from the keel up and Its going pretty well.  Im just a little worried about if the curves are correct when the last set of planks are laid. So after this section, I will remeasure the plank widths.

Thanks for reading and the likes and comments!!

    Dilbert,

Yes. I have decided to paint the hull and the model like the kit says to for a few reasons:

1 ) The quality of the basswood provided isnt high enough to display.   A.L did not provide a second hull planking and assumes the builder will paint it.  I think thats why they didnt include a nice hull finishing planking. (Plus lower cost for them)

    2) Since this is my first forray into trying to plank the right way with no planks ending in a point, etc, I know I will have mistakes and will learn from it. So being able to fill with filler and paint will go a long way in hiding those mistakes.

    3) I like the paint scheme and I want to try my hand at painting anyway.

Reasons 1 and 2 are the main ones of why I will paint it.  If I wasn't going to paint, I would HIGHLY recommend either replacing the supplied basswod strips with higher quality wood (the type would be up to you) or buy a thin second planking wood strips  and make sure to sand the frames/keel appropriately so to make room for the second planks.

On that note, they want you to paint the inside hull planking where the guns will be.  I have quite a bit of glue on the inside of the planks and its not even:

So, I am going to cover both inside planks with a thin,  0.5mm planks, then sand and paint it to make it more even.
