FriedClams reacted to Jim Lad in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
A difficult decision indeed on whether or not to replace the thwarts in the boats, Michael. As this is a restoration, I think I might be inclined to replace them - especially as you'll be using the same material. Of course, to be truly authentic, you'll have to find some of the same vintage packaging that the original model makers used!

Thanks for all the positive comments.
I am beginning to sort out the lifeboats now that a few distractions are completed and mailed. I decided to set them up in some small rectangles of homasote so that each will be able to be handled as an independent model so that I can fix the davits and lines while off the ship model.
The small bits of card are some test pieces of card painted for replacing the missing seats in some of the lifeboats. I had thought of using some strips of Evergreen initially but they would not be as the original which are card. The interesting thing is some of the loose pieces when flipped over one can see that the model makers back in the day that this model was made must have simply cut up some packaging.
Quite a few of the lifeboat seats have sagged into a curve some quite a lot, the painted card in also quite brittle, when i attempted to flatten one of the loose seats the paint fractured. Hmmm now the dilemma is do I replace all the curved seats.
some of the davits are seriously bent, and will need some delicate straightening.
Something I noticed while writing this post was a pleasant surprise, Judy had called me from the library and asked me about the weather it is snowing so I clicked on the weather tab without changing tabs and lost the post which was almost ready to submit. I was annoyed at myself and used the back button to see if it was still there and it appeared to be gone, I told myself off.
I went to rewrite the post and it all came back with a comment that it was restored!
So thank you for that Admin, I have lost a few in the past, this is a nice feature.

Rob I have the original portholes they pulled out nicely with the flush cut pliers before I started to fill the divets, they will push back in when the painting is done.
I had to pop the railing on loosely to see how colour matched and I am very happy with the match. In the pictures you can see the middle lower stanchions that are painted silver and the top rail and the two outside lower sets of stanchions look close enough to pass me-thinks
That's it for today A very satisfying bit of work.

Thanks for all the visits and Likes.
This whole process is a huge learning curve for me as well no matter how much I have learned in the past it seems that each step presents new challenges. The simple act of matching a colour can be quite frustrating.
I have been working on filling the lower divets in the hull and working at getting the colour matched at the same time, there is more orange in the hull read than I had thought.
The lighting selection in the camera gives me different things to look for and in daylight it is different again. The model will eventually be displayed again in a public space with modern lighting.
The stanchions are getting close to looking like all the rest.

Mark, thanks I checked out Michael's already with no luck. I may try a grocery store for small netting per Brian's suggestion.
Bob, just back from my morning walk and all boats are still floating, WindWalker is all buttoned up. The tide was out and only a couple of tourists walking that were speaking French. Once the big rain drops started I did an about face and headed for the car as fast as I could hobble. So far the weather is holding but that can change rather quickly around here with the Pineapple Express hitting us.
Thanks for all your comments!

Glad you have power back on. Hope you can stay home through this next round of storms.
I'm curious to know how all the boats in the bay made it through the storm. Hope not too many were lost.

Yeeooochh... more storm. Looks like here it's tonight through Thursday. Same for you. Hopefully, you'll just get some rain and not the winds.
Netted basket.. How about a lantern mantle painted the proper color? The other alternative is to hit Micheal's or Hobby Lobby and nose about the doll house, jewelry, and maybe the small decorative items areas.

Would the netting from sacks of fruit suffice? For example either those bags of tangerines or garlic sacks? Then just wrap with string around a metal ring. The part I am not sure about would be how long the bag is? Guessing 18-24 inches in length? And at least a foot in diameter.

Mark and All, the power is back on at 8 pm Sunday life is good again. Roger here are a couple of images of abalone divers. Note the one gathering and putting them in his basket. That is the one item I need to figure out how to weave or make.
Second wave of storm to come through late tonight and early tomorrow; here we go again. My daughter saved our bacon, literally she has two refrigerators with freezers and we managed to save everything. Still need to transfer the frozen stuff tomorrow after the second wave goes through.

Ken,
I do hope the power guy shows up. I imagine they're pretty stretched to the max with this storm.

Mark, thanks! Yes it looks like in pictures I have seen some have knives and some do not. Still without power for another day and not looking good for another few days. Thank goodness we have our daughter living close and she has power. Still sleeping at the house just like camping with 58 degrees. The pole is down at the bottom of the hill and roped off but not a PG&E guy in sight.

You're taking the brunt of this storm, Ken. We'll see the outskirts of it up here. Stay safe.
Dirty Dozen looks great and those two figures just bring her to life. The diver might have had a knife just "because", but for abalone, they pop off the rocks, etc. pretty easily. We used to snorkel off the coast in 20-30 foot deep water when I was stationed at Santa Ana and find abalone on the rocks on the bottom.

Still no power, projected restoration tonight at midnight. Just having fun with the granddaughters now. We are in one of the pockets in Morro Bay with no power. So far only 2.3 inches of rain but record winds, we may have to replace our roof about two dozen shingles scattered around the house. Our neighbor has a tile roof and lost several tiles as well. House across the street was a total mess with 25% of the roof gone. Locals are telling us this is the worst storm in decades and more to come. The ocean waves are 16 to 18 feet and real impressive; watched them while having breakfast this morning at the embarcadero.

Roger, no commercial fishing on the central coast, but there is an abalone farm north of us. What i can tell from pictures they were just pulled off and put into a gathering basket. Some divers carried a sheathed knife; but in pictures I have seen the divers did not have them. At our daughter`s house since our power has been off 5 hours now, big storm coming through with strong winds and trees down everywhere; roads closed all around us. I will post a picture when I can.
Steve, just a game change, diver might be more interesting to look at than an engine.

Nice Work! I'm curious though. Do they still "fish" for abalone? If so, how does it differ from the scene that you portray? Doesn't the diver need some sort of tool to pry the abalone from a rock or does he just pick them up?
Again, a beautiful job.

Congratulations on the completion of a simple looking but actually quite complex model and presentation, Ken. Look forward to your future builds here on MSW!
