Robin Lous reacted to madtatt in Bismarck by madtatt - FINISHED – Trumpeter with Pontos set – 1:200 - PLASTIC
Thank you for the praise.
When I tackle the Yamato there will of course be a construction report, Yves. But I fear that it will take a while before that happens.
I'm currently pursuing a slightly different model building project that involves a completely different type of ship.
I will then show it in the Non-ship/categorised builds section.
So all that's left for me to do now is to present you the pictures of the finished model and wish you a lot of fun looking at them.
I would like to thank you again for all the nice comments and I am happy that you have accompanied me.
So raise the curtain...

Ok, the model itself is finished, and now I've done the stand. The wooden part, painted gold, was done ages ago. The base is made of a piece from a broken slab of marble that was in the garden when we bought the house. Marble - Byzantium; of course they belong together!
I was going to paint a fairly elaborate decorative border - vines curling around and all that. Then I decided the focus should be on the ship, not the stand, so I've kept it simple. Just the description and date in a readable font.
Unfortunately after all the work I did on carving that beautiful golden stand, it's almost invisible behind the oars.

Ah...the joys of thole pins.
A very minor setback on your glorious journey.🙂

Thanks gentlemen!
Finished the oar ropes and tension cable on the other side and the top row seats.
Back to the pin rail I mentioned before. When I done that I can do the rear deck railing.
More soon,

This is what I do with it....
I made the leather sleeves (Greek: Askomata) to prevent water from coming in through the lower oar-ports.
Note: the ports need to be fairly large, because the oar blades must fit through them to be able to pull them in...and to replace broken oars from the inside.
First I glue the oar to the copper sliding plate and tholepin on the inside. Then I slide the sleeve inside the hole and fix it with a tiny drop of CA glue on the inside.
Then I close the sleeve with tweezers and a piece of string.
And finally I paint the sleeve leather brown.
And that was my first oar!

Congrats! Nice and stylish.
I don't think adding weight to the rear is the solution. The bigger prop wil probably do the trick already.

Of course it looks better to the naked eye....close up and blown up photo's are depressing.
