Pete, Please give it a try! The build goes pretty fast which is rewarding in itself, no long drawn out days if building several frames. (If you know what I mean?) I would highly reccoment BlueJackets Endeavour kit. It's a easy build and the instructions are very good and easy to follow, also the Basswood and Mahagony are of high quality, which means you don't have to paint the hull if you choose! PS: Please click in the link for the Endeavour, under my completed kits. You will be able to follow my build log. Cheers, Tim

Bob, I use a variety of tools, the most common are: 7/16" Chisel Assorted Mascot Chisels Small Block Plane Wood Rasp Draw Plane Dremel Sander (The Dremel sander is no longer available and the sanding pads are increasingly hard to find, I found my last set on eBay). Tim

Using template "D" to check progress on the shape of the hull. Once again it's very important to take your time at this point. "You can always take more wood off but you can't put it back on" Cheers, Tim

As you can see, I have completed working the shear into the hull, now I'm ready to start shaping the sides of the hull. I will continually check the shape of the hull to insure it conforms to the pattern at each station. Cheers, Tim

My next was to make the templates for the station lines. I did this by making several copies of the forward and aft hull drawing, then I used rubber cement to glue them to a piece of card stock. After the glue dried I cut out each template at its station point. Cheers, Tim

The Phantom is a good looking kit, there have been several time's I've come close to ordering it. As you can see I have enough on my plate! Tim

After much work this afternoon, the shear is almost completed. (photos to come later). The next set is to cut pattern for the station lines fore and aft, they will then be glued to a piece of card stock, this will keep them rigid and help stand up to frequent use. Tim

Im back home from vacation and finally had the chance to make some wood chips in the shop tonight! YEA!!! I have started working the basic hull shape and the shear into the blocks of wood, as you can see from a couple views she is starting to look like a Schooner. (Boy that had me worried!) Cheers, Tim

The Admiral also states she likes the idea of a seporate rudder, she didn't like the looks of the rudder on the Endeavour that I finished last month. Have to keep the Admiral happy!

The Wilton Power Arms are very nice, I ended up purchasing a new one because I was never able to win a bid on ebay... They are pricy but well worth the money if you do this type of modeling!. Cheers, Tim

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
