Johnny, I’ve had two strokes, one in the right cerebellum and the second in my left cerebellum. Also Multiple Myloma, cancer of the blood, (in remission after a bone marrow transplant), suspected cause of that was exposure to jet fuel.
The second stroke was worse than the first. Cause was atrial fibrillation.  I suffered balance issues, depression and issues with handwriting . Long story short, physical therapy helped the second stroke. And two other things have helped.
I have recently taken up learning the piano. Learning to read  music,  and using my left and right hand to play at the same time. I believe this has helped me “re-wire” my brain. And then there is model ship building.
I’ve had trouble building Smuggler for the last year but have resumed. My hands are now much steadier, and was even  to even carve out the Bulwarks, although it took me two weeks! .
Music has helped me, maybe it could help you too. The power of music and model ship building,

All the best during your recovery.

Thanks, Keith! I'll definitely do a test to see how it handles sanding--the interior bottom isn't faired yet and some frames need a good bit of sanding, so I'd hate to add the wire pin and find that it impedes fairing.

I know I must sound like a broken record at this point, but the cant frames continue to give me a lot of trouble. As mentioned above, the D frames stuck out way too much, forming a bulge that would be impossible to fair without sanding nearly through the frames. In fact, trying to bend my thinnest batten around this point cracked the wood! I was going to shift the frames a little higher on the deadwood, but before doing so, I checked the height if the top frame end above the bottom of the keel against the plans, and found that the frames were already a good bit higher than they should have been. After some consideration, I ended up trimming material off the bottom, which lowers them slightly and brings the frames in a bit, getting rid of the problematic bulge in the hull. The issue now is that the frames are technically cut shorter at the bottom end than they are shown on the plans, even considering the width of the deadwood. That said, I then realized that the width of the deadwood on the cant frames would have to measured not across the beam, but at the same diagonal as the cant frames. Considering this, they're closer to what's given in the plans. In any case, they seem to be a lot fairer now based on running battens around them, although it's all a little hard to tell given how much fairing is needed. I guess I'll have to see how it goes when I get to fairing, and at worst will have to just cut them out again and make new ones.

I've also started on cant frame C at the bow--just the port frame so far--and similarly am having a lot of trouble with it. I'm constantly shaping it slightly, offering it up to the hull and checking with battens inside and out, and trimming it again, while keeping an eye on the height of its tip. I'm not quite their yet, but, while I've trimmed a surprising amount off the bottom, it seems from the battens like it will fair up well?

Anyway, I'm still enjoying the build, but as I've already mentioned quite a few times, I really wish the plan set had more accurately depicted how the cant frames intersect the keel/deadwood/stem, as this is really causing a lot of stressful confusion that could have been avoided.

From my research for the Tennessee sail/ steam vessels built in the early 1860's were more dependent on sails than steam due to lack of coal carrying capacity and steam engine design infancy. In the beginning steam engines were used more for docking than actual sea travel. It was not uncommon for those ships built in the early 1860's to have been refitted with newly designed engines as steam engine development was in a constant state of flux till the perfecting of the triple expansion engine.

The model is a bit naive, maybe not quite to scale, and perhaps the details should not be taken too seriously. However, the double white bands on red funnels are distinctive and might give a clue. Unfortunately, the only line I can find that used that pattern was the Nelson Steam Navigation Co., which ran a service to Buenos Aires and maybe other South American ports. The only fleet list I can find for them shows the earliest ship as 1903, whereas the model is clearly of something much earlier.

Peruvian is a much closer match. Her mainmast looks to have been proportioned and rigged for square yards (as in the model), though none were crossed when the photo was taken.

The visually closest one I could find is the SS Peruvian of the Allan Line.

Could very well be some other migrant ship of that era.

Nice model, although my huess is that there was the usual artistic license by the builder.
It reminds me of the steam barques around 1900.
any provenance that could guide us in the search for the original?

(actually: I doubt what the function of the original was: not navy (no guns). No  hatches, so not bulk transport. Passenger transport?
Also: the pucs I can find show one-funneled ships. This one has two, but also a complete barque (?) rigging.

Artistic license, or a clue towards the original ship?

does it have a name on the transom?

Welcome to Model Ship World.  The book "Ship Modeling Simplified" got me started in this wonderful hobby.  About two years later, I joined the Hampton Roads Ship Model Society and unbeknownst to me, Frank Mastini was a member.  He became a mentor to me as I would drive from Richmond to his home in Virginia Beach for tips and techniques on building wooden ship models.  Unfortunately, he became sick about a year later, but I will always cherish the time I spent with him.

    Hello,

Very excited to get started on this journey! I made plastic ships when I was in high school but now that I'm in my 40s I wanted to sink my teeth into something more involved.

For my first ship I'm working the Pirate Ship "Adventure" by Amati. I'm using Ship Modeling Simplified by Frank Mastini as my primary reference guide and a series of YouTube videos by Davaoshipmodeller working on that exact model.

I plan on making mistakes and using this a learning opportunity before I work on something bigger next year. I've set myself up with a small work station in my garage on a cheap little IKEA desk, nothing fancy for now but I can expand on it as I need.

Thanks again for providing this space for new modelers.

I use TurboCAD.  Concerning the table of offsets, I have never used them.  When the actual lofting is done on the floor the offsets are soon abandoned at any rate.  Perhaps my efforts will be useful to you.

Found some old pictures of my cotton wool thing. I did use larger pads of cotton wool, they were less dense. This was of course a smoke effect, I guess you will need to play a lot with the colouring to make it look like dense fire.

Love the colours you've already applied, very strong pigment, and that's what you'll need I guess.

Really fantastic work! I'm struck by the table and chairs--they may be some of the simpler constructions in this build, but they're made beautifully.
