    Hi All,

    Time for some updating.

I took a break from rigging the cannon and seeing that I’d made the bow sprite I figured I should put in place.

I made the bowsprit step from Chuck’s mini kit. It was of, course, a pleasure to build and went together like a dream.

The winch on the other hand was scratch built from the plans. There were a few do over’s and the scrap bin is a bit fuller but success was finally achieved.

And here is it all in place.

I guess it's back to stropping blocks and finishing up the cannon rigging.

The length of rope for the jibsail halyard was taken from the rigging plan and placed in a rope coil on the floorboards, aft the windlass. This coil was seized with light colored rope.

A gasket coil was created next from the remaining line on the gaff. Included is a reference photo of this type of coil.

The remaining line on the boom was placed in a coil on the aft platform. When these steps were complete, the remaining staging could take place and a final rope coil could be created for the remaining lanyard at the stern. Lashing the boat is next.

Tom, Michael and Albert, Thank you!

Work continues with the foresail halliard. There is a 24 gauge eyebolt located on the cap rail and just aft of the stem. Not that it's hard to do, but I can see where one might want to place it early on before the rigging is started. The block located behind the crosstree wasn't difficult to place, but care has to be taken not to bang into the other rigging already there. Chuck noted that it has to be placed so the rope falls behind the lower yard to a cleat on the lower mast.

Time to tighten things up and get to those rope coils I have been avoiding. . .

Today, I started the running rigging with the jib halliard and related components. The traveler ring, was made by Chuck and is available on his website. I decided that stabilizing the traveler ring was key to making it all go smoothly. The photos below show the steps taken to achieve this. Note that the jib halliard #2 is temporarily wrapped around one of the bowsprit bitts instead of being fully rigged through the block at the mast head. That will come later after the jib inhaul is completed. The jib outhaul #1 is routed correctly.

With the traveler ring stabilized I made the jib inhaul.
Lastly the inhaul was seized to the traveler ring and the jib halliard was routed correctly.

Hope this all makes sense. .

    Just a brief update.

I have, I believe, finally completed fairing. Work suddenly went crazy, and a couple of other time consuming things occurred, but I think I finally have it where I'm happy, including fairing of the transom, which was attached after the bulkhead/frames were done.

I've been reading a lot about approaches to planking, and trying to get the corsage to commence in the few bits of time I've had.

i expect life to calm down a little in a few weeks, so I'm unlikely to do anything before then, as I want to have a clear head and a few clear hours to set off in the right direction.

Well, I have finally made it past the standing rigging. I recently noticed that the cleats going around the lower mast are evenly spaced, just not in the right starting position. They all need to be shifted 5-10° in one direction to match the plans. I don't see this as anything to be concerned about, but I will leave the top mast stay tackle long, should I need to move it to another cleat later. It's impossible to take the photos the way I want to show them, that is the entire image, full size and high resolution. Can't have everything, but hopefully you will get the idea.

Significant progress on the blocks. I used the method described in the article below, but I used white glue and a simple overhand knot for the seizing. There's a bit of excess rope because I didn't want to cut too close to the knot (done this already!). A thinner line for the seizing would make the excess rope invisible. The rope coils should hide some of this.

    Phil,
I am glad to find your build log of the longboat.
Just take it easy, don't rush..... (mine took almost three years to complete)
And I see another member here as well building the longboat, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

If you can learn from my mistakes, I'm good with that! It would have worked also to remove it after the glue dried, but yes, I'm sure it was easier before it dried. Look forward to more updates and photos. It's a difficult kit. Take your time and redo what you're not happy with.

Thanks Steve, you're right of course. I did think a couple of degrees could be accommodated by making sure  everything is faired properly. But even if it could be, the only thing I'd ever see would be that one slightly wonky frame...

We don't (to the best of my knowledge) have Elmers in the UK, and I'm not sure what the equivalent is.

For other woodworking jobs, I'd normally use Titebond, which is, as the name implies, a very strong glue. For this, I went with plain old white woodworkers glue, so hopefully it will come away ok.

Test fitted, tweaked and glued the bulkheads today. Almost all of the bulkheads wanted to sit forward and high starboard, low and aft port side, so it took a little filing and repeated test fitting to get them to sit true without straining (with a tiny amount of force) against the clamps. Just two or three strokes with a file in the top right corner of the bulkhead slot was enough for most. None required this more than twice.

Bulhead two leans back by 2-3 degrees. My bad clamping. I haven't decided yet whether to try to remove and reseat it, or let it pass, I'm not used to de gluing such tiny things, and I'm concerned about breakage...I suspect it will stay as-is, and serve as a reminder to check roll, pitch and yaw several times each...

In theory I have time tomorrow to make a start on fairing... I may be slow, but I'll post photos of where I get to.

On another note, I seem to have rather unexpectedly gained approval from the Admiralty to move indoors, into a permanent installation! This would be a big step forward, as my garage "workspace" - which is still not completely cleared of obstacles - is cold, draughty and dirty. So with any luck, I'll be knocking up (or maybe just buying) a new workbench in the spare bedroom sometime soon

    Got it!

Bit of a palaver, but here's the first pics.

    first the box...

    And the contents ...

I found a new use for my iPad...as a backlight to check for tight dry-fit joints...

Todays progress amounts nuts to the rabbet, bearding and keel assembly. Just need to resize the photo...here we go:

Tomorrow I'll dry fit the bulkheads/frames and see if I can find my small engineers squares...I fear I may need to buy a couple.

Oh and small clamps. I thought I had small clamps, but they are ENORMOUS compared to this model. Anyone know a good source of genuinely teeny clamps in the UK?

    Hello!

This will be my first build log of my first wooden ship model. The box arrived today, and I've checked over the inventory list, and all is ok.

As this is my first ever wooden model build, I will be doing it out of the box, especially as there are some challenging parts for a beginner!

First thoughts? It's tiny. I knew it would be small, but it's tiny!

I've taken a load of photos of work so far (very little!), but can't for the life of me figure out how to post them (I'm on an iPad). When I work it out I'll add them...

Thanks for the kind words!  I make such a mess when I do the planking, with the glue smearing the pencil all over the place, glue finger prints, etc., that I can't tell how the joints between strakes will look until I sand all the mess off.  As I sanded, I was pleasantly surprised that the last strake turned out so well.  To get it to the right width I cut it down to get it to the basic shape, but slightly oversized, and then started at the bow with removing material and worked my way along the length of the plank.  Meaning, once I got the first 1/2" so it would fit in between the adjacent strakes, I moved onto the next short segment, carefully sanding the plank edge and test fitting until it fit correctly with a little pressure.  I erred on the side of not removing enough material as I did my sanding, before test fitting.  As we all have learned the hard way, you can't put material back!
