As a new builder I didn't realize that I was using the bending heat tool incorrectly all along. This video demonstrates a method that really works very well. I wet the plank briefly and start bending and it is amazing how easily the plank forms to whatever shape you need.

Of course i learned this when I was 3/4 done. Aghhh!

Hopefully this may help others new to building.

Hi Sailorross. Thanks for the compliments. I love retirement   Gives me the time to work on my hobbies. I started the Sirene about 5 years ago and only got half way through the hull before I put it away. Work kept getting in the way. In December I took it out and have been working on it since.

Your Unicorn is looking good. It seems that many of the Corel kits are of very similar design. Regarding the keel and staining, I used 2 products on the entire ship.

The Formby's on everything. Easy to apply with some cheese cloth hand rubbed in. A couple of coats. I did the edges of the keel I used the Watco. It's got a very slight tint, but enough to darken just a bit. Same application method.

I also used the Watco on the yardarms (you can see them in the background). The masts stay light (Formby's) and the yardarms are a shade darker. I need to give them a couple more coats.

Good luck with the Unicorn and keep in touch. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

    Running rigging is now done.
New candidate for repetitive mindless job of the month: making dozens of rope coils for the belay point (last picture).
The rest are views of the essentially complete Morgan with coils for the spider bands and mainmast pinrail yet to be placed. I was hoping to be completely done (except the 7 whaleboats) before I leave the country for a week, but the coils took longer than expected and I won't have time to do the cutting-in stage and the paint touch ups here and there that it needs.
Only a day or two work remaining.

A stressful and disappointing morning in the shipyard ....
All I had to do today was tie off two topsail clew lines and add a couple blocks and the static lift.
Unfortunately, tying off the two lines was very difficult due, again, to access to the belay points. In manipulating a 6" tweezers through a maze of obstacles, I managed to tie them off at the cost of breaking off a couple of lower main yard blocks when putting unintentional pressure on the main lower yard and "plucking" several foremast stays to the extent that they are now slack. Very unsightly.
I repaired the broken ties to the blocks and restrung things, but lost the perfect 90 degree placement of all the yards whose lines are already tensioned and tied off. I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do about the stretched and slack fore-stays, but I think I'm going to have to walk away for a few days. I was hoping to get the last top-gallant yard up before taking a break, but that's not going to happen.
Ups and Downs; lots of "next time I'll do it THAT way", etc.

I had pictures in the camera for this build as well.  I did get to dry fit the winch assembly.......and then it was assembled.  I put 'er up next to a penny to show just how big it is.

the idea I had carried over to the skylight roof parts.   I have one of 'em done here.

they are both done now.  as I figured would happen,  there is some minor scratches.   I think a coat of lacquer will hide them though.  we'll see what happens....the boxes are next,  right along with the three holds.  I know........I wasn't very kind in my description of the bilge pump.   I'll let the diagram speak for itself.....

these are the parts that will make up the pump.   the first thing will be to drill out the cylinders.....they need a bit more depth and for the mouth to be a bit larger.  then,  I'll see what I can do about that straight line they call a shaft.   ......and they rolled the brass up.......hate it when they do that.

I assembled it while I was visiting here today.......fair bit of multi-tasking.  I'll show you what I came up with when I get back..........now that I'm back on my feet,  I'm not immune to errands anymore.

What an amazing job you did on this build. I am building a Corel model as well, the Sirene 1775 French frigate. It is my first build so I know I will not come anywhere close to your workmanship but following your build log is a great help. Congrats on a great accomplishment.

Cannons are not glued down yet. I just put them in place to see how they look. I may put on the block & tackle (not sure if that's what it's called) on the cannons that will show. Next step is to put on the upper deck, which will pretty much cover most of the lower deck shown here. I also tried to "weather" the lower decking because it looked too clean, like brand new wood, and not very authentic in my opinion. I put it on the stand that came with the kit. The flay stand plate was badly warped. I thought I had it fixed but over time it warped again. I'll figure out later what to do about it but in the meantime I can use it to work on the model. The instructions kept referring to "Table 2" but there was no table 2 in the kit, so I sent a note to Corel. They answered the same day and said they were mailing it to me. Great service! I was very impressed. Not sure how long it take to get here (USA) from Italy but I'm hoping that when I receive it I "guessed" correctly when I got to those points.  As always, if anyone has a suggestion for improvement or constructive criticism it is always appreciated. My first build and still learning.

Starting second deck. The kit was short some material so I had to improvise on the handrail supports. I actually think they look better than what was supposed to be there.

You gave me an idea. With today's LED technology a couple of small lights might be built into the lower decks. Maybe on my next one.
I was also thinking of putting in a small piece of paper with my name and info built into the hull. Some day, maybe 100 years from now someone will accidentally or on purpose break the ship and find it. Who knows.

Here is my hull almost completed.
As you can see, I have a bit more finishing work. I gave her one coat of tung oil and some imperfections came out and some residual glue spots, but I think I can fix all of that.
