I've done quite a lot of work since my last main update here, only a lot of it was tweaking the various stays and other lines. There were a lot of things I was (and still am in places) unsure about Still, I have gone ahead and modelled the sails and have begun installing them. The bowsprit sails, course-sails and topsails are all ready to go. I just need to install the topgallant sails, and then I need to model and install the boom sail. I may do the various stay-sails but my computer is struggling so I might skip them for now. I'll have to see.

After all that's done, I just need to link up the remaning hauling tackles / lines to the sails (so they're not just floating there ) and then I can just work on all the small jobs. Build the figure-head, decorate the quarter-galleries, build the anchor, decorate the side a little bit, and then add materials (colors) to finish her off. Then I can stick her in a scene! I'm very proud of the progress of this one and happy that I've managed to make it this far!

I've had a look for that book but you're right, it's very expensive. The cheapest copy I could find was £50 or so and that's well out of my budget range for the moment. I'm working with what I have for now and I'll see if I can get this on the next project.

Well gang, Speedwell is finished except for installing the anchors and adding coils over all the belayed ropes. It has been a seven-year collaboration with David Antscherl and I think the finished model has beautiful lines. She has just enough rigging to make it interesting without the repetition of a full ship rigged setup. Thanks to Chuck for his excellent blocks and rope which really dress up the model. All blocks for sails are included even though they are not present.

Thanks to all who have commented on her build over the years and I'll be back in the fall with, hopefully, a new project.

I'm sure some of you are aware of this, but since I couldn't find earlier topic on MSW i figured I'll drop this marvelous gem here. basically you can take a virtual tour onboard Titanic. it is beautifully modeled and there's a real feel of being present on the actual ship. those of you who haven't already be sure to check it out.

I've made some test for my Pegasus with water simulation, and wake behind the ship wasn't that much pronounced. can't remember the exact number right now, but I did some researching regarding sailing speed of the 6th rate sail ship and the number wasn't that high. I've entered the number into sim and... was mildly disappointed with the effect... oh well...

herask reacted to Waldemar in „Święty Jerzy” („Sankt Georg”) 1627 – reconstructing an opponent of „Vasa”
The vessel  “Święty Jerzy” (eng. “Saint George”) was an admiral ship of the Polish fleet in the 3rd decade of the 17th century, so it can be said she was an indirect opponent of the Swedish “Vasa” of 1628 in the struggle between the two then belligerent nations.

She took a major part in the battle of Oliwa in 1627, capturing by boarding the opponent admiral ship “Tigern” (eng. “Tiger”). The following year, in a retaliatory land-borne attack on the fleet base, led personally by the Swedish king, she was smashed, set on fire and eventually sunk by heavy artillery – large calibre demi-cannons (24-pdrs). Perhaps rather short operational story, nevertheless quite intensive (detailed descriptions of both epic fights have survived).

Ultimately, the intention is to build wooden scale model, and a 3-D reconstruction in Rhinoceros is currently underway. The starting point is the two extant fleet’s inventories and contemporary iconography of the battle, mainly a painting made only a few years after the battle.

While many details are sourced – of necessity – from various depictions and written works, I have also tried to retain the general layout of the ship as depicted in the painting of the battle, such as the large counter with a bas-relief (or painting) associated with the ship’s name and the low-lying gunroom (entirely below the gun deck). Given the rather low sternpost, this implies that the rudder must have been operated from the level of the gun deck, and not (as usual?) in the steerage located one level higher.

Swedish, Polish and Dutch ships at the Battle of Oliwa 1627; painting by Adolf Boy, contemporary resident of the fleet base

Local documents of legal nature suggest that the ship was built using a skeleton technique (as opposed to the shell method), and I have made efforts to shape the underwater body of the hull so that it could be achieved by most of the known skeleton methods (as can be derived from contemporary Iberian, French and English works on shipbuilding). At the same time the assumption was made no scale drawings on paper in the construction process were made, only true-scale tracing on the shipyard platform/ground.

On the other hand, it is believed that ships built in the southern Baltic area had many features in common (structural, decorative, rigging) with other ships built in the north of the continent, as exemplified by the Dutch built Swedish “Vasa”, Dutch manuscript (mainly on rigging) of around 1650 or the Dutch monumental work on shipbuilding by Witsen, so masterfully interpreted by Ab Hoving. As a result, in contrast to the conceptual features of the ship (hull shape), these are the main sources used for the reconstruction of structural and rigging elements, besides the Scandinavian early 17th century contracts for building men-of-war and the French works containing data on timber scantlings (largely Atlantic-oriented “Construction des Vaisseaux du Roy” of 1691).

Some visualisations of the 3-D model in the present (unfinished) state:

All looks very nice, Mark. Good process thinking on your run of moldings as well. Hdd you considered painting friezes on paper off-model and gluing them on in sections? Many contemporary models were painted this way. It obviates the need for awkward masking or working against gravity. And, if you mess up a piece, it's easily replaced. The friezework on Comet was done this way:

Glenn, your Winchelsea is coming along beautifully!

Ship modelling excellence is not something I was born with. It has been a long and trying journey with many scrap pieces along the way. You just need to decide whether you wish to build many good models or a few amazing models in your lifetime. If you're satisfied with the former that it's much easier. If you're a perfectionist it's all about the journey and making sure every piece is a perfect fit. The first time you decide to install a piece that is not quite perfect you've crossed a threshold that could easily become the norm.  So lot's of remakes and ungluing along this path but ultimately the one I find most satisfying.

herask reacted to Egilman in J-47GE-27 Turbojet drawn in Solidworks then eventually 3D printed at 1/32nd scale...
Hi Brothers... It was suggested that I post this here to bring it to a more appropriate forum for it all cad work and 3D test printing... I've been at it for five weeks now over in my F-86F thread....

Essentially I've learned enough that I've just embarked on version 5 of the design.. Currently it is only half designed, the forward half....

    So what is a J-47GE-27?

A J-47GE-27 is the engine that powered the F-86F day fighter, the plane that took the Mig 15 to task over China/North Korea during the Korean War...

My sources of info are of course the US Airforce tech manuals and HD videos from the company that refurbishes them today... It is the most produced Turbojet engine in history with well over 30,000 of them produced...

And powered everything from the F-86 to the pylon engines of the B-36 & B-47.... Today, they are being used in race boats and land speed record cars, with a healthy industry of rebuilding them for aircraft restorations...

Of course, HD video snapshots help a great deal as well...

I'm using two pieces of software for this, Solidworks for the 3D modeling, and Gimp for the HD image scaling/measuring .... The Image above in Gimp has been leveled and enlarged to full size, (yes the intake diameter is really 3 ft across) the blue dashed lines are index lines I use to measure various sections...

    In Solidworks,

I use the cutaway drawing and basic dimensions from the TO's & TM's to scale the drawing to full size and set it as a locked background image to start the process... and I model from there....

This is as far as I've gotten...

At this point I started 3D printing to test if it is going to come together correctly.... And I learned a few of the limitations of scaling and 3D printing... 1/32 scale is a scale in which the item cannot be an identical representation of the real thing... Allowances in both look and design need to be made to get something that will closely resemble a J-47... A larger scale will be easier to do not so much compensation has to be made...

Anyway this is where I'm at at this point in the journey...

Starting the 5th generation of iterative design... Essentially to get the 3D print requirements satisfied and still produce a good scale model....

Well, if it is so easy I would love to see some of your Fusion 360 work (-: Never tried it and not going to either because it's cloud & subscription based. Multinational software companies like AutoDesk want us all to work in the cloud so they can mine more valuable private data.

I suppose what tools you pick depends on what you want to achieve with them. It's easy enough to slap together some objects in a 3D CAD or modelling package and they might look good on your screen but if there's "naked or non-manifold edges" in your objects they are not really "solid" and our 3D prints might fail amongst all the other issues...

Have been using MOI 3D for Donkeys years and got a license when it was still cheaper but even at it's current price you will not find much beter al though it's always wise to keep an eye on any new kids on the block course (-:
