Received the optivisor today , I was a little worried after reading some of the amazon reviews. Many stated the lenses fall off and unit was heavy . Well after using it for a couple hour today I didn't have any problems with the lenses if anything I thought they locked in rather well and as for weight I used lithium batteries as they are about half the wieght as regular batteries and found it very comfortable and I do like that I can wear my glasses under them

    Last night progress.

This is just some strips of wood that I wanted to put there to see how would look like. But this is not the right size. I'm going to have to trim the wood on the side a bit.
I noticed that is quite a discrepancy between the plans and the actual Construction. In one section,  the directions /plans called for 10 strips
    but you really need 7.

I think this is something I'm going to have to look out for for the entire build.

    Hello Shawn
i am also a noob to wooden ship models and chose the longboat as my first build as well . I expect to be done in the next week . It was a lot more challenging than I had expected but was a fun boat to build and I learned a lot already from both this forum and my mistakes. Hope you start a log so we can follow along

Here is a pic of the combined lift lines that I created from the kit drawings. I neglected to include anything aft of "Q" section line. (The pic is foggy in some areas because you are looking through nine layers of tracing paper. These sheets of paper I glued onto my lift blanks.

i "corrected" this omission after having glued the patterns to the lift blanks, by taking points off the drawing detail 2-H, after adjusting for my lift blank thickness.
But, I didn't really have a clear picture of how the complex shape of the hull married together with the sharp angles of the stern stanchions.  In retrospect, I probably should have ended my hull at "Q" section line, but I didn't, I just smoothed the curves of the upper lifts to a pleasing termination. (Call this Big Mistake #1 -- BM#1 -- I'll revisit this later).
Next I assembled the raw materials of my lift blanks into the proper size.
I used poplar from the craft section of a local lumberyard, which came wrapped in plastic. The blanks were 1/4 and 1/2 (actually 7/16) inches thick. It didn't take long for these thin sheets to warp once in the humid basement shop. But, I figured (hoped) that by alternating the cupped surfaces the glue would bond them together.
There is a split between section lines "M" and "N" which divides the aft third of lift 5,6,7 and 8, which are all 1/4" thick, from the forward two-thirds, which are 1/2" thick for lift 5/6, and 1/4" for lifts 7 and 8. This was done to provide more waterline lift points where the stern shape transitions so much more than the bow. The lifts below lift 5 are the full length of the hull. (I hope this doesn't wind up being BM#2!).

After gluing on the lift patterns to each blank, they were cut out with a saber saw.

The lowest three lifts were glued together, the aft-third four lifts glued together, and the forward lifts glued together, in three separate subassemblies to facilitate initial shaping. Here is the stern subassembly with initial shaping on the right
Then the three subassemblies were glued together.
After setting up in the clamps and vice overnight, I gathered together my arsenal for shaping the hull.

I used the Waste" from around the kit's laser cut bulkheads as templates for the shaping.
Rasping, sanding, filling, more sanding, and an acceptable hull emerged.

Then the topside needed attention. There is a slight rise to the deck from stern to bow.
And a camber to the deck from centerline to the sheer.

This pretty much completed the major shaping of the hull.

    Hi Folks

I must be the member that visits the forums at most, but to shy to begin to build several kits that I have waiting.

It wasn´t till our last earthquake that some models built by my father in Pittsburgh. I begun to buy some of them on eBay.

I´m talking about basic kits from Scientific (solid hulls), but belive me, he was an artist. I woud like to share my log of the 1851 America in the near future. But I wanted to share some different first

About 6 years ago I bougt the Royale Caroline Kit and the Giorgio Oscoulaty Anatomy of the Ship Book.
The Kit Fogure head is metal casted and it doesn't look to good for me.

More ove, looking ad the drowings from Giorgio Osculati and some carvings from the Rope.I begun lookig for an upgrade.
Many years ago I've foubd an artist who got amazing results, He made all the carvingsor arnaments in brass, but he didn't sell anything.

Today with the help of a friend of mine we came up to this results (a 3D printed figurehead in resin) that I wanted to share with you.

Please let me know if you like them. I'm looking for a good gold paint to airbruh it.

    Thanks a lot!

I first thought this boat was not going to be much of a challenge, called that wrong 😳  . It has been a fun boat and I have learned a bunch doing it . I know she's not much to look at but being she is my first I will always have a place in my heart for her 😍.I hope to finish her up in the next couple weeks ,and post the final pics . But here is where I am at now

    Hello
I started this longboat about a week ago , I am new to building model boats . I can't really rate the kit I got from MODEL SHIPWAYS , as this is the first one I have ever saw but I have not had a problem with anything yet and the instructions seem pretty straightforward there has been a few times I have had to read it over but that's probably cause I'm a newbie.   Here are the photos of what I have got accomplished on it so far .  I hope to finish hull by the weekend I will cheat and use the printed frieze under the top rail because it's to small and I'm not the best painter but I'm working on it lol will post finished hull over weekend,
