Looking good Tom. The only suggestion I would make is to start tapering the ends. If you don't get on that soon, you will get a serious lesson on stealers & spiling towards the finish.

    Hello everyone
i have been working on the trim ,fenders and gangway ladders. As for the hanging knees I have half of them cut out lol. I don’t know why but I keep putting them off .
my plan is to get those done tomorrow  .

Here are the pieces of the gangway ladder

i assembled them them ,then added the trim and fenders .I am getting close to the end of this build ,I think i can finish it up next week.Im already thinking about my next project, I’m thinking to try a ship in a bottle .For now I need to concentrate on buttoning up this beast.
Here is what she is looking like.

Thanks for looking in on my build

I did manage to get the other side Wales done and mounted and started on the gun deck . I got a good amount of it dry fit . I hope to be able to get the rest fit and get it sanded and glued together over the coarse of the week. Here are a few pics of how she is looking at this stage of the build .

Thanks for checking out my progress

Well, reworking the cannons are out   I can't reliably jig them into any tool I have for turning without damaging them or the cannon suddenly rotating on the cascabel.   Oh well...  I have 12 of the 24 carriages (wood parts only) assemble.  Fiddly things and since the upper deck(s) guns are even smaller, I'm going to go with a different design.  Once all 24 are assembled, I'll add the hardware, blacken the barrels and install them.   Drilling for the eyebolts, making the training rig, etc. will follow.   For those keeping score, hull is pierced for 26 ports on the gundeck, but the French (as this point in time) left them unfilled for access to anchor cables, etc.   Also, there two are on the forward side of the stoves/kitchens and room to work them (and for recoil) is limited.  I'll post some progress photos once the carriages are assembled and also as I make them ready with all the hardware, etc.

Hi, I'm Keith from Ohio.  I have been building plastic static models of different ships for years and only recently decided to try my hand at wooden ship models. Turns out my wife is a huge fan of tall ships, so she supports my new hobby completely!
Sadly all I have to work with is AL because that's all my local hobby shop sells.

I am finalizing an AL Aberdeen Schooner that started as the Scottish Maid but due to ignorance on my part and it being a really crappy kit...well, she's being renamed and has a different look than the Maid.

After reviewing the plans and build logs I noticed I set the stairs in the wrong position .
So I had to loosen the glue and remove the stairs and the center gun deck support .

I re installed the stairs in the proper direction and then had to cut and shape another gun deck support beam,as there are one one each side of the stairs. Ivthen glued those in and now I think she is proper.

I worked on the after hatch and grating  this week . I tried to do the grating like G.L. did on his Cross Section , but ran into three major issues while trying to use his method.

    1. I do not have a small table saw.
     (but I will soon 😁)

    2. After many attempts I ran completely out of patience.

    3. The most important thing is I slap ran out of talent ,(after sooo many failed attempts I finally realized it was beyond what I am capable of at this point )

So I cheated and glued a template on a piece of cherry and drilled small holes in the needed spaces, and used a small square file to open them up some .

I have to say that the grating project has been the hardest thing for me to overcome on this build so far . I got it done it looks ok , maybe someday I will re make it but for now this is how she looks.

I am going to work on the hanging knees for the gun deck next , before I forget about them again.

    Thanks for looking

Thanks Tom I appreciate the compliment. If you take your time and think it through it’s  very enjoyable doing a scratch build . I think you could do it . The wood was the hardest part for me . I had never had to think about the different woods before and had to use google a great deal to figure out what wood looked like what and then try to envision it on the boat . The Cross Section is very well drawn out this is only my second scratch build and have only had a few issues that confused me . It’s great for a beginner like myself. .
I was fortunate enough that G.L was working on his cross section at the same time just a bit ahead of me . Him and his log helped me out a lot .

Tom - I mixed something I call Dijon Yellow. And it truly matches the color of Grey Poupon. I went the opposite direction - started with Buff and yellowed it up some. With a little white & brown for seasoning. When mixing any paint do one of 2 things - make more than you could possibly need or make dang sure you mix drop by drop and write down the recipe so you can reproduce it.

After you finish A I would suggest the garboard next. These are kind of tricky and are typically a wider plank then the rest. Some people will also use the same width for the plank right above it, hence the possible need for different widths for regular planking. There are a few guidelines you can follow for the garboard that I can pass on when you are ready. If the garboard is not laid correctly it will have a negative impact on the rest of your job - especially at the bow.

Don't know how much tapering at the bow & stern you have done yet, but don't wait more than a couple of strakes the start. That will keep you from having to make planks with toothpick ends or doing a lot of spiling later on.

I understand your thoughts on the dividers. You should really spend the money on a good one when you are ready, so do that when you can afford to drop a few bucks. The one I use are now priced around $125 on Amazon. That said, they really can eliminate some of the questions you are asking. You can recalculate bands in the middle of planking, and they will tell you how wide planks should be. After putting in the garboard and a few planks above it, I was partially done with band C and decided to make 1 band out of the remaining space. Dividers made that a simple matter.

You are about to hit the nastiest part of the job. Getting those sticks running down the side of the hull and then turned 90 degrees to cover the transom is challenging. We all soak planks and then bend them. What worked well for me at the transom was soaking them and then putting a twist in them. I used two vises, clamped the wet stick in one, twisted the other end (1/2 twist for most, full twist for 1) and put that in the other vise. Then heat it or let it dry naturally. If you decide to do that be aware that one side of the hull needs a clockwise twist the other side needs counter clockwise. I don't remember which was which but You should see what I'm talking about.

    Have fun.........
