Mike,
Thanks for the good call.. again
Really feeling great to have you working on this ship together, and Ian
I opened up MSW in the morning, and then read your replies... OMG those links!!!
They are all superb models! I can stare on 1 ship for like 10-15 minutes!! and I watched them all using my office hours! (yea.. I'm a bad employee )
Really thank you for sharing us the links, and they are certainly good references for my colour scheme
Anyway, I think you posted the same link on some different ship models...
I think they should be
4. Thames: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66457.html
7. Minerva: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66278.html
8. Diana: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66303.html
Ya, I can see the thick black wales in the plans wonder y Corel skip that part
I actually bought a boat from CMB, but I'm not gonna just paint it and put on my ship.. instead I'll treat it as a 'mould', and build one from scratch
Ian,
haha.. modelling is now part of my life, I really have no idea what else to do besides that
oh ya, maybe it's also because i'm still single so, I'm always free
Anyway, I'm now pondering on the color scheme.. progress might go slow
Thanks for the compliment I think many ships have their port surrounds painted to red
Hope to see yours soon!

Tom...well slap me upside the head, never crossed my mind to grab my big girl drill bits, wow, I bet I will remember that next time I need to make a ring, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Mark, started sanding and shaping oars last night, really hoping to finish her off for good by the end of the weekend!
Chuck, I really did enjoy this little build, the best part of it was the clear, concise instructions to follow...that really makes all the difference in the world! So looking forward to setting the Syren free from her cardboard prison
Steve, it is amazing the knowledge I have picked up over the course of the past year....if I continue to learn and grow at a fraction of that rate then maybe one of these years I can actually offer some newbie some real advice and sound like I know what I'm talking about!

BEAUTIFUL!
The lion sticky-outty thingy looks fine. What bothers me is that your fleet seems on course for a major disaster sailing right off the end of the table. Thank heavens Columbus disapproved the 'earth is flat' theory.

Okay, promised pictures,
dang tiny hooks that had to be fashioned...there's gotta be an easier way lol
In the process of making the traveler ring now
Here she sits
a few pics of the rope detail (yes I see one of the belaying pins needs to be repainted)
I have one more line, the Jib sail halyard, to complete and then all the rigging will be done.
Then it's making the grapnel and the oars and I can put this one in the completed column!!!
Yipee, I can hear the Syren song

I'm excited for you Rich. New adventures and all that.

Pinrails--
Here are the pieces, roughly cut--
The pencil mark is scribed from the overhang of the rail, you can see that they are not all equal (especially the lower right piece--which is the forward most starboard piece).
I scribed a line from the inboard face (unfortunately this doesn't show well in the photos), and marked the holes to be drilled with a pencil then a pin. The scribed line will get sanded away as the piece is thinned to the right thickness-
After drilling all the holes, I finished one piece down to the correct thickness and shape, to make sure it would look right--
Here's a comparison between the rough pieces and the finished one--
When I was satisfied with this, I sanded the rest down, and epoxied brass wire anchors into each--
Here they are laid on the deck--
Next will be gluing them into the bulwarks.

And speaking of slow progress--
I've made 13 4mm deadeyes. Twelve will get attached to the channels on the hull, and one extra. My dowel won't yield the 12 more that I need, so I'm just going to wait until the rigging is under way to do those, along with the 3.5mm deadeyes that I will need for the top mast shrouds. By the way, I found one of the brass rings I had lost (not that it's of any real use to me now)!
It's on to the pinrails, and miscellaneous deck work.

Sam:
Just crimp the one on the right together just below the deadeye and it will be perfect. No need for the soft solder to fill that area.
I am fine, just VERY busy. later.

Sam:
That looks good. The size and spacing look about right. Nice work.
One suggestion in these situations is to actually fasten the steps into the hull. This can be done by drilling holes in the back side of the steps and glueing in wood or bamboo pegs and then drilling holes in the hull to accept those pegs. I would use two pegs per step. You can use the pegs mounted into the steps to locate their holes in the hull before drilling.

Hi Sam,
Just catching up with your beautiful Enterprise build, wow! those modifications that you've added are excellent, I especially like your new photo-etched replacement parts, they look great!

Sam,
Maybe some Muy Tai will help. Probably not ... But you know: Work arounds have been invented just for these precious moments. I know, I've had a few myself ...
Some soothing food might help your feline fury against sudden urges ...?

Sam, I have poured over diagrams in rigging books, and I know I have seen at least a sheave or two in all of them. Gotta say though, it is amazing how it is basically all greek to me until I come to the actual application of what I have looked at. I read those books a long while back, and nothing really clicked, but they had to be returned to the library. For me, I seem to be more of a hands on person, gotta actually do it before what I am reading makes sense. Don't know how many times I have seen the term simulated sheave in logs and instructions , but it took that pic Jay posted for that dang light bulb to turn on. Good thing is, once they actually click in my brain, then I retain it. Never seem to be able to forget all the little details once learned: a blessing and a curse lol

@ Patrick,
Thanks.
Yes she is big !
I have to be careful now when i turn her around.
I have to clear the table......and If I want to do something at the topgallant , I place her on the ground
@ Mobbsie,
Also thanks.
Yes the Mirage is a good example how not to do it
And when there is progress, picture will follow !
@ Augie,
The spars are still dowels and in the box.
First i want to finished all the other stuff before I make the spars....
@ Andy,
I shall explain it for you again....
The spare wood is in the vase....not the spars !
And I have no piano in the house, only a ping pong bat !
And no, there are no flowers in the vase.( Don't give Anja any ideas....)
@ Robbyn,
Thank you !
I didn't know that my previous builds are that bad
But I know what you mean and thank you for that
Any news on the Syren?
Oops, i did it again......
@ Sam,
I'm happy that you also understand what Dave is telling us
Then your question....I have not seizing any rope yet.
Mobbsie has make a seizing machine for me and he takes it when he is coming in November.
Then I shall give that seizing a try !
I'll keep you posted on that !
And I love busses !
When i was a kid, I always want to be a bus driver....
For me ,it's not work driving that big thing but fun.
It's playing with it in the crowd traffic in Rotterdam !
And when I have the change to sit in an old one, I have to do that !
When I see all the luxury that I have these days, I was a hard time for those guys in the old days......
@ Popeye,
Thanks also !
And what is going happened one of those days......
You gonna build also a big one ??????
I think you do that one all the credit that she deserved !
Let me reserve a front seat all ready !
@ Wayne,
Also thanks !!!!!
It's just like the first steps of a young child...
Every other step goes better
@ Mick,
You are further then me.
I have not make any spar of yard !
I wait with those till the rigging ( shrouds, ratlines, back and main stays ) are finished.
Then I gonna make the spars/yards.
The mast also not glued.
I will keep them straight with the shrouds, then I can play a little with the tension of the lanyards.
Enjoy your evening out with the music of the sixties
Send from my I-mac
Still at home !

Finally a small bit of progress. I did what I said and graded all day yesterday so i could build today. Got my mast turned around in the right direction, then fashioned the bowsprit and its ironwork
Made the boom, and the iron work and block
am currently working on the gaff, talk about a b******, had no problem with the first side, but took me 4 tries to get the other half, tiny little piece kept breaking on me.
It needs considerable work yet, but I want the glue to harden before I start sanding and filing it into shape

just seeing her as she sits now Robbyn, looks great. I try never to be angry at my work.......all it does is put a negative spin on progress.
If I can make it better......I try........but if not, I leave it........and learn from it. the next build will be all the better for it. your perseverance with this build is very much applauded......it has definitely shown what a modeler and some wood can do. I enjoy your work, and hope to see more

src reacted to Thanasis in "marrying" blocks
Hi Hamilton.
In my below suggestion (this is what I do…) you will need at least one false (zip) seizing.
You seize one block at the end of a thread (a), you make a cow hitch knot (d), through which you pass the bowsprit,
you make a loop and adjust the false seizing (b.) and the second block.
By pulling the free end of the thread (c.) you bring together the two blocks while you fasten them on the bowsprit.
You finish with a drop of glue at the false seizing.
Thanks

src reacted to lambsbk in Hooks and blocks
The single blocks are made the same way but with a line from the bottom of the block and the large wire (which I use to form the becket) moved 90 degrees (or parallel to the block).
The block is placed on the jig.
The line is attached in a similar fashion but with the rigging line extending past the block.
With the attached hook.

Very nice Sam,
When you place the chain on to the hull, be sure that the chain is following the line of the shroud.
You can see how I did that on the San Ildefonso.
And at the last picture, you have to turn the deadeye
One hole at the bottom, 2 up.

src reacted to russ in Enterprise by src - Constructo - 1:51 - or Lessons in Adapt Improvise and Overcome
The deadeyes and chainplates look good.
As for the depth of color you want, I have always made repeated applications of my blackener until I got the color I wanted.

Hey Russ, Thank you for the advice. Havent seen much of you lately, is all well? I found this posting in the metal working forum. It appeared to be a good combination of your advice and my skill level: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/1724-deadeye-straps/#entry108284 Something more like one of the two below? I made a couple of rings with hard solder and then crimped them around the deadeyes. The one on the left I used soft solder to fill the void after crimping around an .020 rod, the one on the right has been left open. Both ways are MUCH easier than how I was trying to do things! Based on the drawing twintrow posted in the rigging forum I am leaning towards the left hand strop.
