cog got a reaction from SHIPSCAT in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
Good to see you here Mike, Jan, OC, thanks for visiting
Some more pics. Pontos PE (Keith, got this set from Australia)
Some reference material
And the underside of the turret. At first I thought it were etched lines, looking more closely ... it's a mesh!!!
Cheers

cog got a reaction from SHIPSCAT in IJN Musashi by cog - Tamiya - 1:350 - PLASTIC - old tool
Yesterday evening I tiled the top of the other two turrets. The first one I started from the wrong end. With the last two I went front to back, which made gluing a lot easier
This afternoon railings on turret two (darn, forgot the bottle Robin )

So far I've invested approximately 4 hours over the last few days in this build. I started with the main turrets ... still going on turret number 1
1st clean up the plastic base
2nd add the brass (1 piece of railing has not yet been glued, 2 pieces more to add)
All the brass on top, and at the fore, are not in the Pontos set. So far it is just FlyHawk PE

Finally started on this big plastic tub. Besides the invisible PE from Tamiya - bring x-ray goggles - I've got both the Pontos detail up set advanced , and the FlyHawk. The latter is quite impressive. No pictures from the Pontos PE. I forgot to take pictures, and on top of that I just dropped my coolpix on the ground, lens first. It seems I might just as well buy a a new one, as repairs will cost me about the same
The Flyhawk had the Nagato booklet, but they sent me a replacement. It seems it is easier to find what parts go where with the proper booklet
Sister ship is built by Greg IJN Yamato 1:350
This will be a slow (agonising) build. I've decided to start with all the small parts like guns and turrets to get some dexterity with the PE. This is worse than the stripdown Fokker DR1 I build from Eduard

Good decision on the roller chockes, now is easier to replace than when you are nearly finished

Small deck fittings
I added the bitts and roller chocks and replaced all the scratch cleats along the cap rail since they were not secure. Some of them will be under tension from the rigging so I made new ones and drilled holes for them in the cap rail rather than just glueing them.
The small white things on the deck are scratch pad eyes for the mast shrouds and stays, most of them are pinned in place since they too will be under tension.
I had hoped to paint the hull today but the temp in my garage is now in the 20’s so I’ll have to find more small work to do while waiting for the weather to improve.

Mr Kim really is an artist. I'm making a start on the machine guns tomorrow and they are flat out daunting.

Beautiful work, Greg. Long ago, I got wrapped around an axle with a 1/700 ship with PE, and that was just a radar set. I have no origami skills.

Hi Carl - Ahh, yeah. '3D Jigsaw' is something I hadn't thought of, but now that you mention it, that's a very apt analogy. I like it! Thanks
Hi Brian - Thanks for your compliments about Shadow. You're right, though. She's a bit of a challenge. But that's the best part of it, I guess.
Hi Bob - very appreciative of your comments, especially about Majellan. One day, I must get around to actually posting the completed photos of Majellan in the Gallery section. One day, one day...
Hi Greg
Many thanks. I agree with you. It's a nice feeling to get back to the workbench. I was beginning to get a little twitchy not being able to work on the boat.
Happy days now !
Have a great 2017 everyone.
Cheers

About a separate conversation tool. At first I worked as a tool that has been bought in a department for creativity. It was cheap. And over time I began to realize that he is not for me. Then for fine threads I made for a pair of semi-circular chisels of needles for sewing machines. Such an instrument and worked. Later I saw the Russian ship modeling forum, I saw a wizard that makes custom micro tool. And I ordered this. When I tried to work it, then very surprised. It was a great tool. I liked him so much that I ordered with time this wizard has several sets. One set for a major thread. To them I do rough carving. Last week I received a parcel are two more boxes. This 2 rightmost box, with dark handles They were as small chisels that were with me, but I ordered the other handle. I also ordered and tools that have I did not work. In Russian Language kljukarzy. Them cut a spoon. I do not know exactly what it is called in English, I found these terms: Short bent gouge / Long bent gouge, Front bent gouge / curved Guge, Spoon bent gouge / Long bent Guge. If I wrote wrong - correct. To my surprise, in a new set of chisels it was even smaller. Straight chisels from 0.8 mm to 3 mm and semicircular: 0.5 !!! - 4 mm. There are also different scoring area and kosyachki. All tools came to me fully sharpened, very sharp. This set is very much helps me in my work. I am sure that even if you do not deal with such a set of thread is very necessary for any ship modeling man. Can you imagine how it helps in the construction of the Admiralty models ship! Even if you collect the set of a set of boxes - a big help.

I started my whaleboat in 1986! Life has so many turns. Wherever your passion takes you, go for it full blast and you will always have the peace of knowing you did your best. By the way, your build is awesome!

Hello Julie
My record break from working on a model is 18 years. It collected dust in a spare room and every time I came across it It reprimanded me for my neglect. The symptoms of my dereliction grew slowly. A day off here and there became the odd week and then month. House maintenance, career, children all consumed my time and my ship became unloved. Occasionally I would blow the dust away and marvel at some item of detail, wondering how I had managed to create it and fearful that my skill would no longer suffice. In the end It became the itch than needed scratching and I resolved to finish it. !8 months later and it was done and everyone that saw it voiced their admiration. While pleased by the comments in the end they didn't really matter, as I had done it for my own pleasure and satisfaction.
So I come to the point of my ramblings................................ do things you like doing the most and if they change go with the flow. What goes round comes around and you generally get a second chance.

hiya EJ!
Yeah....the difficulty is...we (the Dutch) have the odd habit to feel superior, because we used to bully half the world with our infamous VOC.
We find it hard to realise we're no longer on top of the food chain, so we keep pretending...against all odds and reality.
Aren't we cute?
About Facebook....search for my name. Friends and family are my wooden ship adventure cheerleaders.
When I tried to explain....it's not a good idea to slam a bottle of champagne against the bow when finished...they simply claim the bottle to drink! (clever gits!) It's tough to be Dutch! ....specially since we have to deal with the Dutch each and every day ourselves!

Call them what you want it's your log!
I do like to try to use the proper word for a part both for my education and that of who ever is reading my post. That being said, I still don;t always do that. Often times I am trying to explain something that either I or my readers do not fully understand and therefore common wording must be used. I run into that a lot on facebook when I am sharing with my friends and family. If I use wording like abaft, gunwale, bulwark, even port and starboard they can easily get lost. At that time I have to decide how much typing I want to do. Do I explain every term or do I just simplify? Simplify usually wins.
Anyway, welcome back to your build! As you said, it may not be much but it is another step forward and a little closer to finishing.
