Mirabell61 got a reaction from hexnut in HMS Pegasus 1776 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:64 - 16-gun sloop
Little update.....
Build log part 82
am still busy with the rigging, the foremast still needs the topgallant sail, and the two spritsail yards and sails are being prepared......
Nils
the two yards are not rigged yet. Here the sails are ready, the lower spritsail with the water-holes
here can be seen where the thimbles come to use, appropriate lines are belayed at the shroud cleats
at the fore-bits the lines for sheets, clues and jeers are not permanently belayed yet, as the sails still have to be moved during rigging (access-wise). The tackle outside of the shrouds belongs to the shifting-backstay
here mainmast rigged with all 3 sails, except for brace-lines and bowlines

Nils,
Thanks much for the quick response. Although I have many tools for working with metal this task is also beyond my capability as well.
This is an interesting subject "build vs buy" in the world of scratch building and model ship building in general.
Personally, I have no issue with buying something that quickly adds value to my model....and also saves me some time.

Nils,
I went through your posts but failed to find any details on the assembly of your safety railings. It looks like brass tubing or rods and I'm wondering about the small round pieces used on the Balustrades and the type of material you used for the railing.
By the way, the support beams are another beautiful touch of detail. Such an original and creative style on the build.
Just a wonderful piece of detail...any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Little update...
Build log part 80
some impressions on rigging my Swan Class
Nils
again a hand scetch for belaying of the fore bits (On forecastle deck), slight changes to needs pending
one of the yards....., with stirrups, footropes and Flemish horses
the prerigged foresail together with its yard has been moved into place
the tacks of the main topsail stay-sail will be lead over thimbles to the aftmost shroud and lower attached shroudcleats
the truss tackles go down to the eyelets next to the foremast and leaves the lowest block for the sidewise attached cleat on the foremast
for access to the lead blocks under the foremast platform the upmost futtock ratline has been left out until later, have to still fiddle in buntlines and leechlines there
slowly the "sail picture" is rounding up...
14 of the 18 sails are on now....

Update
here a little update on the foremast topsail and the lower squaresail.
My technique for rigging is to pre-rigg the two yards, hang the yards with the attached sail into the slings and then sort out the lines, rigg and belay them to the appropriate terminals. Buntlines, reef lines, leech lines come on a bit later. all the bow lines will go on last, when the braces are set
Nils
I use mini rollers (diam. 2,5 mm) from RB Models webshop as thimles
here thimbles attached for the truss tackles
foresail attached to lower yard
self explaining.....
the scetches for the mainmast yard rigging come very handy again here
these two pre-rigged foremast sails are ready for hanging into the slings

Little update....
I`m at the foremast upper shrouds now and stropping all the blocks for the fore-topsail, which will come next
Nils
I`m rigging (Bracing) the yards at 45° angle
looking a bit more dynamic with braced sails
tack, sheet and brace lines not attached to the lower squaresails yet
one hand for your life the other for the ship......
the third swivel (from bow) points through the lower shrouds, directly obove the swivel elevation the shroud cleats will be attached as well as an additional ratline that also fixes the cleat fastening

Nils and John,
Thanks so much for following my log and all your kind words....new builders like myself need as much encouragement as we can get.
By the way, following your builds has been an education for me....this is one very precise and detailed hobby....but I'm feeling the addiction pulling me in every day now....and the Admiral has noticed it to be sure

congrats Boyd,
Looks like a fine kit you have Chosen, from what is to be seen so far. Also a nice idea to stain the Framework before Assembling, its a nice contrast to the light colored deck, and the interior Fitting out, great looking.....

Hi Nils,
Thanks for coming aboard....and I really appreciate the kind words on the build.
As you know, this is my first build so I can use all the moral support I can get.
I just checked out your scratch build, wow really nice and love the detail work on the inside (another open hull build).....I may borrow a few of your ideas

Thanks Nils and Eric. I'm considering filler blocks, and I'm worried about the area above the batten between bulkhead A and the stem. Not much to grab onto there. I will have to wait and see how the fairing of the gun port frames goes and act accordingly.
Cheers.

Hi Nils,
Simply amazing build.....I'm soooo glad you dropped by my build while it's still in it's infancy. Can't believe the ideas you've spawned in my mind
Thanks again,

Martin,
I often find myself looking at trees or portions of trees with the eye for taxing if it would give an suitable elbow or a nice curved Handrail, or part of a Frame , etc...., especialy since I joined MSW.....

More work on the boats.
Stanchions cut and fixed to inside of hull, then trimmed.
Fitted gunwale covers.
Boat ready for varnish. Oar locks are made from brass thread and fitted in drilled holes on gunwale cover.
These are the two rope tie-offs to go on deck. On small items like this I find it convenient to drill a small hole at the base and glue a piece of wire. Easy to handle them when painting When fixing on deck trim it down to about 5mm, drill a hole on deck, same wire diameter, and glue it with wire inserted in the hole. Much stronger bond.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and likes. I have to admit I agree with Popeye, if I’m going to build it into the boat, I want others to see it. On all my boats so far if I added something below decks I’ve left openings to see it. Or conversely, if you can’t see below decks, there’s nothing worth seeing. So at most I might put an edge of the roof all the way around. We’ll see.
