    The lower fore- and mainmast are made frome spruce, the topmasts from  beech
    The lower mizzen is beechwood und the upper mizzen is from bamboo.That was necessary to get the required strength into the fragile beams. The upmost mizzen-pole is spruce and can be slipped in and out of the socket of the underneath mast Portion.

    The upper cheek areas under the top platforms  shall be blackend as well, including the upmost woolding. The platforms have gotten safety netting.

    The shroud resting batten-Cages are Special and complete soft soldered from the recently made squarebands and 8 pieces of 0,8 mm brass wire. I think those shall be left in brass and not blackend

    Hi I am getting started with my Mary Ann from Billing Boat, So here's a picture of how far I've come so far. This is my first model ship I'm building.When I am "only" 28 years I think that I will achieve to become so good at building large ships. My big dream is to build a HMS Victory when I feel I can handle it ... There's gonna built a number of other ships before. Sorry for my English

    Hi Grant,
    I appreciate your kind words.

    ... and so it goes on:
    The reinforcement (flat iron) for the supporting knee I made out of brass sheet 0.2 mm.
    The support of the channel (round iron bars) was made of brass wire with a diameter of 0.9 mm.

    The second attempt for a support for the channel can be seen in the picture. This is made of a round brass bar having a diameter of 1.5 mm. This is too massive, unrealistic.

    In the next step, these pieces are browned and then mounted.

    I like the approach you have taken to this model. This cutter is also one of my future candidates. Wonderful that you are planing to spend her a suit of sails, shall stay tuned to your build....

    Well, its been quite a long time...
    Summer can be distracting... so many other things to do.

    Here are some pics on my slight progress. Nailing is quite anoying and timetaking, especially when you run out of nails from time to time.

    Mirabell61 reacted to KenW in Fair American by KenW - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48 Scale
    I’ve been away on a week’s vacation out in the American West and am now anxious to get back to modeling.
    My first task is to correct a problem with the work that’s already done.  Two more blocks need to be added underneath the main top for braces.  Adding blocks when the top is already glued in place is not as easy as when the top is free, but the task was done.
    Next I added the shroud cleats to the port side of the model.  The kit didn’t include any shroud cleats so I ordered a pack of them from ME not thinking that their package comes with 10 cleats and I need at least 16.  So I ordered some more and will work on the starboard side when they come.  The cleats are 10mm, and they need to be filed down to about 8mm.  The metal is soft and the filing was easy.
    I added the bunt line and brace blocks to the cross trees of the top masts.  I initially used 5/32 blocks, but they were obviously too big, so I took them off and used 1/8 blocks.  They seem much better.
    I also installed the pendants to both top masts.  Lots more rigging to do.

    The tops have been fitted to the lower masts,and the lower masts have been stepped into the hull.
    Next I will add the shrouds to the lower masts, and then possibly tie the ratlines to each mast, as I go along, so as to break up the most tedious part of any build.

    Tops
    The tops have been completed and the rear rails added (I might add netting later) the tops have also had the blocks added as required. I did not like the kit instruction as to making the futtock shroud plates ,that hold the 3mm dead eyes so I upgraded using Amati ones as shown in the photos, which also included brass hooks as well these match the drawing shown in Rigging Period Ship Models.

    I have now completed making the rest of the mast parts,some differ from the plans as I have cross referenced them with AOTS Diana`s drawings, and I am going with the books drawings, for instance the fore mast, the top mast has no eight square section. All the sections were profiled in my umimat lathe, and all square or eight square sections
    filed ,some square sections were built up as required.
    As showed in the last photos the masts have been dry assembled (so if they look slightly out of line that’s the reason why).The lower masts and tops will be stepped into the hull next after the tops have all the required blocks fitted to them, and the rest of the mast parts held over for now, as I will next make and add the burton pendants and the shrouds to the lower masts before working up the masts.

    dgbot;
    Thanks for the similar advice.
    I removed the too thick of the frames and redid them so after measuring the hull I am off by 2mm.  Which is fine by me.
    I also measured where the canon holes should be and I am good to go.

    Mirabell61;
    Lots of scrap wood which is always used for something.  Cutting and sanding wood is best done outside as I do not have a vacuum setup indoors to remove sawdust.  So I plan to do most of the cutting and sanding of wood in late spring, summer and fall.

    Trust you are preparing for a great Job to be done on the Staatenjacht. Boxes full of Frame fragments look like a large 3D puzzle to me right now, guess all parts are clearly marked.
    Nice Workshop susiduary on the lawn of your garden, thats the right attitude when the sun is shining..., wish you good process and fun with the build
