  1. It looks like the build will be put on hold some more. We are being forced to move due to the owner not willing to change the electric company and plan so 1200 Euros a month electricity is 4 times what I should be paying and I am tired of being taken. I am also tired of the roaches (owner refuses to fumigate) so we move into the town of Rota. Less for rent, closer to work and more room. Down side, no pool. I do get a bigger Man-Cave AND a BUILD ROOM! so it is a win! We will get a hot tub to soak in and the beach is 1 block away. Ya'll be safe, be well and be blessed.

  2. After numerous out of town trips, family interruptions, injured thumb (try opening glue bottles one handed) and breaking off every gun port lid at least 3 times each, the guns are finally on and rigged. 2 six lb. forward and 4 nine lb. finish the fit. High School Football coaching started 2 weeks ago and I am learning 2 new playbooks, offense and defense, so progress will remain slow until November. Sorry lighting is a bit dark.

    Hi Chief

What ship/year is your model?  The reason I ask is that, depending on era, the openings in the channels were holes as you show them only up until 1771 but then slotted with an outboard edge cover board after that, at least in the RN (Goodwin The Construction and Fitting  of the English Man of War, page 187).  I believe that this was the case for American ships as well by the time of Baltimore Clippers in the 19th century.  Hopefully a member will have additional contemporary based information.

Allan, I just now re-read your post and I will elongate the holes on the channels to make them more of a slot. Don't know how it took so long for me to notice this. Thanks!

  4. Looking ahead to get the rigging started on my Dapper Tom and am trying to put a plan together. The problem is, the rigging plans are confusing with lines disappearing into a "maze of lines" that looks like a "pile of spaghetti" (no offense to pasta intended). I understand some lines are not installed if the sails are stowed below in the sail locker. The question is, which ones should be omitted if I do not mount sails? Also, are the lines all rigged symmetrically i.e. if it is on the port side of the yard, does it also go on the starboard side too? More to follow as I "peel back the onion".

  5. Not alot of progress on the boat. I did spend some time on a few tools I found in Grandad's roll top desk I inherited. He was a carpenter, house painter and during WWII he was a marine pipefitter in the ship yard at Portland OR. They were pretty mankey and some rust but a week long soak in penetrating oil, wire wheel in a dremel, steel wool and emory paper did a good job. Still a bit stiff but should loosen up with use.

Hi, I’m Steve47 living near Alicante, Spain but originally from UK. I have recently completed La Flore from Constructo after a four year slog on an off and more recently a loco….. Jupiter from OcCre which I completed in a couple of months. Yesterday, I took delivery of Gorch Fock, also from OcCre, but it remains in the box until I receive my Hobby Zone professional building slip to ease the build. Based on the length if time it took me to complete La Flore, I’m setting aside 6 years for Gorch Fock. Lol!

I have read with interest Mike Hunt’s account of his build of the GF and will continue to follow his progress. I’m sure there are other accounts of this build but as yet, I haven’t had chance to dig into the forum’s posts. It’s good to be here amongst you fellow model shipbuilders and look forward to sharing my model building experiences with anyone who’s interested.

Hola Steve! I currently live in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Cadiz.
