Update on my ROYAL LOUIS 1:200 Heller kit. 32x 36 pounder Cannons (Main Battery) 34 x 32 pounder Cannons (2nd Battery) All loaded. Main Deck weathered and installed. 60 Deadeye straps installed. Next stage assembling 32x 24 pounder Cannons with tiebacks and installing onto the main deck. All in all coming together slowly, reading between the French and English(Download) instructions, as of yet no real problems at all apart from having to wash every part due to mould release so as to give proper paint application first time around. Still swithering whether to paint waterline same light wood colour as Upper Hull then weather it, albeit the waterline does not have any wood grain mould effect on it, but I have lightly sanded it down to give a Matt finish rather than painting it white. Long way to go, an enjoyable build taking my time. Happy Modelling Everyone Staysafe 🤺🤺🤺⚓⚓⚓.

Starting my New Build of 2021.... The "ROYAL LOUIS" 1/200 - Heller. The Drawing of the Hull, the distribution of the artillery and rigging were drawn from a description of the ship's lines by Comte d'ESTAING dated 25 September 1772. The building plans were prepared by the famous Naval architect MR, OLLIVIER. The ROYAL LOUIS was a first rate ship, it was armed with 120 cannons, including 32 x 36 calibre guns each weighing nearly 5 Tonnes. In 1779-1780, ROYAL LOUIS was a lead ship of the Blue-White Squadron, which was part of the so-called "Comte d'ESTAING" America Squadron. Prep work done to Hulls inside and out to make the paintwork more applicable. Cannon carriages started, 4 different sizes, 40 done only another 80 to go, then on to the Cannons themselves. This will be the most time consuming painting within the kit itself, even more so than the stern gallery architecture. 648 parts plus alterations, Big job ahead, quite probably replacing the masts with wooden ones as well. Happy modelling everyone Staysafe and take care 🤺🤺🤺⚓⚓⚓

It's been another Labour of Love... The "Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai" Pyro:1/144 Scale FINISHED My depiction of the "Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai" in full Royal Regalia while saluting the marriage party of Beatrice, Portuguese Infantas marriage to CharlesIII, Duke of Savoy on the April 8th 1521. Adapted from the painting by Joachim Patinir. Happy modelling everyone ⚓⚓⚓🤺🤺🤺

Tbh, it was more out of curiosity regards different Manufacturers across the board, be it Lindberg, Revell, Airfix etc... Guess I just wondered if there was or should be one standard levels of skill ratings across all Plastic model ship building or should it stay the same regards different Manufacturers interpretations. At the moment I am nearing the completion of my First Pyro Kit: The Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai, to which you can find a log on here. I also have a couple of other finished logs in Revell's 1:96 English Man O'war and Airfix 1:72 Golden Hind. These really are my first 2 Kits in nearly a 40 year hiatus, so I am bk learning again. I will say this though the Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai kit even though smaller is imho the same levell as most of the Airfix Classic ships series and better mouldings than quite a few other too. I suppose that's when I first started thinking about level ratings on model kits as I never really took much notice before and definitely wouldn't let it restrict me from buying a particular kit.

Question: Regards Lindberg kits. I know they issue theirs with a skill level, I have only seen levels 1-3, is there a higher level with lindberg kits? If not how would their skill levels compare to say Revell who have a level of 1-5? Just curious as i couldn't find any real information on Lindbergs Skill level ratings. Maybe some of our American modellers could shed light on this? Thanks in advance Robert

Next stage being the rigging, this is not looking good, as I only have these 2 b&w photos at the end of the instructions to go with, I guess this could be a bit make shift, but will try and make it authentic looking as best I can, especially on this size of kit, as I am not used to working on fine detail on this scale without proper instructions, but I have to persevere and see this through the on coming storm. Happy modelling everyone Rob. ⚓⚓🤺🤺

Oh, I understand that, but I would also like to point out, that I to, have the same drawing in a book I have called Galleons and Galleys, but this is a modern drawing and not from the time period, that's why I preferred to go with paintings from a similar time period, not to say they are right or wrong, but there must be something in it. I guess in the end we will never know truly whether this carrack and many others used spritsails for definite or whether drawings or artists impressions were added to or taken away during the course of history.
-
A little bit more progress. Have cut dowels and doubled the yards for the Fore and Main sails as with Carracks from this period. These are all now fitted and painted, the masts are now complete. After some research I will not be including a bowsprit sail or yard as original paintings seem to depict the Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai with none and various other carracks from this period, albeit some do, so I guess it begs the question why did some and some not use them ? My personal opion I prefer a carrack without one, as another identification of the type of vessel, I think adding the bowsprit sail and yard takes into the early stages of the Galleon. I have added a couple of photos of paintings of carracks for information discussions. Next stage is the standing and running rigging if I can get any decent info on it as the kit being 54yrs old only provides 2 poor b&w photos. Happy modelling everyone Staysafe Rob. 🤺🤺🤺⚓⚓⚓

That's what happens when your nearing the end of a build you have loved doing, I was the same with my kit Bill. The comfort I have though when I finished it, was that I was really proud of it, and don't think I could have done better. She now sits tall and proud on display where I see her everday. I'm not normally so ott about anything I do, but I am with this for some reason.

Hi Bill, You could try this company, I know they do Spanish and English pirates think the scale is 1/72. I didn't use the figures for mine as I thought they weren't good enough quality compared to Aifix figures on the Golden Hind. Here's the link to Drum and Flag mate. https://www.drumandflag.co.uk/
