"Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai" Pyro 1:144 scale. Starting to take shape... Everything has came to a halt these past 6weeks due 12hr shifts and of course Christmas. Standing rigging & blocks done, next started rigging the deadeyes for ratlines and running rigging for each corresponding Mast. Looking forward to getting on with this and to finish her off with hand sewn sails, long way to go, but thankfully off work till the 7th January. Hope Everyone had a Merry Christmas, and Happy New year to you all when it comes. Happy Modelling ⚓⚓⚓🤺🤺🤺

Hi Bill, Still working on my Pyro 1:144 "Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai" Everything ground to a halt these last 6 weeks with Christmas and 12hr shifts at work. Just finished the standing rigging, now onto the running rigging and ratlines per mast mate.

Next stage being the rigging, this is not looking good, as I only have these 2 b&w photos at the end of the instructions to go with, I guess this could be a bit make shift, but will try and make it authentic looking as best I can, especially on this size of kit, as I am not used to working on fine detail on this scale without proper instructions, but I have to persevere and see this through the on coming storm. Oh, I understand that, but I would also like to point out, that I to, have the same drawing in a book I have called Galleons and Galleys, but this is a modern drawing and not from the time period, that's why I preferred to go with paintings from a similar time period, not to say they are right or wrong, but there must be something in it. I guess in the end we will never know truly whether this carrack and many others used spritsails for definite or whether drawings or artists impressions were added to or taken away during the course of history.

Hi Ron, I will be following this build with much interest, I have built this model twice in my lifetime the last one being finished 5 months ago, and I must say it is my Favourite Airfix kit of all time. Happy modelling 🤺⚓👍

A little bit more progress. Have cut dowels and doubled the yards for the Fore and Main sails as with Carracks from this period. These are all now fitted and painted, the masts are now complete. After some research I will not be including a bowsprit sail or yard as original paintings seem to depict the Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai with none and various other carracks from this period, albeit some do, so I guess it begs the question why did some and some not use them ? My personal opion I prefer a carrack without one, as another identification of the type of vessel, I think adding the bowsprit sail and yard takes into the early stages of the Galleon. I have added a couple of photos of paintings of carracks for information discussions. Next stage is the standing and running rigging if I can get any decent info on it as the kit being 54yrs old only provides 2 poor b&w photos. Happy modelling everyone Staysafe Rob. 🤺🤺🤺⚓⚓⚓

That's what happens when your nearing the end of a build you have loved doing, I was the same with my kit Bill. The comfort I have though when I finished it, was that I was really proud of it, and don't think I could have done better. She now sits tall and proud on display where I see her everday. I'm not normally so ott about anything I do, but I am with this for some reason.

Hi Bill, You could try this company, I know they do Spanish and English pirates think the scale is 1/72. I didn't use the figures for mine as I thought they weren't good enough quality compared to Aifix figures on the Golden Hind. Here's the link to Drum and Flag mate. https://www.drumandflag.co.uk/

Thank you for those kind words, I completely overhauled the paintwork and added architectural features as well as hand sewing my own sail, as I just didnt like Revell's finish.

Thanks Ron and Louie for your kind words. A reason for the fast process of late Louie is just that I have a bit more time off work atm. Also I paint all my parts before dry fitting then final assembly, so a lot of what you see may well have been painted a while ago, but not having time or just taking a break comes to the fore sometimes, don't get me wrong the masts and and cannons were done the past 2 days as I found myself with extra some welcome time to spend.

All Cannons and decking now painted and fitted. Mizzen and Bonaventure masts fitted. Life boat and Awning built, painted and Fitted, the Awning is only dry fitted as per instructions obviously to help with rigging later and to show life boat when required. Now Making and doubling the Yards as was with these Carracks in the 15th-16th centuries, for my own hand made Sails which will follow later. First time I have ever made my own yards so hoping this turns out ok. The Sails will also be altered from the normal(hopefully) with a Double billowing effect from the middle as well as at the ends of the sail. Reinforced the Main and Fore masts as per normal with the split masts from some kits.

Nice one Bill, looking forward to seeing how your transfer comes out onto your main sail, that is always something that has intrigued me(transfer printing) albeit I do not have a printer, ahem! Let's just say me and printers have always had a short term relationship lol..

Hi Bill I don't think there is a lot of difference length wise but the Wasa maybe a couple cm smaller width wise.

Hi Bill, that's good, The Airfix Wasa has a 1:144 scale albeit as I said before these scales are not historically accurate as these Airfix tall ship boxes are all the same size more or less. There is a Prince on ebay but very expensive at £69.95 someone trying to take advantage of its rarity I think. Yes I paid full rep price for the Soleil Royal and Hms Victory both £159 each,but brand new, even pre owned ones go for about £130+ so there is little point in that incase something is missing or broken, these kits are well sought after, the Victory I got, the seller had 3 brand new and I kid you nor these went within 20mins of being posted. Not sure if I have anything for my Christmas that I really want, may just get myself a Zvezda or Heller kit i dont have but nothing expensive, not that i need anymore atm.

Hi Bill I forgot to add there is actually another 2 kits to this stash that Airfix Endeavour and Zvezda Conquistador "San Gabriel" which is actually a rebox of Revell's Vasco da gama's Nau San Gabriel. For some reason I do not have a photo of the Endeavour on my phone atm.

Hi Bill, as you can see there is a couple of doubles, like the Heller Royal Louis, the reason for this one was because I had to write on of them off, as it came with 2 right hand Hulls and the Company never replaced or refunded myself,, and Heller never replied to my emails, I have also seen that this has happened on a few occasions with this particular kit for some reason ? Also the Heller and Zvezda Hms Elizabethan are both the same kit unbeknown to myself at the time, I also thought they were of different size which they weren't, I guess you live and learn, however they did not cost much, so not so out of pocket.

Hi Bill, No I haven't built all your ships you referred to. I have never bought the Cutty Sark as it just didn't do anything for me, albeit the starter pack I did was a stocking filler last xmas. The Uss constitution I do not have as I can't get hold of the 1:96 scale one, I do however have the 1:96 USS United states but unbuilt atm. The Heller Victory I have too unbuilt as I have just purchased it and of course I have built the Golden Hind. Of the ones I have mentioned I have built a couple a long time ago when I was young, but now lost, a few of the kits I couldn't get for one reason or another when I was young like Hms Prince and the Wasa but have now been able to purchase this last year. I am only just bk building kits this last 6months as covid hit and I was laid off, its been 40yrs or so since I last built kits so at the moment I have 3 built, English Man O'war, Golden Hind and Cutty Sark starter kit and the " Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai" is my work in progress, so that's kinda 4. Not sure which kit will be up next think it might be a Heller French one time will tell mate. Yes Space is a problem atm we have a spare room full of granddaughters toys, but this will become available in time, so its steady as you go here with builds albeit I have shelving in to take care of anything just now.

Hi Bill, here is also a picture of my Airfix 1:72 Golden Hind and small Cutty Sark starter kit against my English Man O'war I was building at the time. As you can see although the Golden Hind is half the size, it is still big enough to make a very represntable kit.

On the topic of Scale Bill, here is the kit I am working on just now, the Santa Catarina Do Monte Sinai a 54yr old kit next to my English Man O'war which I completed as I say, it's not about size, but the Architecture for me.

Hi Bill The Heller Royal louis is quoted at 48cm finished La Sirene is quoted at 43cm The Airfix kits around the same up and to 46cm. The biggest ones are Revell Spanish Galleon which is the same size as the Man O'war and the 2 big Heller ones, Soleil Royal is quoted at 77cm While the Victory is the largest at 110cm. Thing is with most of the kits listed that even though there are a lot of scale differences it doesn't mean a lot as most were made to fit the boxes which are actually the same size(Airfix that is) so scale isnt really historically accurate. It's just a pity these kits weren't made larger they would have been awesome to build, taking nothing away from them though I think they are still quality kits like I said it's not all about size for me but architecturally it has to be very good and well moulded.
