Cheers for the kind words mate! Been working on the hinges today. I see I need to do some touch up on the paint still. Working on the ones on the ship now. /Matti
-
Thanks guys! Nope no dog Nigel and hopefully my cat doesn't get her paws on it. Mark, BB is one hinge short and has none of the iron straps at the top where it connects to the horizontal pole. But the basic shape is good so I'm happy with it . /Matti

Hey all, started to work on the rudder. I want to make my own hinge construction to make it more in scale and more wonky like the original. The original shape is good but had no cut outs for the hinges so I wanted to have them aswell. /Matti

Wow Karl, gorgeous picture! Pav, I build most during TV time. When I'm free I tend to build later hours. /Matti

Nice picture Karl! Actually it's not the dust that concerns me, but the cat and everyday life with small kids. You see I don't do much building of this kit in the (unheated) workshop, but keep it in the house and grab it when I get some time. One great thing with this hobby (at least when building a wood kit) is that there's no nasty fumes or dust -the few steps that do involve them I do in the workshop of course. But there are so many hours when building and painting a model like this so no way I would do it in the modelshop. I would feel like a hermit monk and a rather bad dad and husband. The kids are really interested in modelbuilding themselves so thats another good thing as I let them help me when they want.. But it's one thing having it secured now when its reasonably small, another when I start the rigging. A secure case would be great, and if it didnt look horrible would also benefit the positive atmosphere towards my hobby. /Matti

Thanks for the generous words and likes! I will definately consider the idea to make a lightweight cover, thanks for the heads up. Tony, looking forward to see your log. If you need a walkthrough of how to post images let me know. /Matti

Yeah for sure mate, but part of me dreads the rigging and also to find a good showcase, something I need before starting the masts and rigging. /Matti

Thanks for the kind comments and likes! Keith, I'm building her as when she was in harbor. I´ve finished the gunports. I'll wait with the messageports until later on. So finally I'm done with the gunports:
-
Yeah, you make good points. Adding masts and all will be difficult as it is. I will definately consider waiting. Cheers mate. /Matti

Guys, I'm really glad you like it, thanks! I almost done with the hatches now. She is turning more and more fragile now and soon it's time for addidng the railing and that must be the parts easiest to break. /Matti

Thank you very much Nigel! I knew what result I was aiming for but was a little nervous if I could make it work. Thanks for the likes also everyone!

Thanks Erik! No those areas were only tarred. She was likely painted white painted below the waterline even if they havent found definitive evidence for it yet. /Matti

Thanks man, there are many ways to paint so google and youtube model weathering and you'll find great tutorials and info, at least on plastic models. I've been working on the gunports lately. The look I want is when the gunports are not strictly opened, but some are closed or halfway opened. I like the uneaven rough and everyday life look of it. Here are some pics of Batavia and Götheborg with the look I like: That ment I had to plan for the cannons to be inside. I also had to plank the back of the hatches as the original BB are hollow. That was actually good as it was easy to stain the planks in the same color as the rest of the ship. The closed hatches are scratched. Here is how far I've gotten: /Matti

Cheers Jesse, about your weathering question earlier check these posts in this thread: 154, 157, 181, 346, 349, 1060. /Matti

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
