jct reacted to Laxet in US Brig Niagara by Laxet - FINISHED - Model Shipways
A bit of marlinspike seamanship here. I have never tried this at such a small scale before. It looks pretty good, even if I twisted a stitch or two. This is very difficult at this scale. Sorry for the out of focus picture. Can you believe I'm also a photographer?

Very Nice Dale,
Well done she's a beauty. I plan to start my Niagara build soon and will be referring to your log for guidance.

Well, this is it. As far as I'm concerned, she is done. Here are some more final pics. It's been fun. I'll be monitoring this forum in case anybody wants to discuss anything.

Hi everyone,
Spring is finally trying to put the ridiculous winter we had behind us. That means yard work which is cutting into shipyard time. Definitely not a fair trade but it beats shoveling snow in -6°F weather.
Jparsley,
I just used Minwax stains, Golden Oak and Special Walnut and then covered with a satin polyurethane also by Minwax.
I started making many of the deck furnishings. Nothing is glued down yet except the ladders. I have pilot holes (1/16" diameter) in the decks where the masts will be located. I need to open those to size before I start gluing things to the deck. I did have a question about whether the masts should be positioned vertical to the decks or as the instructions show tilted back toward the stern about 5°. I am thinking the reason they are tilted is to allow them to become vertical when the sails are full. I plan on displaying with about 3/4 of the sails full anyway so I will most likely put the masts at 90°. Still thinking about it.
Any thoughts out there?
Tom

Thanks, J. I have followed the advice, and with plenty of coaching from my First Mate, have filled in with balsa wood and shaped the bow. I also sanded the aft frame 16 to prepare for planking. It was a busy week, so didn't get anything else done. I took a couple of photos just to prove I did it. Hope everyone's weekend was nice.

JULY!!!! wow.......I've been away for a while! sorry Jerry......getting these builds caught up has been slower than I thought! I really didn't count on building the Andrea Gail either.........it's been very hard to turn away from it. that build is almost finished though, and I may pick this build back up next. I was going to continue on one of the other fishing boats, but I may have to order stuff for them.
to recap what needs to be done here, I was unhappy with the bottom paint......it seems too low, and there was some bleeds in the corners. this needs to be corrected, before I can continue. once this is done though.......I have plenty of parts ready to go on the model, and there will be some major progress to be seen. I ask for your patience.........I will be back shortly oh......yes flat red!......gotta get some of that!

As promised yesterday, here are pics of the completed standing rigging. They (the pics) are not terrific, but you get an idea.

Thanks Frankie...and no problem here with the criticism, I believe these logs should help serve others as well as give us an outlet to share our hobby, if a post can help someone and prevent an error I'm all in favor of it.

When working on a model I would ask cub memebers how I was doing and when they told m what I was doing wrong I would take it and try to fis the problems constructive criticism is important if you tel someone they are making a part wrong you should be able to tell that person how to fix the problem. If you are just trying to be a know it all and think belittling someone that is not the way to be.

It is a great model and the workmanship is beautiful. Whenever I post a critical thing about someones model I always worry it will be taken wrong and as a result I usually don't post anything. "If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything" school of thought. But on the other hand my thinking was that if it was my model and I had taken a misstep, I would want to hear it. But I know me, and so I also know that I do not take criticisim well, no matter how it is intended.

Hello J,
After your suggestion of the 18th Century Longboat I was quick to review your log. I am so impressed! What a fantastic job. If I decide to try this build i don't think I would be able to follow in your footsteps. I love the entire build. Something to think about but it is along the lines of what I was although thinking about. How nice, J.
Best,
Jerry

Hello to all my model builder friends who have put up with me for a pretty long time......
Well, you won't have to put up with me any longer as far as the Half Moon build is concerned. I am very happy, indeed, to say that my Half Moon is sitting on its designated shelf in the entry way of our home across the straights from the Cutty Sark.
At this time I wish to thank all my fellow members of NRG's MSW for their kind patience, assistance and indulgance during the build of this model. I started the construction on December 12th and happily finished on March 14th so as you can see this build was not a long one but i assure you without the help of many like J, Lawrence, David, Glenn, Popeye, and others, who I hope will forgive me for not mentioning their names, would have taken much longer to complete. Here are some photos of the finished model on a plain cradle (which will be finished one of these days). So, besides helping the Admiral with her Bounty, I will start scouring the halls of model ships to determine what will be next. Again, many, many thanks to you all.
Best,
Jerry

When I did my model of the America years ago I did the same thing. and did not realize I had it on the wrong way until I finished the model. things happen and you just have to live with it. Nicely done on a difficult model. Kudos.

Hi Frankie,
I understand, the aft point on the gaff should be much higher, the error was made when I cut the original fabric for the sail. At this point with it fully rigged and the mast set it would be difficult to correct, I'll have to live with it. Still being somewhat of a novice I appreciate your input and will remember the next time I do any sails.

jct got a reaction from dgbot in 18th Century Longboat by jct - FINISHED - Model Shipways - mod moved
Hello everyone,
Well she is finished! All the rigging was completed per the kit practicum, with the exception of adding a second flag halyard on the port side. Rope coils were added in the appropriate places and 4 or the supplied oars placed aboard. I'd originally intended to show two full sails and one either furled or stowed on-board some where, I abandoned that idea as the third sail really blocked a lot of the interior details I'd spent so much time on...So she's running with a main and stay sail and no jib, I think at some time in the history of these little vessels they would have sailed this way.
This was really an enjoyable little kit to build, alot of detail in a small package. Thanks to all that followed along and offered support along the way. Pics follow.

Hi Charlene,
Your planking a-midships looks good..nice spacing, just a suggestion if you don't mind, you may want to consider adding more reinforcement to the bow? It can really help when it comes time to plank on a bluff bow vessel by giveing more glue area where the plank bend is the most severe.

Uh oh! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I THINK you may have put the mainsail on backwards. I feel the part laced to the mast should be the part that is farthest aft and vice versa.
The tip off is that the peak of the sail, the uppermost aftermost corner on this sort of fore-and-aft sail is usually distinctly higher than the other upper corner.
It would be a shame to get that part wrong since the rest of the work on the model looks really good to me.

jct reacted to Jerry in HALF MOON By Jerry - FINISHED - Corel Scale - 1:50
Good morning, J and Glenn.
Thank you both for your visits. Yep, Today should be the final day on Half Moon except for the base (stand) which I'm thinking about. I think I'm going to make a timber pile cradle on a nice piece of wood of some kind; And I'm not sure if I'm going to place the boat in a display case. It has no sails and it's small enough that an occassional pressure dusting will probably be sufficient. I'm not sure yet. So now after a few months of a fun build a I need to come up with another model. Maybe it won't be an historical boat but perhgaps something from the close past. I'm anxious to vary the build to incorporate different skills to learn. I really don't know but I'm thinking about it. Of course I stil have to "coach" the admiral. Anyway, final pictures will be posted in a day or so. Take care everyone and best ..
Jerry
