Todays update...first here are the mast and spar numbers I promised, the original numbers came from a plate in The Search for Speed Under Sail  of a ship named FLY, she was captured by the British in 1812 for blockade running and renamed HM Schooner Sea Lark, I chose it because the overall deck layout looked very similar to Jumbo, and she was a schooner rig.

First thing I did was blow up the page so I could read it, then converted yards and inches to feet

once I had those numbers it was a matter of converting them to scale lengths and actual lengths

The above chart shows the results...seems she's still gonna have tall rigging, not as high as box stock but still up there...main mast total will be close to 18 inches

piddled around with some more small stuff...completed the rudder and oars for the ships boat, just some carving and sanding from plank stock
and started work on the forward companionway...sorry I didn't get pics from the very start, you'll see her below in putty and primer,  I built it up from card stock with a wood base for coaming, once the general shape was achieved a coat of glazing putty was applied to smooth it all out.  It will eventually be painted and trimmed out to match the deck house
Well thats all for today, thanks for the likes and comments

Thanks for all the likes and comments...I finally got around to rigging the mast stock together just to check it out and it is way too tall

you can see here the main would be about 28 inches tall, thats 142 foot in scale, if assembled per the kit dimensions and instructions, not gonna do that, like Denis I'm leaning toward a  topsail schooner, plenty of dowel stock in the kit to do that.  I'll have to do some research to get some mast dimensions that are more realistic then the instructions provide, plenty of info in Historic Model Ships, plus Search for Speed Under Sail has a ton of plans with dimensions one could clone.    Jumbo/Agilis has scaled out to 86.4 ft long and 24 ft at the beam.   I'll be sure to post my numbers once I have them.

I also found sometime finish the paint on the main hull

Well that's all for now, again thanks for the likes and comments, your attention is much appreciated

It's always been a feeling of wonderful mystery watching one of these get planked.... You see the process in miniature and can imagine the process in full scale....

One heck of an accomplishment, each and every hull built in this fashion.....

Morning all, todays update.   Got the stern completed the rub strakes installed and she is in primer, used automotive primer this time instead of acrylic, seems to dry harder and I don't think the topcoat will react with it, gonna switch gears here the underside still need a bit of work and I'm out of glazing putty, should be here Friday, That will allow me to finish below the waterline and prep it for paint.

In the meantime I'll work on all the other stuff, may start on the masts and yards, not sure yet pics follow

you can see where additional fill is needed in the next two pics

You mean it's more like watching grass grow? (A seasonal pass time here in the PNW) Both you and J are building interesting subjects and seem top be staying mostly neck and neck in your builds. They are both even starting to look a little ship like!

thanks John,  J,  and Kevin.........thanks to all who hit the like button    nothing noteworthy as of yet.

I wish I could plank a hull like some of the folks here.......but then again,  if the plywood I used was a bit more sandable,  the frame would have shaped better.

    hello Kevin...welcome aboard

I don't think it's you...I had the same trouble with the stern   resorted to various size and shaped stealers and putty   You can call one of um Jumbo II if you like?  Seriously, nice work

I haven't been idle this past week.........................I've made some progress on the planking.  it's a slow process........lay a couple planks and allow it to dry before adding more.   close second to watching paint dry

more has been done to the starboard side,  than the port side.   the stern again is going to be a bit of trouble......I'll have to fill in the deficit at the stem.

port side still needs to catch up......I'm tapering here as I did with the starboard side in an attempt to gt the line back in shape before the counter closes.

the closure is going 'herringbone' on me.   I did something a bit different on the port side,  cutting and trimming the plank so it would fit.   later I'll drill the hole for the rudder.  I've also been sanding as I went along.

as of tonight,  I am at this point.  for some reason,  the port side is not behaving like the starboard side did.  it leads me to believe that I either fared too much on that side,  or there are alignment issues with the bulkheads.  when I plank hull #2,  I will see if the extra measure I did to it makes any difference.   I don't have a name for her......I may end up calling her Agilis.

    Hello MSW friends,
Well here it is...the end of the HM, she is complete.   I want to thank all of you who have followed along and offer compliments and words of encouragement along the way.  She is by no means perfect but I'm happy with the finished product...though it is a departure form my original plan, as she sits I believe she represents a good little working ship that is weathered but not worn.

This build it full of highlights, the launch and crows nest, and low-lights...those darn gunports, and things I would have done differently in hindsight, through all of it I could always count on your support, which made it  truly enjoyable.

I'm not sure what my next build will be, I stocked a few kits and scored on some nice plans for a scratch build...so time will tell, you can be sure I'll start a log when the time comes.   As always thanks for your interest, Pics follow
    THX

Well not really considering your building two and working on your car and building airplanes all at the same time, sheess

Things do look a little better today in the bright sunshine 🌞 and after about two pounds of wood filler

So after sanding and sanding and then sanding some more I moved on to marking out for the faux timberheads...they spaced out a 33mm, one thing about this technique it allows you to space the timberheads evenly
    marked edge
before the timberheads were mounted I made and installed waterways, this is just split basswood glued on edge

from there the timberheads were mounted using pins and gel ca in predrilled holes

after all these set the wales were mounted

three runs up each side and they were complete, turned my attention to the stern and mounted the kit supplied stern part...this will serve as the foundation for the stern fashion pieces...once I make them

while waiting for glue to set I mounted the ladder in the fwd hatchway
and started building up the capstan

well that's it for today next will be the addition of the rub strakes...I  still have not decided if the hull bottom will be white stuff or copper plates, I liked the way the copper turned out on my Harriet Lane build...but I also remember what a pita it was...time will tell
Thanks for all the likes and the words of support
