BANYAN reacted to rwiederrich in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Harvey...From what I gather.she was resided only in clapboard to simulate her *building* appearance and to *clean her up* as it were. I will provide some more images for your pleasure.
I completely agree...in this state...at this point in her history..she would make a fascinating model. Something you just don't see everyday.
There are plenty of models of her during her original rig and some during the war of 1812 and even later...but none of her in her less attractive days as a receiving ship.
I'd love to know if you would consider building her...I'd love to follow that log.
There are lots of images and articles about her as a receiving ship on line. Good luck.

BANYAN reacted to dashi in HM Bark Endeavour by dashi - Caldercraft - scale 1:64 - 1768-71 - bashed kit
Thanks Pat
Bowsprit: Time to take a closer look at my rigging and make corrections according to contemporary sources.
Moved the collars and sprityard sling cleat as they were too close in toward the bow and placed them in order as best to my interpretation of Steel. The new positions give a straighter line on the fore top stay and fore stay and a little more space for the spritsail.
The size in Steels tables for the shroud hearts or dead eyes is 7 inch so 3mm which I think looks more to scale. So replaced the kit supplied 7mm hearts to 3mm deadeyes as there seem to be plenty spare in the kit and according to Steel both hearts or dead eyes can be used here.
Doubled the bobstays inline with Steel and contemporary Navy regs, and replaced the bobstay hearts to 5mm dble and sing blocks with the falls made fast to timber heads as can be seen in the pics. This is according Lever who states in The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor:
Boomkins: added 2 inch thimbles to the shrouds inline with Steel.
The brass forward of the slingcleat should be lead to protect the bowsprit from wear from the sprityard sling.
Cheers Dashi
PS. Forgot to mention at this scale to make thimbles I simply seize the cord around a rod of the size thimble I require and set it with ca glue and sometimes finish it with a little black paint.

Nice work Rob. Were the red handles just make them stand out or was that the acual colour (from research)?

Thanks Kortes Rob and Druxey for you kind comments. Bob yes I can see why you like that boat very nice lines indeed.
Druxey funny you should mention he eclipse 160 I have 2 of them plus an assortment of others. the upper right ones are the 160 one hac been slightlu modified to fit the third hand.
Just to be clear none of these worked the way I needed them to work for me.
I decided that using the very fine watchmakers file and burnisher is the best way to round the heads.
The first two pictures taken with the old camera which I still prefer the way it operates and focuses, it get closer than the new camera.
Trying to get a professional looking picture with amateurish practices and lighting 😉
Of course cleaning the burs off the holes in the vent would help. I am pleased with how the screw are turning out though. only 44 to go.

Personally, I think a 1/96 model of the Constitution as a receiving ship would be an awesome project....I'm considering it.
I did the derelict Ferreira(AKA Cutty Sark). What a conversation piece.
Few people realize that the Constitution served in other capacities.

Pat...I revisited your log and I have to say I copied an image(Lat year) of your build when you just added the figurehead,,,,but failed to comment since.
You are creating very impressive work...fine, clean and accurate. Very impressive for sure.
I fully enjoyed my revisit......Love your work. Love the subject too.

The aft funnel originally has two white bands added for identification, they were painted over as the war began but left in place. I replicated this with tape.
The aft funnel was painted red when away away from the shore to identify her in the battle line then repainted grey when it came back to port. I’m going to leave it red because I can. I’ve added a platform not mentioned anywhere but the original photos and I’ll add a small brass steam whistle.

BANYAN got a reaction from Rudolf in HMCSS Victoria 1855 by BANYAN - 1:72
Hi folks a small update. These only stand 11mm tall and the thicker looking handles only 0.8mm - may change the handles as they look a little too thick but were supposed to be more substantial for two men to operate it. The downton pumps are assembled with one dry fitted to the base/plinth n which it will stand on deck. The next thing is to clean them up a bit and a final coat of white.
Wishing all a very merry and safe festive season
cheers

BANYAN got a reaction from dashi in HMB Endeavour by DaveRow - FINISHED - Corel - Scale 1:60 - First Build Kit
May be slow progress Dave, but she is looking great. Those rope ends look all nice and ship-shape!
I made life a little easier with my display base by using two thinner pieces of wood with the first (lower) being the larger (overall) size, then placing a second cut to the inner dimensions of the acrylic on top. No need for slots etc
cheers
