  1. Any reason not to use this stuff? I've got a bottle of it kicking around that isn't being used elsewhere.
  2. Just to be clear here, I'm not trying to be picky. So much of the info we have is old English and I'm trying to develop an understanding of the language. The meanings attached to their words are at the edges of the definitions that we use now so when you read words like "conversion" and "disposing" you have to stretch our understanding of the words a bit.
  3. Maybe it was supposed to say English Oak. I'm starting to wonder if this was part of the shortage of English Oak. Much like Wefalck says, were they tapering the ends of the planks to make use of the heartwood at the tops of the trees. I was originally thinking that this top and butt pattern was for strength purposes but I couldn't see how it made anything stronger. If they were doing it to conserve wood it starts to make sense. Thanks guys
  4. I think I understand what top and butt is, but could someone explain Steel's definition of top and butt. From "Element etc.' "A method of working English plank so as to make good conversion. As the plank runs very narrow at the top clear of sap, this is done by disposing the top end of every plank within six feet of the butt end of the plank above or below it, letting every plank work, as broad as it will hold clear of sap, by which method only can every other seam produce a fair edge." What does the planks nationality have to do with it? Clear of sap? After that I can't even think of questions. Strange language English🙂
  5. Coffee filter works great for gathering dust, thanks Mark
  6. I put 1/16" of camber in the 7" deck beams of the Discovery. I guess I should also put a little camber in the deck hook and the ledges. Is it common practice to cut the ledges straight and leave the joints a touch proud and let the sandpaper take care on the crown? After all we're talking about a few thousands if an inch of camber in a 2" ledge.
  7. I'll try that. I had thought of it but dismissed it because I figured the sandpaper would clog right up and be useless.
  8. Thanks Mark. Do you use the same species of wood as what you are trying to fill. Like Oak dust for Oak planking. I've had it dry darker at times.
  9. I've been wondering about that huge breasthook since you posted this. Would it be to strengthen the bow for a swivel gun or something?
  10. Thank you Tom, that's very kind. I'm actually quite pleased with how it turned out but it looked so much better when freshly sanded. This is the first planking I've done for 15 years or so and this was on the inside. I can't do the martini, I've been dry for 30+ years. I could smoke some dope though, it's legal here😃 This is the worst spot with a couple of boo boo's. Is there any advantage of PVA and dust over store bought wood filler. When I make my own filler it always seems to have wood threads in it. I guess I could screen the sawdust. Any recipes for filler?
  11. I'm doing some ceiling planking that will never be seen. It has some very minor cracks between the planks from poor fitting. As I'm sanding the dust fills the cracks and it looks great. Is there something I can apply to keep that look or am I better off to blow it all out and mix up some PVA and dust and push it into the cracks? I'm thinking this planking on the inside is good practice for when I get serious(and it can be seen).
  12. Just about finished the ceiling planking. Made the shot locker while the glue was drying. Had to do my first drop plank. You can just make it out in the bottom left(starboard bow).
  13. Silly question but have you tried soaking it in in water?
  14. I have "Elements" on my desktop. It's waiting in line while I read other stuff. So Harris cut is like a short scarf and cyphered is shiplap?
  15. I didn't like the way the deck clamp lapped over the strakes so I peeled the strakes back about 6" and repositioned them. Starboard side went well but I've had to replace one plank so far on the port side. Picture shows the starboard side done. Now I'm probably going to have to put a drop plank in the footwaling.
  16. I'm working on a shot locker and they used those terms in "Scantlings". I'm thinking cyphered was tongue and groove or shiplap but I'm stumped
  17. Cyphered planks Harris cut Thanks
  18. Lieste-I found more info on another drawing. Discovery1789 plans - Discussions for Ships plans and Project Research. General research on specific vessels and ship types.. - Model Ship World™ It looks like it has 16 beams on the lower deck and 18 on the upper deck. about one beam every 5 feet or so.
  19. OK I was looking at the bomb conversion drawing and could just make out a beam or two. I cranked up the contrast and printed out a better version. I can see quite a few beams. Do these drawings trump "Scantlings"? I would think yes but what do I know? Found another drawing that has more and it looks like they compliment each other. I guess there is more on these old faded thing than you think🙂
  20. Are deck beams evenly spaced or do they shift a bit for masts and hatches. The only info I can find in "Scantlings" is the gun deck has 21 beams and the other deck has 14. Nothing about spacing.
  21. A few problems arise. "Scantlings" doesn't list a "lower deck". All I can find in "Scantlings" (that apply) are gun, middle. upper and lower. All I can find with info for Sloop's of War are upper and gun. Any others are blank. So I have two decks. The top one(upper?) is the weather deck and has the guns on it. The next one down should be the lower deck(as Druxey said) but "Scantlings" doesn't have any info for lower deck. I'm thinking the only thing to do is use the "Gun deck" info for the top/weather/gun deck and use the "upper deck" info for the lower deck. Does that sound reasonable? The gun deck lists 21 beams and the upper deck lists 14 beams.
  22. Made the breast and deck hooks and mast steps. Tried bending the deck clamps with just wet wood. Soaked them for 20 min or so and clamped them in place. Left them overnight with a fan blowing on them. Worked great. They never moved when I unclamped them.
  23. This is John McKay's version of the Discovery. I know the quarterdeck and forecastle. I can't figure out what the ones I've got colored arrows pointing at are. As near as I can figure there is no orlop. Is the upper deck also the gun deck in this case? Is the yellow arrow even a deck? I'm trying to look up scantlings and don't know which deck I'm looking at.
  24. Here's one but I don't think the source is as authentic as you're looking for. The deck hook is not on planking. Figure G-13. Bow construction: (a) top view of port frames; (b) deck... | Oxford Handbooks Online
