    The driver's seat :

The engine has a few details, most of which are completely hidden once it's fitted :

I found out a bit too late that I'd fitted the engine a bit too far toward the rear. There were no pics or diagrams anywhere in the instructions as to where it should have fitted . It SHOULD have been hard against the firewall. I had a fair bit of modification to do to the radiator later on to get it to fit :

The radiator and fans. The centres of the fan spindles took a bit of work :

No parts were supplied in the kit for these two exhaust pipes, so I made them from PVC tubing, heated with a hot air gun to get the bends. It took a few goes to get two pieces which looked the same and actually fitted :

    My progress to date :

Hello Dan!My names David From Scotland  G'Day!.. and new to the card Shipbuilding!..I have just Bought the GPM 1/200 Bismarck  and I'm looking forward to building it... just one wee request though  I take it all the parts are included and all I need to supply are the tools and glue to start! I have built card models before, architecture and railway buildings and card glue (that ok for these ships?)  so there is a bit of card building experience to fall back on  I have built the plastic 1/350 Bismarck kits  so I know the shape and lines of the ship.

Your pics of this ship are brilliant and are there any more?  as you are a man of vast experience in these matters.

Hello, David. Be aware that Danny added a significant amount of after-market photo-etched (PE) detail parts to his model. This is really quite an advanced-level model by itself, and working with PE is another tricky skill to acquire. I think you would be doing yourself a huge favor by postponing your Bismarck build for a few weeks and having a crack at the card modeling tutorial we have posted here, based on a free downloadable model of the German V108 torpedo boat. It's a good way to get some card skills under your belt before tackling what is a very demanding project.

    Kind regards,
    Chris

    Thank you John and Carl.

All the portholes and steps are fitted. The closest set of steps are about to be painted :

There's another Boom near the bow :

The main entry ladders are made from PE. I scratchbuilt the platforms :

It's now time to fit the screws and rudders which I made 5 months ago :

The final things to fit are the two flags, as I usually do. It signals the end of the build . I de-laminated the paper to make it look a bit more realistic, and glued the pieces back-to-back :

I only need to glue the model to the base, which I made a while ago. It's just been given it's final coat of lacquer (I'd forgotten to do that earlier ). The final pictures will be posted a bit later today.

I've fitted the one boat that sits on the davits. I used 0.2mm wire to simulate the lowering cable, and some 0.4mm wire for the support bracket that holds it to the middle of the davit :

All the railings are finally completed, apart from a bit of touch-up paint for the port side ones :

Because I was two lengths of railing short I've had to use a some that was left over from Amatsukaze. Unfortunately it's only a 2-bar rail, but I managed to have enough 3-bar to get to the aft cleats so I did a bit of a "fudge". Unless you look carefully it's not really noticeable, and it'll do me :

There's actually still quite a bit to do to finish this model, things I'd forgotten about. I'd left off fitting the portholes and steps to the hull in case they were damaged any time I had to move the model (which was a lot ). I've made a start to the steps - there are about 70 of them to fit. I'm using 0.2mm nickel-silver wire for them :

Yes, I've noticed the bit of grey touch-up paint needed near the bottom . It's not the only bit either.

The four anchors are fitted. I used 15 link-per-inch chain for the main ones, and 40 lpi for the auxilliary chain on the foremost one. The rather poor quality printing really stands out in the different red colours, and that panel didn't line up properly either . More touch-up will be needed :

I've also made the fore and aft flagpoles from 1.0mm and 0.6mm brass wire :

Now i'm onto the railing for the main deck. This should take me a couple of days - there's over 2.5 metres of it .

Yep, yellowy coloured Cardboard for the frames - 1mm thick.

Jan, I got a nice surprise when I had a look at the laser-cut sheets. There are additional strips already the right shape to be glued to the edges of the waterline "deck" to which the upper and lower skins are glued together (just like the ones I advised you to make ). I'll be gluing extra card to both sides of each bulkhead as well, and also adding longitudinal stringers between the bulkheads. This time I won't be gluing the skins to the stringers though - I think some of the skins on Amatsukaze were pulled in by the glue. They'll just be there to avoid any accidental crushing of the skins.

I needed to roll 28 small tubes, I'm not sure if they are supposed to be bolts, pins or whatever. The parts supplied in the kit were obviously wrong - the tubes are supposed to be 1.5mm diameter x 2.0mm long, but the kit parts were only 2.0mm square whereas a bit of very simple math comes up with a part that is 2.0mm x 4.8mm. I cut new parts from some left-over hull skin from Bismarck. The tubes were rolled around a 1.2mm drill bit :

Fitting the interior skin looked like it may have a problem with alignment. I'm not going to second-guess it, I've made that mistake before, so I've glued it up by aligning a couple of areas where I knew it was right. The pics below show where it looks like the skin falls way short or overlaps - most likely it's actually OK :

The Torsion Bar suspension comes next. I could have rolled paper tubes for the bars themselves, but the kit didn't supply any parts for these. Instead they had a template which I would have had to cut from plain paper and paint, or they suggested I could use wire. I chose PVC tubing, which was the right diameter and painted them to match the floor :

Some of the side bracing. Once again I used my punch kit to make the holes :
