Anchor line size
Dave_E replied to Dave_E's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Hi B.E. THANK YOU for the reference. I used the beam of the LN, did all the math and came up with a scale rope of 1.325mm. Now I'm on the hunt to get something close to that. Loved studying your build of Alert for the past hour and a half. 👍 😀 -
Hi All, I have a collection of scale rope and seizing thread started and I'm a beginner. Im sure some of you must have vast amounts of rope and thread in your yards. I have 3 "bobbins" (long 4" red plastic tubes) from Amati along with 2 diameters of scale rope in a sealed bag (also Amati), 5 or 6 different diameters of rope from Model Shipways wound onto plastic "kite string" looking things and 2 diameters of rope from Syren in small zip lock bags plus 4 bobbins of various color 6/0 and 8/0 line for making seizings. How do you keep it all organized? Pictures of your "rope" area?

Welcome aboard! What name do you go by? You've got quite the 1st time project there! 😀

I have to agree with Mark… we’ll be long off the earth and our efforts in the hobby will last 2-3 generations (if they’re not destroyed by any number of reasons). However, your research was good knowledge and I’m pretty sure you enjoyed the trip. 👍😀

Jets look GREAT! But you need to put the corrosion control team on report…. They painted BF-1’s nose wheel and tire gray. 😆 For those not familiar… in the Navy and Corps Aviation, the “corrosion control” shop does all the corrosion protection and painting of the aircraft while at sea and at home. The harsh salt air and water environment means constant cleaning, inspection, and refinishing of areas that might be affected by even the smallest hint of corrosion. REALLY nice Alan. There are many a Marine Corps Squadron that would proudly display this in the “ready room”, especially the test squadron. Most excellent work! 👍😀

Good hypothesis. Can’t say that I wouldn’t have put it together just as you did. Now I’d make this a 2 day build, waiting for sections to completely dry before moving on. Maybe? I’ll be over for dinner. 😁

How did it warp? I concur… you can see it from any angle and I’m going out on limb here, but the quality control guy that is building this masterpiece will not let this stand. 😄 Let us know how the take apart goes and if you find the smoking gun.

Hi All, The Lady Nelson did not even show rigging for the anchor, just the anchor tied up along the hull. I wish to rig the anchor true to scale and authenticity. I have not been able to find any formula or standard for what anchor line diameter was for various ships of the age. I did find out through reading that the Uss Constitution had anchor line that was 22" in diameter? Any knowledge of what an English Cutter's anchor line diameter may have been or the formula to get it?

How many kits do you have on the go at the moment?
Dave_E replied to CaptnBirdseye's topic in Wood ship model kits
I bet I speak for many when I say I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing the Indefatigable come to life! I predict that will be a best seller. 👍😀 -
Hi Cat… Yes I know of them and have looked them over. Being a Canadian company will never have any affect on whether I shop there or not! 😀

The GSE gear (tow tractors and cranes) look fantastic. Wasn’t sure about your choice of color for the jets. They are Marines and I thought I saw a picture on your thread that shows they are Marine aviation grey.

Welcome aboard Alex, nice to have you. Good group of folks to help you along… don’t be shy. 😀

Hi Starlight, Lyle, Keith, There is so much I've learned in the past 2 days on just mounting and rigging of ships cannons. I wished I'd have known what I know now last week. I'd have drilled the holes for the eyelets for the breeching lines, but would NOT have glued them in. I am considering taking them out and making a jig for the cannon rope works like Olha Batchvarov shows in her You Tube channel. Sure looks easier than trying to tie them up along the bulwarks! Thank you for the references regarding cannon size, etc., invaluable. Things like I have the eyelets WAY high on the sides of the gun ports. But I just did what I saw on the drawings. This is the first, and I know being a ficticious ship with poor drawings and scale attention from the kit manufacturer have made me take notes and I have good notes for things that I will make sure are correct on my next build, the Rattlesnake. (did I say that outloud)? This build is mostly about learning the techniques etc.. 😊

Hi All, I was going to start rigging the cannons to the deck and I thought I'd better ask. 1:64 scale... what diamter for the big cannon recoil rope? Also, the Amati kit does not address rigging of cannons in anyway, so I don't want to use up line that must be used elsewhere. Same question for all the anchor rope. 😐

Hi Jim, welcome aboard. Navy man here also. Lots of sea-going nautical jargon as well (what else). You’ve come to the right place for all your novice building advice and help (me too). Don’t be shy asking questions! 👍😀
-
Thanks Guys - ordering today. 👍😀 I’ll practice with some sewing thread. I’m a real sailor and have whipped and seized many a line in real life. Doing it on a 1:64 scale rope… that could be something entirely different. 😆
-
Just found a “thread” (excuse the pun) from David Lester. The good Admiral is going to show me her sewing thread collection and I’ll confiscate a role for each color rope I have in the Amati kit. 😁

You know Keith, I think so. Familiarity of the tools and having the correct tools plus the "how to" help from the forum has defintey helped with the confidence and technique. I am fortunate to be freshly retired and can sit and build as much as I want and I think the deep emersion into the hobby has helped tremendously. And that includes hours of research and chat time here on MSW! 😀

Hi All, Into a new phase of building (even if it is for the cannons). Amati supplied the Lady Nelson with 1mm, .75mm, .5mm, .10mm and .25mm ropes. As I look at the drawings, these are all for different rigging on the ship. The drawings show seizing and whipping but do not address how it got there. So here is the dumb question for the day: what size of thread do I use for all the whipping etc. on a 1:64 scale ship? What are your recommendations?
