  1. Welcome to the forum! Beautiful way to get into the hobby. As mentioned, please do start a build log so we can follow your progress (and you can get lots of help as needed/requested). 👍😀
  2. Thanks Glenn, I’ve had your LN on speed dial for some time and appreciate all the tips you’ve given me over the course of the build. 👍😊
  3. Good Morning Guys, Thank you both for the input. I’m thinking another book might be in order. I love the references available on the build logs, however it’s a chore to bookmark a page I think will be of great help or to print many pages and have available for references and of course the old memory “where did I see that”. Absolutely concur, once you understand what a line or piece of rigging does and how it works, it helps us with the how, and maybe when to get it installed.
  4. Hey Keith, If your referring to rigging on the plan sheets, yes I do. I just spent 2 hours studying the kit plans, the rigging book I mentioned above and one of our good members completed LN build. The Admiral came down to check on me because it was to quiet. 😆 I’ll start with the standing rigging I recon.
  5. Hi All, Another serious noob question. Here I am at the rigging phase of construction. What do I do first?😊
  6. Hi Thomas, welcome to the MSW forum, your one stop shopping for all matters concerning wooden ship building (plastic too) and ship knowledge. Glad to have you aboard! 😀
  7. Thank you all for following and helping with the knowledge and techniques of the hobby. Yes, the breeching lines of the cannons should have gone through eyes on the carriage. I do not have a hobby drill press and decided to forgo any cannon carriage detail with this first build as I did not have the ability to drill the metal carriages supplied by Amati. Next build will have wooden carriages that will accept a pin drill and can mount any number of eyes. Thanks for the picture Allan, I’ve set that aside for the next build as a reference. 😀
  8. Monumental day in the shipyard! Never thought about the waterline and mounting, just painted it per drawing. 😐 It's OK. 🙂 e
  9. Thanks for the tip Glenn. I just ordered pins and eyelets and hooks… never can have too much stuff. Right? 😁
  10. Hey Paul, I'm really going into uncharted territory now. Haven't done any rigging (except the cannons) since I built a few plastic sailing ships 43 years ago. 😳 I'm kind of nervous about doing anything right now. Mount and call it good? I'M KIDDING. 😆 Every step is an adventure. I did see something I forgot. I installed the belaying pin board, rack, structure?
  11. Good Afternoon Everyone, Couple of photos on “Dave’s method for cannon rigging”. This Dave borrowed the idea from another Dave. 👍Thanks Dave. Then… I’d like opinions from those of you who have built the LN or any of the period cutters out there. Do I mount it now, or rig the anchors now? Get the rudder and tiller on? Does the tiller get in the way of rigging?
  12. Greetings Mateusz, welcome to the forum! 👍😀
  13. I made such a mess in the shop, I don't know whether to continue and make all the spars and bow sprit or clean up and do it later. The sanding really makes a mess. 😐
  14. Greetings! What do I call you? Good place to be for learning and doing anything wooden ship building! 👍😊
  15. Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you join us! 👍😀
  16. Hi All, Spent the last 3 days learning how to use a drill motor “lathe”. 😀 First picture are the 4 masts I turned. Left to right… 2 poplar dowels, 2nd one stained (did not like that at all), 3rd one was oak. The oak chipped something awful so I had to fill it and then stained it just to see what it looked like. Didn’t like that one either. It was close enough to keep, however there were just to many eye distractions to keep it. The 4th try with the kit supplied walnut went smooth and turned out very good. I’m going to go with it for this first build… later on there’s that old “scale/exact” thing coming. Don’t think masts were made of walnut… and it’s hard to make walnut look like anything other than walnut unless you paint it.
  17. Hi Arthur! Welcome! Don’t be shy asking questions as you proceed with your build. Start a build log for sure and we can go along with you. 👍😀
  18. Hi All, I need to get a few 1:64 scale sailors for the boat to help me “visualize” the build a little better (if that makes sense). Not interested at this point to do any figure painting. Those of you who have dabbled, what is your source for scale sailors? Thanks
  19. Welcome to the forum KJ. THE place to hang out for anything model wooden ship. 👍😀
  20. Hi John, Welcome. Go to the new members page and introduce yourself. 👍😀
  21. Hey Doc, What's your supply depot for the oak dowels?
  22. Good Morning MSW, 1st attempt with a dowel from the hobby store. Mixed emotions for sure. As hard as this process seems to be, I’m surprised I haven’t read more about the tedious task of mast and spar making. I took my time using mostly 60g paper. Found out that when I put the drill motor in the high speed position with a full trigger pull (am aware of the breakage possibility), material comes off faster. I even tried using a wood carving tool (didn’t really work). What did work… (pretty well actually) was using my dremil while the drill motor is running. Saw that technique from a guy on YouTube. Got all the way to the top and that’s where things stopped. That entire top needs to be taken from 8mm to 6mm. No idea how to make that happen without a lathe kind of setup. Maybe use a longer piece to start with, then cut off the excess? I used a clamp to keep the drill trigger pulled, my left hand to hold the dowel fairly steady and my right hand to use the sandpaper or dremil. This was totally an experimental learning process. Sure made a mess. How the walnut dowels will perform compared to this I don’t know. Has anyone ever turn 2 pieces of a mast you thought would break and pinned/glued them together? Just thought I’d share.
