Starting to get the cannons rigged.

Things went better for me this evening, I was able to get the cat falls rigged. Guess I was just worn out last night and that’s why nothing was working out.

Good grief. Ever have one of those nights where nothing goes right at all? I couldn’t even lash a block correctly tonight, the knot just kept tangling, twisting and coming out all wrong... I had to walk away.

Alright, I was able to get the second anchor rigged up tonight and installed the stern lanterns that I’ve been working with on the side. Tomorrow I’ll see about getting those catheads rigged.

Well, I went ahead and changed out one of the anchors. Serving the brass ring took a while to do so the other anchor will have to wait for tomorrow night. I think it looks better than the little kit anchors I had on there before.

Coming along nicely, I’m liking the white. Well, it looks like I’m going to have to invest in some of those sliding clamps you’ve been using. I just showed your update to my GF and she’s pretty much sold on this model. Between us, I think it’s partially because I lived in Florida where she would come visit me all the time from France, before I made the move over here. I think she has the South wedged into her heart and that’s why this model catches her eye so.

Hi all, I need some help. Does this anchor look out of scale (excuse the tape)? The kit is 1:50 and the anchor is 1:64. Looks big to me but then again I looked at some photos of the Victory and her anchors are huge.

Been working on the masts. I went ahead and built my own mastheads to make it look a little better than just a dowel; not totally done yet, still have a few parts to add. The “iron bands” on the masthead are thick cardstock paper which I also used to back the wood battens. Had to do that because the battens kept snapping when I was trying to file-in the slots for the bands. It was easier to cut the slots out of the paper backing.

You take me back. Just take your time and enjoy the build. I started with the AL Bounty jolly boat when my girlfriend said she wanted, “one of those really nice wooden ships” for the house. I wasn’t happy with what I found online for sale and my searches led me here, where the models looked sooooooo good. So, I told her to let me try building a little one just to see if I could do it, then, if it actually turned out looking like a boat, she could pick out the kit she wanted and I’d build it for her. All went well with the jolly boat because everyone here helped me get along, and I’m still learning from them all today. As for my girlfriend, well, she chose her ship which is now proudly displayed in our office. On my third build now with 4 kits waiting, so I guess I’m enjoying it. You’re going to come out of this a way more knowledgeable builder, trust me. Et voila, here she is! I look at her all the time to remind myself how far I’ve come along. Sooooo many mistakes, but she was my first build when I knew absolutely nothing. And I’m still proud of her. 😉

Looking for some information concerning mast battens. I assume these were notched where the iron bands were, or did they lie on top of the bands? None of the images I’ve seen are very clear.

Thanks for your reply, Bob. Concerning the case, I totally agree with what you said. My father-in-law found a glass place not far from the farmhouse here so I’m going to go pay them a visit and see what they’re capable of. Might be a cheaper option for me. Going to start looking into a table saw too, everything keeps coming back to that machine.

Thanks for the link, but it’s the insane French import taxes that kill the deal for me. Recently, I had to pay a 35 euro import fee on a 25 dollar telescope part. No joke.

Doesn’t that give you cotton mouth? Ba-dump-bump... And here I was afraid that the little lick I gave the railing would have some adverse affect.

Been searching around and haven’t really found an answer to my situation. I took my Enterprise down for its routine dusting and noticed that the dust on the wood decks and railings was more like a dirt film than just dust. Normally I use makeup brushes to dust the model since they are ultra soft, but they weren’t taking it up. I licked the tip of my finger and rubbed a small end of the railing which removed the dirt and brought out the wood. So it’s time to act before it builds into something nastier. So my question would be, can I clean the wood with water and Q-tips? Is wiping the model down with water (distilled) a good idea; is it bad to add so much humidity? Is there another method I should consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I know that I need a display case, but it’s not in the budget right now. Those things plus shipping are crazy expensive and I also don’t have the equipment to cut plexiglass precisely or mill the wood base myself. A circular saw doesn’t make the best long, straight cuts, there’s always deviation somewhere.

The second planking is pretty straight forward; just follow the first planking. If the first planking is sanded down nice and smooth, the second planks should glue over the top of them fairly easily.

A knot in memory of my step-father. He loved tying these things when we loaded the truck with alfalfa bales for the winter. I think only a trained eye would catch it. Just my little easter egg.

Just some quick photos of where I’m at with my Bounty build. I’ve oiled the hull and started on some of the ground tackle. I apologize for the cluttered workspace. I’m confined to a 4’x2’ bench in a jail cell sized room in the corner of the basement. Wish I had something like the workrooms I’ve seen in some of the other build logs here.

Maybe a little better knot. The one above looks like it got a little twisty when I cinched it down.

Is this correct, or would the lashing not be there? Also, what is the correct way to tie off this line to that cleat? I’m not certain of the knot to be used.
