  1. I never understood woman ... In Serbia university, there is (for me) strange habit ... Similar as on the end of high school and famous "Prom" When students pass all lectures on last year of study, and when only exams left, they get status so called "apsolvent", which allow them to have exams every month, and ... most important (?!?!?) they can make their "apsolvent`s evening/party" similar as " Prom party" in high school And now, Princess get this status and we all are in her "apsolvent`s evening/party" maddnes ... More than two months I have listened Her and Admiral talking talking talking talking talking about ... dress she will wore, shoes she will wore, her haircut, .... and after that endless windows shopping ..... and endless shopping .... and after that .... endless everyday trying dress, shoes, accessories, .... all this for couple of hours lasting party ????? And dress she will never wore again ???? No, I can not understand this and never will .... So, yesterday I was walking in downtown following my job, and accidentally my eyes stopped in one little shop window with man hats ... this is what catch my attention For "window" purpose I came in to ask where I can by this stuff, but I got for free full hand ... In the evening I compare this stuff (rivets ?) with C-plans , and .... THEY ARE TOO BIG !!!! Maybe they will be usable for mooring pipes ? Hmm, to big too If I do not find a way to "small" them, I must find smaller
  2. Mark I found something, and make some experiments, and it seems ok. See next post . Steel wool can not be used on this kind of material - in structure, this is very very very thin plastic (?) foil with selfadhesive layer on one side, and more thinner color layer on other. I think this is all about 0,1 mm thick, but it really seems as metal foil. In Belgrade, even on internet, I just could not found real metal foil 0,1-0,2 mm in desired shade of color Hello Bob, I am glad you are back to saddle and hope to see your progress on CS soon. If I found real cooper foil, I could not worry about weathering. There are so much weathering techniques on MSW and around, amog them dirty fingers, and there is also Oxigen in air which cooper likes very much . But I cheat a bit, and intend to use this paper/plastic foil which color is almost the same as on Her Majesty in Greenwich
  3. I ll follow your build with great interest Still a lot of work in front of you, but CS is one of the nicest thing that appears on sea Go on Nenad
  4. Still looking for solution to mufle excess of shine to match to look of Muntz metal as in Greenwich
  5. Building Cutty sark, I "run" in "problem" with colour of "coopering" Coopering plates you can bye are, for my taste and vision, so much colored to look as they are from cooper As it is known, on CS presented in Greenwich, She is "coopered" with so called Muntz metal, which has different color than cooper Definitely , this is not cooper color So I spent a lot of time to find foil with, as much as it can be, simillar color to muntz, and finaly find something. On picture is test piece Color is almost adequate, but, it is too much shiney, in comparation with muntz plates on CS Any idea how to "kill" or mufle excess of shine to the right level of shine as on pictures? Nenad PS - forget to sayy: I can not find metal foil of adequate color and thicknesss. This what you can see on test piece is self-adhesive paper foil, this is not metal foil
  6. Nice working progress today. Make a coffee, take cigarettes, and move down with will and inpatience First I make rudder, and fit it to the shape and dimensions, carefully considering position of rudder axis It was pretty easy Then starts tricky job - drilling and positioning of hole in stern. After a while, success, but I realized that I must correct: a) angle of stern post width of stern post c) shape of curve on a stern post to be equiall as on rudder Sanding, "dremelling" , sanding, and rudder fits on its place, with enough space between rudder and stern post for hinge and fittings Next I realized, is that I have to correct end of a keel Follow "deep" surgery, but it was not hard as earlier And I am satisfied - profile view is exactly I wanted to get, and pretty similar as on plans-pictures And after that, waiting for glue to dry, I did some coopering tests, on testing piece of rudder I made couple of days before Hmmmmmm ( again) In this testing "cooper strips" are 5x10 mm. It seems that it has to be little more narrow - 4mm, and it means - for 1/5 of their number more ... Next tests are in line to be done, this is TOO MUCH SHINEY
  7. I am not discouraged in any way, because somewhere form beginning until now, in my mind main strategy of building this model settled : details as on C-plans and photos, main look of model - as She look today with add of weathering. I realized that if go on accurate historic way - there is question without right answer - how exactly she look at 1902. or 1947. or 1895, or in day when Campbell made his drawings ... or ... There is no absolute correct answer, and some pieces and details must be left to imagination. All this investigation is very interrsting and fun to me, and I hope for you. Analyzing pictures and plans I learn an understand some issues, and ideas comes in a crowd how to make/resolve something. Very enjoyable for me to look and compare, to conclude (right or wrong) and to burn fire of impatience to go to shipyard as soon it is possible I just recorded some interesting points intended to other inexperienced modelers who will be crazy or brave enough to build CS, and who will pay attention to details Thx for support anyway. I was intend to make rudder tonight, but ... life ... very good friend come to drink a beer and to consult about his family and legal things, then Hothedad insisted to fix his broken office chair which inherit from me (kinked bolt in a nut = two hours of "gymnastic"), and as I turn around myself, time is 22:30h, and this is time for book and bed
  8. And accidentally found pictures, as a contribution to the earlier discussion about number of windows on broadside of Her In C-plans, there are not side windows except four on front part bellow fore deck In earlier pictures, there are here !!!! In today statement, there are not Hmmmm again
  9. And another observation Edge of coopering on rudder is different on old and on new pictures Also, position of depth marker "XX" is different on old and new pictures Hmmmm and on C-plans And also, there is a slight difference in upper "belt" on which rudder chains have to be connected
  10. Question to discuss here Fixed or movable rudder ? Movable is more adequate, but can more easily be damaged than fixed. Just thinking forward What are your experiences and opinion ?
  11. Thx for interesting David, life must go on, and things slowly begin to settle on their places. There will be consequences, it will last, but we survived hyperinflation, civil war and NATO bombing ... what is one big flood for us ? Just kiddin. Obrenovac is still dead town... tertible stories rise from ... poor people My family and friends are safe and nobody have serious problems with Thx again
  12. Denis Storry of my life. If there is in front of me any type of, so called "elephant track/path" ( elephants in their life space walk almost always on same path which is solid beaten, and you can not miss it), I must discover/invent hot water again, after that hole in a flowerpot, or wheel, and find something new, even to walk on arms instead on legs ... Original kit was made by wide unknown Croatian company called TEHNODIDAKTA somewhere in 1960-1970 year, and that kits were known only by few ship builder lovers from former Yugoslavia. Former Yugoslavia had no great naval tradition, and ship modeling was not spread as hobby. As I know, somewhere before civilian war, TEHNODIDAKTA who still exist, left kit manufacturing, and it is really accidentally if somebody (as me) saved kit or blueprints from kit until today ( there were no instructions except about colours in few words). Earlier in my log, during I was making ( or trying to make it) by the kit blueprints , you can see many simplifications and inaccuracy in those blueprints which leaded me to a few of deep surgeries I have made, so I complete gave up making Her by those blueprints when find C-plans, and Sergal, Mantua Artesania ... etc etc instructions on NET, and from time to time I mentioned TEHNODIDAKTA in log only as a comparative Considering in mind that hull of Her majesty was made by this kit shits ( bulkheads) I do not dare to compare my hull lines I have got by TEHNODIDAKTA ribs and hull lines in C-plans ... afraid of disappointment ... That was a reason that before second layer of planking, I work with maybe too much putty and sanding, because I believe in my eyes and lines of hull I saw on photos, and I was trying to catch exactly that lines. I am sure That I could not ping lines from C-plans, but I think that I have got visually "bingo", and Hull really on first sight looks like hull of Cutty Sark. Ok, maybe little correction here and there (as on stern post for instance), and in this circumstances inevitable artistic approach on whole model. Definitive decision about is some piece on place and is it look how has to be is always followed with close and distance look at whole model, two or three "Hmmm" and if it matches to my ideas, that is OK, and that piece is finished. ( until ...) But I must admit, that whole this fun is really enjoyment for me, and challenge to resolve particular places on model, also testing of my possibilities And that is point, isnt it ?
  13. Popeye, interesting is that rudder from earlier pictures slightly is different than rudder in fresh pictures after final restoration. Maybe at the first time when She was settled in dry dock, She still kept old working rudder, and after fire, maybe naval architects think about aesthetic dimension of rudder look. Who knows, but things are like they are. In C-plans ( or I am blind) I didnt find crossection of rudder in any level Thank you Dave, I am glad that somebody find this novel interesting and usefull, even with all my mess To continue with rudder consideration At first, having in mind "sqared" and "roundend" profile, all thing must be made of harder/stronger wood (not from linen wood I made first). Never mind, in any case whole rudder will be covered with coopering and black paint. So I dive into original kit box, and find two 35 years old adequate pieces made of beech, which will be just fine. One rounded, another squared. Have no idea about that pieces - what was their purpose Next step is to glue them together, with intend to process them tomorrow with "dremell thing" to proper shape and dimesnions. Maybe I ll add some strenghtening, I ll see tomorow In this way, question of vertical axis position seem to be resolved, and it will not be hard to remove excess of material to the square profile, also to round square profile at the top. If there appear some lack of thickness, there is always planking to help. Ah, yes, there is a hole in stern to be drilled, and a little "ring" mask at entrance of rudder BTW, digging in old kit box, I find original offered rudder bonds ... 4 mm wide ?!?!?!? To much wide. According to C-plans, in my scale they have to be max 2mm wide, rater 1,5 mm
  14. Further analyzing C-plans ... and Lou`s material Rudder axis passing through the axis of the hinges And as picture said - rudder carrier has a square cross-section but on picture Lou published - cross section is rounded ( inside ?)
  15. When little mouse or little lizard come in house, Admiral literary jump/climb on highest place She can reach screaming ... just like in cartoons ... first time it happened I can not believe what I see. That is main reason we have a cat in house last 27 years ... And when young cat hunt his first mouse and bring it to home to show it, that is a real comedy ...
  16. One bitten by snake, after, fears even of lizards ... Too much idiotic thoughtless moves I had with CS, so, think that is better to try first couple of times and rethink whole stage again and again Until my impatience catch me again. Dead race - I run from impatience, but I can not leave it far after me, impatience is good runner. Also, impatience is bad guy - always wait somewhere around the corner to suddenly unexpectedly jump direct to my work Everlasting war with myself
  17. And time comes finally to go down ( in workshop) to go up with my build Light analyzing pictures and drawings, and I can conclude that there are/will be a lot of Hmmmm things For instance These two pictures "Old" Cutty`s rudder - pay attention to places when red arrows direct and "new" rudder It seems that in old pictures / old "Cutty", rudder was thinner than a stern post ??????? if it is correct, there is a time for decision - and I decide - same height As I see, there will be more questions like that, but, step by step forward I started tonight with experiments and playing a while First, making a rudder - first attempt Made of three layer of 2 mm strips to get over 5mm height, as stern post on Her Majesty is. In this place I concluded that long ago, when i was making second layer of planks, I missed to assume strictly parallel lines of stern post to "extend" to parallel lines of rudder, and it maybe must be corrected. I ll see when rudder will be done how it fits with "coopering" and another stuff I am not satisfied with result, so rudder will be reworked at all But it will be usable for further experiments ( straps, coopering, entrance in rudder hole, shape of upper part of ruder, etc etc ...) Then starting to play with solder iron, which was tonight pretty friendly to me, trying to make pintle holders (?) , e.g. straps with pintles (?) First attempt with coca cola can . It do not work - so soft and weak, and I do not know to solder aluminium. Never late to learn, after a hour of trying and after 100 m of soldering wire melted Then I found some thin cooper tape, and this is much better And testing, AND IT WORKS !!!! Almost happy with results, and closed workshop for today
  18. Hmmmm Garden works lasts longer than I expected ... In meantime, there is a lot to think about before starting Lou`s pictures and drawings, C-plans, and just a billion of photos ... Inner construction, covering, visible and not visible parts, metal fittings and construction of them, to be movable or fixed, how to pack all this in scale ....
  19. Ok, life must go on. Im coming to myself, and start thinking about stern and how to make it, and it is god sign that regular day flow continue. There will be first serious metal works for me (and I hope that solder iron will be friendly to me, not my enemy). I think that stern must be done before coopering. Little flue I had passed, some gardenwork at the first part of tomorrow must be done, and great comeback to Her Majesty at the evening. I can not wait, but ... She must be patiente just a little bit
  20. I almost have donated money, kids are volunteers, we ll see ...
  21. Thx my dear friends for empathy and care. We are all ok, but situation is terrible almost all around, and it will last ... After work, I just can not separate myself from TV, confused by opportune and contradictory news and prognoses ... Just for a while I had/have no will to make progress with CS. Typeing this on cell phone in front of TV and mistakes Ill correct later All this situation beat me very strong in feelings for poor citizens of Obrenovac. On G-maps or G-earth find Obrenovac, and following river Sava to Belgrade you can see little rown Barič and after it, Umka where we live. I know this terrain, know many people from Obrenovac, Admiral was working long ago in Barič, and have relatives there, friends in Obrenovac and Barič, and we went there almost every month by different business and personal purposes. So this catastrophe I feel pretty personal, even our house is on hill cca 30m under River. This is so close to us only 9 km, I regulary went to Obrenovac to swim in local olympic pool, take kids there for karate competitions, some of my klients live/work there ... just have no words to describe and on the other side I can write novel about ... which would be out of this forum
  22. In free time, still attached to TV ... horror ...
