  1. Hello Martin, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. That's a very nice looking ketch you're building. John
  2. Ian, the sail is of silkspan with a single coat of acrylic paint. John
  3. Been a couple of weeks, but I've been away at a conference for a week and last Monday I was working happily away when I accidentally (stupidly) cut straight through the jib stay, so most of the day was spent simply getting back to where things were when I came in! 🤢 Meanwhile, other work has been going on at home. Here is the foresail complete and rigged on its yard. It won't go onto the model for a while, but I plan on making and rigging all the square sails here at home and then taking them into the museum to fit on the model as required. John
  4. Hello Peter, and a warm welcome to the forum from another Sydneysider! If you get desperate re conflicting opinions, you can always come in and say 'Hello' at the National Maritime Museum on Mondays or Fridays (when our trains get back to some sense of normality) where I can be found up on the upper level working on our model of the 'Duchess'. 🙂 John
  5. Welcome home, Trevor! John

  10. Pat, I suspect that your lithographs may have let you down on this occasion. As Wefelck says, brails could only be used on a loose footed sail and they were not required at all on a hoisting gaff, as the sail was furled by lowering the gaff, not by brailing up the sail. The mention in the warrant of 'peak' and 'throat' brails also sounds unusual; it sounds more like they're talking about the halliards! There obviously must have been sheets to control the spanker - are they perhaps listed under the boom rather than the sail for some reason? The trysail wouldn't need a gaff, but it would be unusual for the storm sail to be rigged differently to the regular sails at that would entail a lot of extra rigging and unrigging when the sails were changed. I'll be happy when you finish this model and go on to something a little less mysterious! 😀 John
