100% agree with Mark. There's no reason you won't be able to make the display case also. Worst case you give it a whack and it doesn't work out, right?

Glad the build log is helping... your comments are the exact reason I spent so much time making it so detailed. Keep up the amazing work!!

...and with that it was done. I then ventured into my first somewhat -bigger woodworking foray and making a case. I was surprised (and have continually been) at how robust the Byrnes table saw is at cutting bigger stock. I made the case out of Peruvian Walnut which is a fairly soft for a hardwood (and very porous) and finished it with a french polish which is a total pain in the *** but looks beautiful. The base is curly maple with an ebony and rosewood inlay, and the model was mounted on two turned brass pedestals. As i just mentioned in my comment to Derek I really wish I had the forethought like him to install mounting hardware way back in the beginning, the problem being that my cross section kept listing because of the cannons on one side. It ended up taking epoxy to get it to sit right and now the Triton will never be leaving it's stand!

And that's that! It was a fun (and glacially slow) build, but I couldn't be happier with the final product. Every day for the last couple years my wife and kids walk by my Triton cross section, stop, stare in awe, and never fail to exclaim something like "Wow, Dad- that is amazing!"  Just kidding- none of them care and the only time they mention it is when we need to move it to put up the Christmas Tree.... but to me it was the journey. Everyone is going to have their own outlook on modeling, but I hope if you are starting this project that you don't take the mindset of this being a throwaway project that leads to something bigger- enjoy the ride and do the best you can. Personally, when I'm old and my hands don't work anymore I'd like to look back on this hobby and have built maybe a handful of incredible models that I know I put all my effort into and will be kept in the family than a houseful of models that I blew through and my kids toss in the trash the day after I die. Enjoy the ride and make sawdust!   -Chad

    Hey Brian,

Looks like a good start! I am pretty sure I have the drawings of my transom at home that I can share with you if it would help. Even if I don't I could take some measurements to help you out! I don't think I'd want to go through the process of trying to figure that all out again...

Back before the "Great Crash" of MSW I had built the Triton cross section. I had a pretty robust build log to go along with it where I detailed just about every little step of my build. As it turns out, a friend of mine had actually saved about 95% of it and it has been sitting on my hard drive for quite some time. I haven't been on here much at all the last couple years but I saw my wood list made it's way on here and has hopefully helped a few people. It got me thinking that I would be good to get the build log out there to help others, also. I am going to try to start parsing it out in posts over time starting from the beginning going step by step, but I also have no problem giving out the .xps file to anyone currently building who doesn't want to wait (just be warned it is 180 pages long and includes a lot of fluff you would have to wade through!).

Good luck Justin! Looks like you are off to a good start! Don't be afraid of cutting out frames- it's not too bad. The key is finding the sweet spot where you don't take too much 'extra" off of the frame piece but don't leave so much that you are fairing for days. I'll be following along!

    Thanks Ainars,

I just caught up on your build, wow!   Out of curiousity did you ever find a good resource for the well and locker mods you incorporated into your build?   Ive noticed sever references to the "well mod" but havent found the right post on it.

    Thanks for checking in.

Indeed!   I pieced this together myself when I went back and more carefully read through some of the logs.   Thanks!

    Hi Justin
My Idea to add locker, pump  room comes from ChadB built model. Thanks  him for inspiration.
When i start build your model as a guideline i use Chadb model.
"tkay11" and "AnobiumPunctatum" also help me with recommending good reference book. The Fully Framed model HMN Swan Class Sloops 1767-1780 by David Antscherl.
And of course a lot advice I found here on the forum simply browsing other models.
Putting all information together I create  my own vision about pump/locker room details and measurements.

I hope that the information provided will helps to you.

Johann, Joe, John- thanks for the kind words!

Not a huge update, but an update nonetheless. Waterways have been installed- they ended up being more of a pain in the butt than expected because of the need to drill out the cannonball divots and making them neat. I feel that similar to treenails, it would be easy to make them look incredibly sloppy if not lined up and even. I think I got it where I'm happy with it considering I don't have a mill. In the end I also am not a fan of cutting down the deck beam ends into a tab to fit between the clamp an waterway like I did. The idea is to make things easier but I don't know if it accomplished that and also made some of my beams a bit less sturdy. In the future I would notch the clamp and waterway as was done in the original ship.

I also cut down my frame tops. When I made my frames I didn't leave enough wiggle room on top so a few were a bit under the correct height for the rail. My solution was to cut them all down 5mm below the rail height which is why they look a bit low. I will add a 5mm cap along the top that will just get covered up by planking and I figure make things a little more rigid anyway.

    Thanks for looking in!

Beautiful work as usual! What type of finish do you use on your pearwood? I believe I remember reading in one of your logs at some point but I could be mistaken.

Nice looking jig and a very good start to your frames!

You will find that the tolerances for your frames shouldn't be a huge issue on this build since the frames are all mostly square. I think as long as you can't see the black lines of the edge of the frame drawing then you have left enough. It can't be said enough though- if in doubt leave more!
