    Hi Guys,

Mort, Grant & Jeff, Thank you so much for your very kind words, coming from you guys it's a real compliment.

As requested some pics of the boats sitting in position on the boat beams, they are not fixed yet because I need to get to some cavel cleats on the gun deck.

The boats are in their correct position and order so all that's needed to fix them is a spot of glue on the cradles.

I have now moved the Aggy out of the workroom because I am going to be making sawdust, I don't want to have to be cleaning her up because she's covered in the stuff. I could just cover her but when wielding long sticks about some damage may occur.

The length of the Lower Main Mast is 465mm, the overall height of the Main Mast is going to be 974mm off the ship.

That's it for now gents, thank you again for your kind comments.

    Hi Guys,

George, Space always seems a problem, we in the UK suffer the smallest houses in Europe unless you want to pay countless thousands for a larger property, my place is a 3 bedroom end terrace and is one of the larger builds in our street, built in 1950 it is solid but still not enough room for all that I would like to build, so deciding on what to build becomes quite important, I was thinking of Dianna but will probably have second thoughts on that due to her size, I will most likely go small until Caldercrafts Surprise is ready, I still want her.

Peter,  Thank you for your very kind words. The small boats aren't that difficult but there is a lot of work involved with them, they do suffer some damage to the bulkheads mainly because your used to working on the main hull which is a brute of a lump. I'm pleased that mine are all done.

At last the little boats are completed, there was a lot more work in them than I expected but I think they came out OK.

The oar shafts are a little thick but the length is right, I got the formular from Milton Roth's "Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern".

I do have a few pics which I will post.

    The 26ft Launch

    The 24ft Cutter

    The 18ft Cutter

Finally all four boats together as they will be positioned on the ship

So there we are, right up to date with where I am, next step is making the masts, the size of walking sticks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I graduated from the "furnish" Gondek, a little more effort and I can close it . Before closing, I will do the final photo.
Mastered the three-dimensional shapes and almost finished decor stern. Finished   completely underwater boards .

    Finally have a small update.

For lack of proper tools...I present my labour intensive method of grating construction. Actually, after I made the jig it went more quickly.

Now I am working on the rubbing strakes/wales - pictures next week - hopefully.

Adequately psyched by Wes' words of encouragement (  ), we embark on the gun ports.  First the Quarter Deck.

As mentioned earlier, Chuck provides templates for the gun ports.  These are considerately placed on a sheet separate from the rest of the plans so you are not cutting your plans to shreds.  The first photo shows the template for the 10 Quarter Deck gun ports in place:

As can be seen in the above photo, one bulkhead extension needs to be removed as it falls in the middle of a gun port.  This will also occur on the gun deck.  This next photo shows the fine-tooth Exacto saw blade I used for this as well as the pencil marks delineating the upright positions as transferred from the template:

This last photo shows the quarter deck gun ports completed and faired, as well as the template for the starboard side gun deck gun ports now in place.  Several things worth mentioning.......  The gun ports are not meant to be squares at this point.  They are slightly wider than high.  This is true of the ports for both the 6 and 12 pounders.  Also, the lintel or rail above the quarter deck gun ports is only temporary and will be removed once (as) the bulkwark planking moves up the hull.  A formal cap rail will be fitted at that point:

With 28 gun ports to complete on the gun deck as the next step, everyone gets a few days off without having to listen to me (try to keep the cheers at a minimum).   I am almost caught up with PAGE ONE of Ben's log   :D .

    Everyone stay well

    Hi Popeye,

    Thanks for your Birthday wishes.

Actually you have just caught it, as it's not 'belated' quite yet... at least I don't think so... at least not over here... or is it?...have the clocks gone back... no, I don't think so, I'm pretty sure that's pretty near the end of the month... is it me? (well I am 64 now, you know).

    Mike,

Thanks for your Birthday wishes too.

Thanks too for you kind words about my Sherbourne's furled mainsail. Yes, cutting back the sail back to around a third, seemed about right, although the shape was not quite triangular. The head and luff were of course full length, since these would show. The leech is similar but it tapers in towards the foreshortened foot, which as I said is about a third of its full length. I found that those proportions were about right. However, sorry, I don't have a picture I'm afraid.

I also found that just damping the sail a little before furling, also helped. I think it somehow compresses the material, and dries into the desired shape. You probably read that I bent the sail to the gaff before fitting the latter, so I actually furled it on the model, using the brails a little at a time and lifting with one hand. Going carefully, it worked quite well and I think looks reasonably realistic. I'll probably do the same for the staysail and jib, although the square sails will very likely be furled off of the model as you did it.

Btw, I've been looking at your Badger log, and your sails look very good. You seem to have a good method there.

    Wayne, Augie,

Thanks for your Birthday wishes, much appreciated and, in the words of Clint Eastward, have helped to 'make my day'!

Ratlines still continuing. I think I'm gradually getting better at them but doesn't make them anymore fun to do....! I keep having to tweak as the lines go slack as I put new ones in. Will get there though.

To ensure I don't go totally mad, I have taken breaks from ratlines and have done some work on the masts and yards. I have invested in a David Plane, and it has made the job of shaping the octagonal sections far easier. The shaping of the top sections of the masts was quite tricky and took a lot of patience. I will come back to these later with some more detailed images.

The Spiritsail has now been fixed in place and mostly rigged in.

I have fitted some pins to the masts so that I can fix the yards in place. This now really gives a great impression of how the ship will start to look.

On a rainy friday I thought it was time to do something…..

The holes in the tops are drilled and no, I don't used a drill hammer
Then it was time to shape the top of the lower part of the mast.
I have to make it squire and I don't have a lathe so I'll do it by hand using a file.
I think it work just fine
    Of course pictures of it.

Well, not everything looks perfect, but I‘m very happy with the result. Next weekend I‘ll try to make some better photos for the gallery. I‘m satisfied with the kit and for this price the quallity of the kit supplied materials is good. It was always a great pleasure building this little schooner.

This weekend I finally managed to finish the windlass. The supports for the spindle are probably a bit too massive. I used the kit’s original pawl bit post, “repaired” it by filling the pre-cut slit and then carving out the room for the rod.

I think this is a nice detail to have, as it is shown on several 1763 plans.

There is also a picture of HMC Hawke in Peter Goodwin’s Alert book (thousand thanks to Tony for showing me this treasure), here a grainy picture taken from page 36.

I fear I will miss two windlass bitts when I do the rigging…
I made some other things: a chimney with a cover (from a brass sheet; super-glued, as I have not yet learned to solder) and a mast ring, covered with canvas (like the one on the rudder coat: paper tissue and pve diluted with walnut stain).
The catheads are as yet unfinished; here I’m following gratefully again Tony’s tutorial.

Finally after a while an update at the San Ildefonso.

I have place the deadeyes and the chains.
The rope that you are seeing hanging from the top of the mast is my guide to see how the chains have to go.
You also see the same thing at Mobbsie's Aggy.
We where talking about it a few days ago and why give him a hint and don't do it myself ?
Not all the chains are following that, because there where some cannons in the way
When I was placing the deadeyes, I found out that I have not enough deadeyes of 5 mm……strange….
When I take a close look at the drawing I found out that at the stern , there are no deadeyes of 5 mm but 4 mm…..
So remove all those and replace them with the 4 mm.
    Problem solve !

    Aldo and Randy,

    Thanks guys, it's appreciated.

As promised here are the pics of the Pinnace, the main construction and paint job are completed, whats left to do is the Rope Coils ( Grant ), bucket and when I can figure out the correct length, the oars.

Also first planking is done on the 24ft Cutter, pictures show dry fit of the frames, clamped while glue dries and the false keel being molded.

    False Keel fitted

Internal ribs fitted and painted red ochre

    Rubbing strips added

    Deck planking complete

Ready for painting the rubbing strips

    Paint job complete

    Cutter dry fitted

    Glued and clamped up

False keel being molded to shape

This last couple of pictures shows where the ship stands currently.
I managed to get the poop deck in place.
I didn't want to totally cover up the captain's cabin and all the furniture, so I made a "trap door" of sorts with a mirror on the underside.

Several weeks ago I rescued a block of nice dry cherry from the woodpile and dried it further in the house.
The following picture shows a similar block of wood beside some of the finished strips I cut.

I am planning to make most of the deck furniture from this wood. I have actually used a little bit of it to make the gratings at the bow.

No more detours or distractions - the final planking is done!!! (YAY)
Spiling the planks at the bow took considerable time, but was well worth the effort. Thankfully, I had plenty of wide sheets of wood to allow for this technique.

Hamilton: I don't have any photos and don't have the model anymore. The Unicorn framing provided an approximation of the hull shape and in those days I wasn't quite as concerned as I would be today.

Back to Essex. I did a few easy things prior to planking. First, I added some additional framing at the stern to frame the doors to the quarter galleries. I'm considering showing the great cabin in some level of detail and also scratch building the quarter galleries. This framing will allow me those options down the road. Next, I painted the area of the lower deck cut outs with Pollyscale engine black. I then made and installed the sections of lower deck planking to fit the cut outs. The deck planking is holly (as will be all of the deck planking). The caulking is simulated by pencil on one edge of each plank. It's finished with Wipe On Poly. Lastly, I painted the inside and edges of the gun ports with Pollyscale AT&SF red.

I've decided to begin the planking with the upper outer hull. Full speed ahead!

    Cap Rail and Hull Finish

I have been able to put a little more time into the Syren this week.  Finishing the hull with the cap rail, and paint.  I have let the treenail holes blank up until this point, and I am considering leaving them that way.  I like the effect that they give in contrast to the planking they inhabit.  I know on the real thing that would not really be noticeable, except to an inspecting eye and at close range, but for an informative piece showing landlubbers and nautical neophytes how a ship is constructed, I think it fits the bill.

I should note here, that I have not stained or painted the planking in between the sheer and the wales, it has been oiled using white mineral oil.  I have been using this in other woodworking projects and for model stands for about a year now.  How it holds up beyond that I do not know, but for the items I have used it on so far I am pleased with the results.
