Hi everyone,
Whatever happened to Marc and the build? I'm still alive and the ship is still in the state of the last posting.
Just after my last post I had Kidney stone issues, then my Father had a fall and passed without ever regaining consciousness. Then I finally got the kidney stone resolved, which was followed by a life-threatening medical issue that required emergency surgery and half a year of recovery. That takes us into 2024 which had me dealing with additional family loss and medical fun. Then we adopted a puppy during the summer that has taken up our time. At the beginning of 2025, my dog and I had unplanned surgeries (not together😉). She is healed and I still have a week or so of recovery left. Now we're caught up to the second week of January 2025.
I have the model in my family room so that I look upon her almost everyday. I'm hoping to get back to work in the next couple of months.
stay well and I wish you a happy New Year.

BTW, yes, I have this model. I'll be going through your build over and over, just like I did for the Cutty. However, there are other ships in line first. I bought it for retirement.

Thank you, Harry!
especially since you weren't looking forward to explaining the work
I had several unfortunate events over the past two years that took me away from my normal daily life. I'm now going through my notebook to see where I left off and hoping to get back to work soon.
take care,
Marc

Harry,
Nice job on the plates!
Can you provide more info about how your plate embosser works and how you built it?

I decided to make the gin blocks.
Gin blocks are used to raise the yards. A chain goes from the yard through a sheave in the masts then connects to the eye of the gin block. another chain goes from one side of the hull up and through the block and back down to the other side of the ship where it is connected to a line which then is heaved (sometimes through a block on the deck). When the line is heaved on deck it pulls down on the gin block which pulls the chain attached to the yard and the yard travels up as the gin block travels down.
So here is how I made them
I put a dowel into my drill, using it as a lathe and cut the wheels for the blocks. No photos for that step. Took them and lost them somehow. Anyway, I found that the best way to do this was to measure the widths needed and cut grooves into the dowel - this is where the wheels will be separated with a saw. After cutting these grooves, I then shaped the groove to hold the chains into each wheel. I then separated each wheel using a hand micro saw. I made many extra wheels which I lost all over my garage some how.
I made the frame out of copper and brass. I made eye bolts bending brass wire and then soldered it to a straight piece of brass. I then bent the brass piece into the front and back vertical sections and then bent and soldered the copper into the horizontal section. Originally the prototypes had an axel and moving wheel. They took a lot of work for no real benefit over a fixed wheel version. Since they didn't need to function, I decided to make the wheels fixed.
So this is the prototype tests
Here are the gin blocks before painting
Then after painting

Another update. Slow going with RL getting in the way at the moment. Got the bulwark tops trimmed and am pretty happy. I know the photo appears to show all the tops trimmed below the line but that's the camera angle's fault. A square shows me it's spot on.

Finally an update. I'm reading and re-reading the instructions and looking at other logs of this ship. And I currently have all the framing (I think) done. About to start marking the top lines of the frames. Hopefully I get more time to spend on this project but seems real life keeps dragging me off.

I've decided to pause my other projects since as a result of my stroke my memory has failed in some areas. Mostly it's working but some things are gone forever like "how to plank" while other things are coming back to me. So, after much thought, I've ordered the NRG Planking Project. I've downloaded the manual and am reading through it. The kit should be here this coming weekend.

Hello again. Life is too short for ... Ship model making, classical art of painting research, museums, theaters, concerts, drawing and painting, collecting and listening to music (over 100 GB), playing the guitar, mindlessly reading books, writing and publish short stories (240), history research, Admin FB photo page MBDI, photography, cooking, my home yard, long walking, Bobtail Rhea, furniture making, bicycle, houm reparations, different modeling in wood and Ytong, computers and mobile phones, chess, sudoku extreme, travel trips in Serbia, swimming ...
Also visiting Princess in Germany where she live and work, be with Hothead who finally got his master degree in architecture
Also some ladies from time to time ...
And my office, of course. In April i can retire with 65 years old and full 40 years of working, but I`ll continue to work as attorney.
As you can see ... usual staff for me - "monkey see - monkey do" 😜
In all that stuff, I was stuck in finding appropriate material for masts for a long time
See you soon here, dear friend.

I'm so sorry to hear about your many issues over the past few years and the loss of your father, and happy to hear about your new puppy. I have been thinking about you as the log has remained in a sort of limbo for some time. Looking forward to reading the finish of this "build book" and seeing her sitting in her place of pride.

Hi All,
Small update:
Inboard Bulwark Planking completed (Maple) Remainder of Waterways installed Main Rail installed It certainly helped to have components for the Main Rail pre-bent to more or less conform to the Bulwarks.
The Main Rail still required some small persuasion to conform to the curves.
Next task.... Undecided at the mo. Thoughts: are:
Drill holes for Pedestal Rods Poop Deck Rail Deck Fittings, Bitts/Fife Rails Water Casks That's me for today. 🙂
Cheers....HOF.
