SkerryAmp got a reaction from CaptainSteve in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
I have broken free!!!
At least for tonight, so will be trying to make the most of it
First order of business...... give some love to the Mayflower. She has been patient over there on the workbench, although I could feel the judging, condemning glares from time to time.
So - gave 'er a littel bit of attention.
I went ahead and just added the white trim pieces along the railings and sides. Not a great deal of progress, but considering the last update was from March - it is something!!
The trim was painted using artists acrylics, which I am starting to get an affinity for. It covers nicely and with a little bit of leveling agent added seems to go on nice and smooth! They were glued into place, trimmed, sanded just a little to give them a bit of a worn look and then sit waiting for the next step. Which is the other pieces of molding as well as the green stripes and detail work.
Ahhhh. SO GOOD to work with the wood and paint and get something done!!!
Am now going to head on in and watch a little TV with the Admiral as she goes to bed much earlier than I do and then I will be back and catch up on the nearly 400 updates (according to that little notifier up there in the corner)
Thank you all for being patient! I will be making the most of my new found time until it gets snatched away again!!!
Enjoy and happy modeling!!!

Well in continuing my newly building resolve to get to the bench regularly I took some time and painted up some of the finish as well as attached the red trim beneath the railing black. I was hoping to put some more on however I discovered I painted the wrong size lumber so had to redo it So now we are waiting for the new strips to dry and those will go on tomorrow =)
Here are the strips drying away on my high tech drying rack (i.e the middle shelf of my workbench/desk/computer table. There is also a little cameo appearance in the back there of the MSW Calendar
Here we have the stripes painted on the sides
and the red accent trim along the bottom of the upper black stripe.
Stepping back, it is coming together nicely. The colors bringing it slowly to life
Tomorrow once the new strips are dryed they will be mounted and then the stripes will be added and then I do believe it will be on to the bow!
Thanks all!

SkerryAmp got a reaction from Karleop in Announcing the Model Ship World Ship Kit Database Project
Really good idea, and it is something I thought about while formulating this plan. Unfortunately I think that would be a fair bit daunting a task for me to take on at the moment. That would certainly be valuable I agree, but the list I think would be quite larger than I could manage =( Not off the table, just definately on a back back burner =)
Hehe, thanks Floyd - greatly apprecaite it! Am very glad my crazy helps out some folks - that makes it all worth it!!
Thank you Danny! Means a lot! Regarding sorting names, right now you should be able to click the headers on the columns and it will sort by that column. So if you wanted to sort by names just click the kit column and it will sort the current returned set. I will be adding a free form search box where you can type in a kit name or part of a kit name and it will only show those kits so folks who only want to see Constitutions can get a succinct list of them as well as those folks who can remember only a part of a name (like me hehe) can hopefull find kits easier.
And big thanks for the ship types - some of them are easy to find and figure out, others are a bit confusing. Even doing a search on the ship sometimes comes back with several different ones. Will update those this week!!

Adam:
Thanks for looking in and for your kind words.
I have been making some small progress. I have the carcass of the deck house made and I will be at the Billy Creel Memorial Wooden Boat Show this Saturday and Sunday at Biloxi with the schooner and a few skiff models doing some work and talking to folks. It should be a great time.

Hi Bob, glad you like it so far, it really is a fun one to work on.
Well, ya got me =)
I didn't too much (hardly any) detail on the planking because quite honestly it is a lot of magic under there. I am HORRIBLE at planking. What you see is a great attempt at getting the planks somewhat where they are supposed to be and then filled, and sanded, and filled some more and sanded some more, and filled and yup - you guessed it, sanded.
Since most of the hull is painted I had the luxury of not having to stress on it too too much. The planks that can be seen are not bad at all to lay in as they are for the most part just parallels and straigth with some simple bending at the bow to get them to lay in well.
=)
Planking is something I am working on improving my self as I do each build. The other ones I am working on I am not going to be able to fake it in any way - so this will be interesting!

Ben, thanks for the comments and for looking in. All three ship's boats are hung and griped. These last pictures are of the yawl in it's proper spot. At this point, I'm going to call this build completed. Give me a day or two and I'll have the full fledged completion pictures posted to the proper spot and this log. Thanks to all for the support and comments. Next up... The Model Shipways 1/76 Constitution.

Russ,
Rather than marring the rails, you might try cutting a slot (though yours may be a bit small). I borrowed from a tool used to cut hinge slots in RC airplanes. The tool had two blades, one was sharpened to a point and the second had a sharpened vee notch. The point makes the slot and the vee cleans the slot. I made my tool using the same strap as the chain plates .063 x .014 inch. Teh vee notch is just visible at the top end. Your strip may be too small make a practical tool.

More progress tonight. Now that the deck is planked, the next thing will be the deadeyes and chainplates. My first pass at these was ... bad. Really bad. So, I decided to reengineer the chainplates a bit. Hopefully, this attempt will be better.
The important issue is scale. The lower deadeyes and chainplates will all be painted white, but they need to appear in scale. That means everything has to be smaller than what I am used to working with. The chainplate is a simple strap with a loop soldered into its top end. However, there needs to be at least two fastenings for the strap into the hull. At this size and scale, that is a problem. The brass nails I have in stock are too large. So, I have made the strap with its loop and then drilled two holes in the strap into which two pieces of brass wire were soldered. The outer edges of each wire was trimmed and left just proud of the strap to appear like bolt heads. The wires go into the holes in the side of the hull. I will probably add a dab of CA to secure them. Even without glue, they are snug in their holes, but the CA should give some strength as well.
Here are some pics. I still need to clean up the shape of the strap, but it should look okay once the hull is painted. There will be a wooden cap over the edge of the rail hiding that tear out along the edge of the rail. The strap is about 1/32" wide and the holes for the wires are .018" diameter.
Questions and comments welcomed.

This past week, I got a little more decking done and I also added the rubrail along the sides of the hull. This is a 1/32" square piece that follows the line of the planking.

Here is another small update. I had some time to solder up the chainplates tonight. There are ten total. Each has an eye soldered in its upper end and is drilled for two wires that will fasten it to the hull.
Here is a photo of a dry fit. Never mind the wires, they will eventually be glued in and cut off. Also, the chainplate will be cut shorter, just below the bottom wire. That will happen only just before final installation. The rail is notched for the chainplate to lay flat against the hull and there will be a wooden cap fixed along the outer edge of the rail to help secure the chainplates upper part.
Questions and comments welcomed.

I made some progress tonight as I begin to shape and fit the rails. I am going to try and get each side's rail on in one piece. It is not my first choice and it may not work in any event. It is certainly more difficult getting it all shaped in one piece, but I am worried that the stanchions may not give me enough support for proper scarph joints.
Questions and comments welcomed.

I got in an entire hour in the shop. I made and installed the cleats on the bulwarks.
Here is a photo of what they actually looked like on a schooner. This is a small part of a larger photo, but I am pretty sure this is the deck of the Julia Delacruz, built in 1924.

I managed to get a little work done this weekend. I managed to finish installing the port side bulwarks stanchions. The large cleats on the stanchions are next.

Here is a little more progress. I decided to break up the pace a bit and work on some deck furniture.
Here is the windlass so far. It is a relatively simple assembly, compared with Grand Banks fishing schooners.
Here is a photo of an actual windlass from the schooner Marie Foster circa 1920s.
