I bought some Aluminum Black.   Just tried it and it works perfectly. Thanks for the suggestion. 

Thank you sir.  I am trying to avoid painting all of them.  They are barely 10mm x 2mm and I have dozens of them to color.

I am currently building a ship that requires dozens of aluminum railing stanchions to be black.  Not wanting to paint them all, I searched for ways to chemically blacken them.  Being a bit short of funds at this time, I am looking for something that uses chemicals I may gather from the local grocer or hardware store.  I am looking for a good, dark black color.  

Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

I built this kit a few years ago.   Very pleasurable build.   Infortunately, the finished ship was destroyed .  Going to rebuild it one of these days. 

I have tried my hand at sail making with little success.  I just purchased Billing Boats' Marie Jeans.  The sails are a major part of the beauty of the boat.

May I request some recommendations for someone who can make the sails for me?

Got the chair and the popcorn out to watch this build.  Considering buying this one myself.

Well, the Mariefred is done. My only complaint was the decals. The first one completely disintegrated a soon as it touched water. I clear coated the rest and had no problems. Ages of Sail, you will see my next order later today.

I am truly enjoying this build.  Building her sister ship will happen.  Probably not right away, but it will happen.  My wife has asked that I build a couple of Occre's trams.  The good side is that she would like me to include the power trucks with them and lay some track around the house to watch them run. 

Well, I finally got some time to do some more work.  Her roof is on.  The lights are up and running.  Not much more to go.  Here are some new pictures.  Enjoy.

Finally back making some progress.  I have almost everything painted.  The wiring has been run and the lower deck lights hooked up.  I need to install the window glazing yet.  Going to frost it a bit to lower the ability to see the wiring and such.  Working on the benches on the main desk also.  This almost feels like a plastic model now.  Most of the major work is done.  Now time to complete painting and do assembly.  Many of my coming weekends are busy, so I will not have much time to truly focus on the build.  I hope to finish her by the end of the month.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

I am back.  For the first time in 20 years, I have an actual dedicated modeling area.  I no longer have to use an antique desk.  Got the new area all setup and have started building again.  The initial planking is almost done.  I will put out some more pictures shortly.

Glad to see after the initial frustrations that this beautiful ship is coming along so well.  Cannot wait to get back at the Marie Fred in the coming weeks.

Well, the move is done.  We are now unboxing everything.  For all purpose, there was no damage to any models.  What little damage was done will take a total of about 30 minutes to fix.  Very lucky.  Still going to be unproductive from a building standpoint for a while.  The new house has an actual "Hobby" room.  Until I have the time to put together a building station in the room, I will not be building.  My building station has been an antique roll top desk and I need to stop working on it.  So, I should be back up and running in the next 30-45 days.

Glad to see you are back at it.  Cannot wait to finish the Mariefred so I can tackle the Bohuslan.

I have had absolutely no issues with fit and finish on the Mariefred.  She has been an absolutely relaxing build so far.  I have spoken with another builder who has the Bohuslan from Turks/NCB and has absolutely no issues with fit or alignment.  Puckotread may have received a bad one.  Talk to the folks at Ages of Sail, www.agesofsail.com, for additional feedback.

I will probably take a shot at the Bohuslan when the Mariefred is complete.  Falling under fortunately/unfortunately, my build was just delayed by 2 to 3 months.  My wife just received a job offer in another city.  Due to my working from home, we are able to pick up and move with no issues.  The job is great for her which is the fortunate part.  The unfortunate part is that my shop is now in boxes.  By the time we finish packing and move, I am looking at 2 or 3 months before building resumes.  Not looking forward to moving my ships.

John, I have the lighting wiring harness done.  I will check out Ngineering on the next one I light.

Regarding doing such a large build, she has been a sheer pleasure.  I had the same concern when I built the Endeavour you see in the background of some of my photos.  At the end of the day, it actually was easier than the smaller ships.  The curves of the hull are less dramatic, making planking a bit easier.  Normally, I turn masts by chucking them in my drill and using it like a hand-lathe.  Cannot do that with the mast on the Endeavous.  I had to learn how to use a spoke shave for shaping the mast.

I say dive in.  This would be a good kit to use for a large-scale build as all the parts fit so well.

The center of the main cabin is the only part open to the hull.  I am almost done installing a floor in it to block light from going into the hull.  I like the idea of the expansion or blue foam.

Absolutely beautiful ship.  I am building NCB's s/s Mariefred now and the Bohuslan is next on the list.

I am not going to plate the hull.  Going to leave her smooth.  I just finished reading your build of the Bohuslan.  Absolutely beautiful.  My CFO (wife) has already approved allocating assets for this one next.  She likes the big boats.  Wants them around the house.  Actually my wife bought the Endeavour in some of the Mariefred pictures.

Great build.  I am currently building the s/s Mariefred from NCB.  Also my first non-rigged ship in a long time.  This has been a fun build so far.  Not too stressful.  I have the log at http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/9228-ss-mariefred-by-burnside63-nordic-class-boats/.  I am also lighting her.  Little different lighting this one due to multiple cabins on multiple decks. 

New update.  This is the mockup with the hull almost done.  I have almost all planking done.  Time to break out the putty and make sure her shape is right.  The floor inside the main cabin is under way.  It is being installed to prevent light from flowing into the open hull.  Getting there.  This almost feels like a plastic model due to having all the sub assemblies that will pull together to complete the ship.

The small cabin I showed sits on the main deck, so it has a floor already.  My concern is the large main cabin that is part of the bulwarks.  The upper cabins sit on the upper deck, so they already have floors also.

Thank you for sharing your build.  She is a beautiful ship.  This is on my short list.  Cannot wait to see additional progress.
