And now, after 5 years and seven months to the day since I first began planning the model . . . the final steps.

I've assembled the case with a background of the Harbour of Theodosios in Constantinople, where the Byzantine galleys were found from which I got so much information in building the model. The buildings in the background are part of the Boukoleon Palace complex, the Emperor's main residence.

And here are the remains of the very same buildings, in today's Istanbul.

I had a bit of trouble getting the frame to fit tightly and square - one of the screw-holes had to be re-drilled. And while I had the ship on the stand and inside the case, and everything glued in place, just about to screw everything together, a fly got inside! Had to pull the perspex off and get rid of the fly. Grrr! All ready to go, just getting things adjusted so I could start screwing together, and the fly got back inside!

Fortunately sanity prevailed, in the form of my lovely wife who said "You hold the case, I'll get rid of the fly." Just as well - I had visions of disaster at the last moment with me throwing the whole kit and kaboodle across the room.

But now, here it is in all its glory.

A highlight for me was a trip from SPB aboard an RF Navy auxiliary (Navigation Trainer) to Kronstadt! The Mariners Cathedral. But of course I knew something of the history of the place, and about  the raid by the CMB'S BY Capt Agar. Even had a friendly discussion about it with an ex soviet Sub, Capt. Who pointed out the various landmarks .

Thanks Steven and Carl and all others for the likes. I have largely completed the running rigging and all that now remains is to decide on the sails. Should I leave it with bare yards or bend sails which may obscure a lot of detail in the rigging or maybe not. I have a cunning plan to do the sails in Silkspan to reproduce the bellying of the sails ( see my carrack build for a similar technique).

I have fitted the rope Jacob's ladders for access to the "crow's nests". I have positioned them so that they would not foul the running rigging . This was before ratlines appeared on the shrouds, at least in the Mediterranean.

Yes, I will carve every single piece of ornament in boxwood. I had a proposal by a russian modelist to make me every sculpture of the SR in resin, (or wood with cnc I don't remember) in exchange of my plans, and a proposal just like Michel Saunier by a french modelist to offer me some of the decorative parts in resin but I declined both, I want to make as much as I can by myself and I want only wood for the decorative parts. Resin looks good on Michel Saunier's model but who knows how the wood will turn in a few years... Resin will always look the same so maybe in a couple of years the difference between the two materials will be too obvious.
For my photos I only use my Iphone... with the light of my workshop. Only the last picture is made by daylight in my living room. I find the Iphone make some really good photos, with much faithful colors than my canon compact camera I previously used. The only inconvenient is when you need to zoom, the precision of the image runs down. And I like to take some distance from the subject and then zoom rather than make closer shots because the closer you are the more deformed is the image. Especially with rounded shapes as a ship's hull. I have not found a solution for that.
These last days were my week of "holydays", and I tried to stay offline from the work as much as I could because I needed to. On sunday I return to work and I will make my part of the job of course.
Take care everyone, best regards !

Thank you Victor ! I didn't know about it, I will try !
Work on the Soleil Royal goes on, this time I shoudn't disapear for a few months... well, I hope !
I'm working on the decorative parts of the third deck, much time to adjust these small elements... But the result is there, it's quite good looking. The boxwood parts are 0,5mm, and they are made round on there edges. (sometimes I struggle with english language to exprim simple ideas !! 😅)
