Geert, I had the same question in my build log. All the replies I got were they are about 3 feet long with a hole drilled at the ends for lifting out. So I scaled my accordingly. Turned out looking nice so that is what I went with.

Just produced the Stem Plans. Not really certain of the best way to get the tapering on the plan so we'll have to see if this approach works or if it needs further adjustments..

I have enough to get started (and keep me busy a few months) so I might stop work on plans until my Bounty is out of the way and start when I start work on the build.

Then again....hmm have to consider the pros and cons.

    Hi

This was waiting for me when I arrived home yesterday, finally I will be able o keep things squared.

As for the black paper on the frames, the double frames they are sturdy enough ( if the one I built can be used as an example) the simple ones might be a ploblem. I used the paper because I read somewhere that they used tar or pitch on the frame joints, but now I can't find it, will have to go through the books again...

    Thanks Mike.
I made some changes in space for main mast, as seen on in ChadB build, thank for inspiration, very nice.

The hose I had was just a little small for the one in the thickness sander, I just wrapped some electrical tape around the hose for a snug fit. Works great and is alway easily removed or put baclk on.

    Hi,

GabeK, thanks. I did see your log during my research but like.you said it's difficult to find the formula for the chocks dimensions. I did find one on the TFFM book but I'm missing one of the variables. I ended up simplifying the formula.

I cut all the frames peices, still can't control the scroll saw properly so some are closer to the line then others.

In the mean time finished the "C" double frame. The second pair has 2 chocks and 2 scarphs. With the mill the scarphs where much easier to make. Still there is a lot of fine sanding with the micro files...

Now to glue everything, sand and then treenails...

Between the frames, a small piece of wood is glued temporally to keep the correct distance from bottom to top.

I wish all forum members a happy and prosperous New Year with a lot of modelling pleasure in 2017! Before going to the family this afternoon, I have some time to line up with the progress on the cross section.

As an aid to place the frames vertical, I made two wooden perpendicular supports which keep a shelf vertical. On the shelf the middle line of the cross section is drawn. That will be my aid to glue the frames on the keel.
The lieutenant on the second picture is in scale 1,70 m high, just to have an idea of the proportions

    Hi,

Another day of ups and downs. I cut the flat futtocks and used the scroll saw to cut the guides for the keel and keelson slots

Then used a flat carving knife to cut the excess and prepare the pieces for the mill so I have nice squared, flat surfaces

    And after the mill

Next phase was the chocks, I cut the edges for the first two of the "C" frame

But was can be seen the one on the left suffered a fatal accident. I was cutting the angled face with a x-acto blade and because I was cutting parallel to the wood grain it just cut the egde off. Basic mistake...

I still used the other edge to make the other chock

It came out better then I was expecting for the first one

Now to redo the flat futtock...

    Back at it?
Well, my poor Triton has been sitting idle for almost a year and collecting sawdust from my other addictive hobby - pen-turning. (A dark abyss, but rewarding for the fast results). A victim of this new passtime and the bathroom renovation from hell at my cottage, the deck clamps that I started laying out last January have not been touched in months. I did get a new Proxxon saw blade which I hope will fix my frustrations ripping planks.

So, here is the status on the deck clamps:

Using The Anatomy of a Ship: HMS Diana I planned out the anchor stock design and realized that, because of the angled cuts, it would be easy to make these run crooked. The lines on this paper are exactly the width I need for the clamps so I am able to lay out the planks nice and parallel, keeping them in place with pins as I go.

Brilliant. Some wonderful people gave me a jeweller's saw for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to trying that out... I think this build is going to go slowly, and hopefully plod along beside the new incoming project - HMS Diana from Caldercraft, but built as Ethalion (1797). That's due to arrive in the new year and will be much easier to get on with in the evenings without annoying the neighbours

    Happy Christmas to you all

Thanks to various comments (notably Dirk's -- thank you Dirk!), I decided to experiment a bit with oils. I decided in the end to make up my own Danish oil, seeing that I already had the ingredients. I followed the advice given by Bob Flexner at http://www.popularwoodworking.com/techniques/finishing/oil-finishes-their-history-and-use The recommended dosage to start with is one-third of each, so that’s what I mixed.

I liked the results, so that’s what I’ll stick with for the rest of the build.

I planked just over half the gun deck, along with the lower strakes of the gun deck walls. I then oiled the inside of the lower walls and the two decks -- leaving the outside of the frames and the wall planking above the gun deck.

I need to finish the planking of the gun deck walls, sand down the fore and aft section faces, and then I’ll be working on installing the eyebolts for the cannon and making up the gangway brackets.

I am amaized at the research and prepotory work involved in scratch building. I have just now completed my full set of 1:32 prints for this build. They are printed out on 13 X 19 paper (perfect for this scale) using a Canon IX6820 printer. Since printing a sacrificial set of plans I have cut out the paper and in process of attaching them to wood stock in preparation to cutting them out. Hopefully actual shipbuilding can start this coming week.

Finished what I could with is first try.

On this pair the left side scarph is broken. I first try to do it with a carving knife but when doing the flat part of the scarph the corner of the edge broke. The others were done with the mill. I guess I have to make a jig because even with the mill the angle of some of the flat parts scarph are wrong so the top timber doesn't align with the plans.

For the second pair the floor futtock is wrong. For some reason the right side of the floor is lower them the left one.

I'm still using this pair to train the chocks.

I've faired the frames to the inside of the line which I was already advised against...

So after trying the chocks is back to doing a new pair.

    Thanks.

The Alaskan Yellow Cedar barge has been planked.  Still lots to do on this one.  I havent even faired the hull inboard yet.  But before the molding and red paint is added I thought this would give you guys a nice idea of how the yellow cedar looks.  I have just applied some wipe on poly.  You can see the cherry version behind it.   They are actually the exact same size but digital cameras do these funny things....

I would like to get the cedar version to the same point as the cherry version so I can progress with both simultaneously.

All the cedar is wood project source

Back before the "Great Crash" of MSW I had built the Triton cross section. I had a pretty robust build log to go along with it where I detailed just about every little step of my build. As it turns out, a friend of mine had actually saved about 95% of it and it has been sitting on my hard drive for quite some time. I haven't been on here much at all the last couple years but I saw my wood list made it's way on here and has hopefully helped a few people. It got me thinking that I would be good to get the build log out there to help others, also. I am going to try to start parsing it out in posts over time starting from the beginning going step by step, but I also have no problem giving out the .xps file to anyone currently building who doesn't want to wait (just be warned it is 180 pages long and includes a lot of fluff you would have to wade through!).
