BLACK VIKING reacted to Louie da fly in 10th-11th century Byzantine dromon by Louie da fly - FINISHED - 1:50
Been adding the lower bank of oars, one at a time - I had to wait till the glue dried on each before I moved onto the next, because a whole lot of oars with wet glue would be too hard to keep aligned without messing each other up. So here we go:

To get all the oars at the same angle, I'd previously drawn parallel pencil lines on a long piece of wood below decks and aligned the oars to the lines.

Note that the faithful cat-food container has again proved its worth:

But I couldn't do it that way on the other side, so I came up with what turned out to be a better way.

Next period build I do  I really must invest in some decent scale ropes  and not rely on the cheep  kit threads that fray  like there is no tomorrow.

Thanks  Lou,   yep  sometimes it seems that way  - kind of need to take a break  between  doing different stages  to break the  routine.

Nice progress OC. One thing that is for certain, it makes little difference on whether it is wood or plastic, the rigging still seems to go one line at a time and it always seems so tedious and messy until you get to the last line and all of the sudden it becomes a masterpiece.

    Good day all,

Some more good progress  today  -  I made up the upper mizzen shroud ropes  and attached the dead eyes  (Just a bit of trivia  I counted how  many dead eyes I have fitted and roped up  - 136)   they just need lacing up and painting.

I also  added the two  blocks to the ends of the upper main yard - then starting on the one side a ran the lift rope through the blocks and down to the bulkhead handrail  where it was tied off.

Added another pic of the deck.

    Good Morning Pat;

I can help with some of your questions, but this is somewhat outside the period I know best. My answers are general, not specific to the particular vessel you are modelling.

    3. The part of the bitts below deck was frequently tapered, and became noticeably thinner in a fore and aft direction by the time they reached the deck beams below.

    4. The gallows was fitted to extended topsail sheet bitts, being around 5'6" - 6' high to the underside. The crossbeam on the top extended beyond the bitt pins. It was frequently used either to support a walkway projecting forward from the quarterdeck, or the spare spars for the ship. I have never seen a gallows referred to in any context but as an extended set of bitts with a high-level crossbeam.

See below for an example of 'horned' bitts, from the framed model of Bellona, & an 18th century gallows from Royal William. The top surface follows the deck camber.

    All the best,

    Mark P

I see you read Stars and Stripes Mark!

As far as I know MPC was in use long before my time, (69-70) in Vietnam CDW. The script we got in Vietnam at my time was not the same as the pictures I show above though. I was sent to Korea for a couple of months to the 8th Army NCO academy and while I was there the MPC used was the bills you see in the picture. I also had some Vietnam script but that was in my actual scrap book along with the majority of my pictures and my ex-wife decided that I no longer had any use for it. So all I have left today is the stuff that I didn't think was all that good and kept in a box for all these years. I just dragged them out into the daylight for the first time a couple of months ago. The only reason they survived was because they were in my foot locker that is still at the foot of my bed and has been locked ever since it arrived as cargo after I got home. I have unlocked it now and then over the years but mostly it remained locked and that was probably the only reason she was not able to get rid of the stuff inside before I could get it out of the house.

Completed the standing rigging this past week and the masts are now topped out at full height.

With that work complete I have moved on to working the yards and sails. Made templates for all of the sails on graph paper to test for size and fit. Now I will transfer them to cloth and begin sewing.

I am also going to add the details to the yards themselves as well as blocks and such to prepare them for the sails. I am leaning towards a combination of set and furled sails but we will see.
