Mark: I thought they looked a little strange. On the 1:10 model from the museum they are a little offset from the wales but not as severe as the templates. And Peter: There's even more variations on the port sizes: So with all this in mind I thought I'd just let the port markings from the templates be as is for the time being. It's difficult to alter too much when one doesn't know what DeAgostini has planned. Thank you guys for the head up on the issue. Easy for me to forget these details if you don't point them out. Finished this months planking. Wonder why they couldn't made the frames just a little higher: Getting there, she was one big wall of wood: Even though the bamboo was not the best quality (thickness and width very uneven), and it swells a LOT when soaked, it's very easy to bend in all directions. And sanding is easy too, so I'm sure all those bumps and cracks will be gone after a kilo or two of filler and a couple of weeks sanding... Now on to planking the stern...

Hi Eddie! I think I'll cut the portholes before I start with the shaping and sanding, or I'll have to do the markings all over...

Yes, you will have to line it with some nicer wood or make your own.

Planking is now on par with instructions. A lot of cutting must be done to fit the keel and bowsprit: Why you should not use wet planks. A lot of shrinking when they dry: Instructions wants you to start planking the deck now but I'll wait a little longer before I do that. I got some new brushes and stuff so I'll do the rest of the decorations soon.

It took about a half hour to assemble this months parts The two decks: The doors, or whatever it's called... The single aftmost door: Somehow the deck was 3-4 mm too low so I had to lift it up and hang it on the door frames: Later the planking will help keep it in place... The metal pieces that came are the roofs of the doors at the bottom of the photograph. More to come when I start planking again... I have also more or less finished the Battlestation now. Only have to mount the netting on top and do a couple of ropecoils for the left cannon. This is how it looks: When this is done and out of the house a tram and Lisboa diorama is up for building in the background of Vasa.

The monthly shipment has arrived! Hull planks (52 of them), Upper stern decks and 2 metal pieces: They are only labelled as "Metal components" but I think they are the roofs of some of the doors on one of the stern decks... More to come when I assemble the parts...

Jörgen: I'm not sure I follow you. I don't see all that much of a difference on the cannons. maybe ours are a little longer? There should be gratings on the batterydeck alright. Don't know what DeAgostini is up to there but... One could always make some and put there. And you wrote, not too much will be visible down there... I guess you will catch up with me before I get to the sanding... In April these will come: Jan: I solved it the way politicians solve problems... I just pretended there was no problem.. No, I sanded the frame down to size.

I have now caught up with the instructions regarding the planking. This is how she looks after 184 planks: A lot of variations in thickness and width. I gave up early trying to sand the planks so the thickness would be equal. She's one big fat mama... You get the feel of her size now that the hull is coming along. Iphone box there so I won't break any more frame tips when turning her over: A lot of sanding ahed of me (but not yet). But until the next shipment I have a few decorations to paint.

Issue 43 will have the first planks for the second layer. And rumor has it that the instructions for this start in issue 48.... But I think that it's the same sort of wood

Ah, at last... I'm not alone anymore. And you're off to a good start. I would recommend you go ahead with your plan on using longer planks on the hull. its a pain with 30cm bits. Although the bamboo is very easy to bend, it's hard getting 3 planks to lay in a straight line.

Looking at the price on Amazon I think the customs fee isn't that bad. They add 25% VAT in Sweden. No customs as kits are classed as toys...
-
Anyone know if there is anywhere in europe one can get these kits?
-
Yes, not the best of material. (And not the best planking skill) But then again it's very easy to bend, and nice to sand.... tested a little sanding on the hull and it was very easy, much easier than walnut or the stuff that came with the Bohuslän. That took forever to sand down. So the finishing job won't take long... I hope.

At last the new shipment arrived. Issues 33 to 36. And this is what I got: False deck parts, another 51 planks (239 so far) and some deck planks. no decorations this time. This is how far I've come with the first planking: Planks differ some in both width and thickness, but I will have to do some heavy filling and sanding anyway so... Three of the deck parts in place. No matter how I measured and checked, the slots on the decks did not align with the frames. There are reinforcements from earlier that line up correctly but the frames are still off. I knocked them loose but hit a little too hard on one and it broke. A couple of doors will go here: Everything fit nicely with the beam. The right frame was pulled forward a little and glued in place later And the last piece of deck: So, back to planking...

Hello Nisse, If you can wait I would recommend to start building after issue 19 or 20.... A lot of trouble with aligning etc can be avoided. You can always paint decorations until then.... I keep all the painted figures in the plastic bags they came in... Until I find some kind of box with lots of compartments (80 would do).

Thanks for the replies. The ****** planking is not all my fault. Lot of the strips are a little wavy and that results in the gaps. I will have to do a lot of sanding and filling anyway so I thought this could just go along. The plus side of bamboo is that it's very easy to bend.... So I'll use them. Just hope the final layer is better quality. I've done worse planking than this, (and better) and got quite a good result in the end so I'll let these strips stay on. I don't want to risk the frames breaking as they are quite thin. Hopefully the planking will get better....

Hello This is a mini-update. I have finally got some time over to start the planking. Off to a humble start: As you see I really suck at planking. But there will be a second layer so... The planking goes towards the bottom of the hull. I have to turn her upside down and therefore broken some of the tops of the frames. It'll be fun gluing them back on.... Hopefully I'll have something more exciting next time...

Hello folks... Due to a lot of things happening at home I have not been able to do any building... I have to do a lot of sanding and fairing on the frames and can not do this in the kitchen. My work has also moved to a larger building and we have a lot to do there putting everything in place so I just can't sit down there and sand my ship as the others run around doing all the work... But a new shipment has arrived. Issues 29-32. This was in the bag: Mostly hull planks (81 of them. Good quality), one section of the deck and 3 decorations. There are now 188 hull planks at 300mm each. Thats 56,4 meters... (Around issue 48 the second planking will start so the poor quality planks will be covered) And the decorations: I will start painting the decorations again as soon as things quiet down here. Have patience...
