Some great bits of info guys... I didnt think of the corrosion aspect of iron agant copper in salt water..  ...

When i was putting the hinges on, I did think to myself.. Jeez they stand out a bit against copper but not much more.. I probably noted this due to looking at other builds but not really noticing the bronze hinges yet...  I may just paint over them with some bronze coloured paint as they are brass.. i may just leave them black also..

Tom, that is interesting and makes some perfect sense.. I thought the rudder 'screws or bolts' may carry on through keel and rudder and become like a massive rivet..   All very interesting, i love these finer things about ship contruction...   Regards  Ollie

Forget about the mumbling mate, the pictures spoke for themselves!  An excellent job, the flickering light really enhances the model (which is looking great) - SWEET!!!!!

Hi all, My led project was tackled today amongst other things, quite a success..  I purchased a remote controlled 'led candle' off ebay for $11 delivered..

I gutted it and re wired and modified to suit, lost the progress pictures unfortunately.

Remote works from a bout a metre, but it will need some kind of 'line of sight' (you cant box the electronics completely if you want to remote to work properly.). It is housed inside the unit originally so it does work somewhat inside a model, but in a closed timber hull may be a bit much i think..  I get a pathway through my cut-away...

How long this setup lasts in the long term is unknown. But it will get used rarely..  And if fails its no big loss or can be replaced..

The light is appropriate looking, dim and flickers well... I may put a lantern over it instead of just a crude bulb...   If anyone wants a link send me a msg i can provide one for Australian or NZ memebers..

NOTE - it would be safest to contain batteries in plastic bag or container in case of future leakage..

I had to make a video to help show the result..Excuse my mumbling..   Ollie

I just wanted to share a few other things...

I have realised how well fishing line cuts into things (like your fingers when you catch a big one) and on other contraptions i have made.. Great for this process,  Its cheap it comes in many thicknesses.. Worked a treat and took a minute.. Pull back and forth with pressure till line is at least flush with top of timber.. i did this in a vice..

I decided to tape off with the Tamiya tape like you guys told me to.  I did find it at the hobby store.  I figured I should probably start learning how to tape off.  I spent all afternoon on it.  I did 4 thin coats.  This is what I ended up with.  I did my best to clean up where it did mess up.  It is so tough to do this part.  The white paint is so hard to work with.  I am not sure what I am going to do.  Either leave it like it is, cover it up and try again, cover it up and leave it black, or cover it up and go a head and try the white pen.  I am not sure how it is going to look if I try to cover it up again.  I am quite disheartened that I can't get it perfect.  What do you guys think would be the best move at this point?

I was finally able to assemble the bridge wings.  This proved to be simple, yet the wrong move could mean a do over.  The first thing I did was locate the parts and cut them out.  This time I cut out one side first and on completeion did the other side.  This will prevent clutter as well as not getting anything mixed.

Since each wingg consisted of two pieces gleud back to back I took care that all the fold were correct before the final glue up.  This also meant dry fitting them together and to the bridge,  Considering the condition ,y eyes were in this was not fun. but tediou.  However the end result was worth the extra care.

After making sure of the fit I glued them on and am happy with the result..

      The funne;s will be next.

Thanks Ollie, I reasoned that as she is such a small boat, you are effectively looking at her from a much closer distance than say a Victory or an Aggie etc., thus the plank detail would be more apparent even at 1:64, once the 'clear varnish' colour goes onto her the contrast between the Caulking and the planks shouldn't be so pronounced  (not too sure which clear coat will be used though, hence all the previous questions to folks about 'Wipe on Poly'..)

Thanks for stopping by Ollie, and a big thanks to all the Likes, tis very much appreciated !

    Photo Update Time... Taaa Daaaa!

Am just about at the level of the Wale on the Starboard side, few more to go on Port to catch up..
I had an extra plank on the stbd bow but wasn't happy with it to popped it straight back off (it needs to be shaped better)

The further down I go the quicker things will move as I move away from Scale Size planks and onto full length ones.

Anyhoo enough chat, here's the main event..

As you can see the template ( beer can ) is more bent than the flag.
But I am happy with the way it came out .

I think I may be approaching the "home stretch". All the sails are hung and filled with wind to the best of my abilities and the colors are aloft.
Now is time for coils and more coils, what a messy crew leaving all the lines everywhere!

I stiffened and shaped all the sails with dilluted white glue. I attached the flags to the halyards with a tiny bead of CA.

I think all thats left to do are the coils, installing the swivel guns and any final clean-up and touch-ups.

Hi Ollie, I was reading over on Rafine's log of the Essex (right now he too is at the rudder stage) where someone mentioned that Copper was used to connect the Rudder to the Hull on Copper Sheathed Hulls, but that on Non Coppered hulls the 'black' iron bands were the norm.. as you have each side different perhaps you should pop over to the log and have a gander! (this was news to me as I would have thought copper too soft to hold the forces of a rudder! but the more I think about it the less that seems to be an issue!)
The relevant pictures and comments are # 438 to # 441  (almost at the very end of his log, certainly on the last page, at least as of right now!

From an aesthetic point of view though the Black looks better than the copper ones, perhaps you could say that you painted the copper!

Speaking of fasteners...did you know that the "screws" through the Keels and the heavy timbers were not threaded..they were just a plain rod....the rod was to carrode in the drilled hole and kind of 'weld" the iron to the wood. Neet
