Hi All, Had to do a little reconstructive surgery earlier today, not too much just that I was unhappy with the fit of some planks against those above them, particularly around the gun-port areas so I popped them off (I originally laid the strake full plank length across the ports, but when I examined them after removal of the Clothes Pegs and Clamps I saw slight gaps, so I rough cut the planks to expose the ports and in so doing made them shorter thus allowing them to sit better)

Still no photos as I don't think anyone will wish to see a bunch of Clamps & Pegs, unless of course someone has a 'Clamp & Peg' fetish! that case just sing out and I'll take a few pikkies for you.. I won't judge.. honestly (you are after all talking to a 'Plank Taster' remember)

It's all go over here on Ballahoo eh!

    More exciting updates later..

Ok Ok you talked me into it here's some Gratuitous Clamp & Peg And Pin Shot's..

The layer visible with the Pins in, is just there to compress the 2nd layer against the top one!

Sanding angle on cant frames, the sander is homemade and way underpowered, but it works slow but sure.

Lining up and setting cant frame to deadwood

Two more cant frames and I can start the bollards and hawse construction

Progressing! couple more years and I will have it done

I have anouther project that I am working on so I am dividing time between them

Hi gang.. i spent another 7 hours today.. my correct rudder parts arrived yesterday..

I finished my scratch built rudder, completed hole through hull to suit..  added hinges and copper etc...

They move nicely and have good travel.. very happy.. took a while though.. i would have preferred to do this stage sooner, but here we are.. can move along now..    Ollie

Here is a few scratch items i made today..  For making the mast ring, i really recommend drilling out the centre hole first, then gluing it to something circular and metallic.. use this as a guide to shape outside of ring.. You will struggle to get it by eye thats for sure..  I made this one out of solid black bean..

I have also decide to added a flickering led that will run off a remote control, i will show you later if it all works out..  So now my cargo hatch is my opening to access batteries.. remote will activate a 4 or 8 hour timer or on/off, flicker/constant.. etc.. The batteries should last a long time.. But it will be easy to enough to get them out as hatch is secured by a very snug fit only,.. I will only light it for show occasions ..

Thanks again all, making hay while the sun shines, actuallty lots of rain, but the shipyard may close for other callings a week or three perhaps, there will be withdrawals no doubt..   Ollie

Thanks so much everyone. Your too kind...  I love the contrasts also and i have soon realised i dont like painting my ship..even though im painting ones side of this one..   I would prefer to use the timbers colours to my best advantage..    Eamonn would you believe i'm taking all these pics with my phone! its 20mp..

Rod, i thought i may only build one ship and take it back up when i am older but i think the bug has bitten hard haha.. I was considering scratch building the Endeavour even if it took me many years.. But alas i am moving house and losing full access to my shed so it will be another kit build and i am leaning towards the HMS Beagle as my girlfriend is related to Charles Darwin (so she believes from records) And my grandfather was right into Darwin also looks like a great build.. also may be the  endeavour yet...

Ok.. Lots of work going on as i have had time off from business..  Adding 10 hours..

It is great to see my scratch built deck items finally start to go on deck!   Windlass installed, bowspit rail, forward hatch/comapnionway, hawse holes etc..

you gotta use a screw driver to keep the tab in............  I see you don't drive the dish washer too much....huh?   I told the admiral,  she better look around for a newer model......this one is getting old!

I did some sanding on the main mast crow's nest...it looks OK.......but it still looks a bit off.

I figured that I would make the fore mast nest......if it comes out any better,  I try to do something with the other one.

while this was drying,  I dolled up the pump a little.

the first set of railings are on

then the top railings went on.   of course I used the same method as the other one,  so I added a little putty on the joints.

the fore mast nest looks a bit off too.........it's going to be close

now that the fore mast nest has been sanded........yea,  it's a little off too.    it looks better than the main mast nest though.   not sure if i want to mess with the main mast nest and risk botching it up.......I'll have to think about it.

This time it will have sea in it and I'm thinking of adding some seagulls.

Rigging is almost done.  Just one or two more little things.  I have a question actually I hope some one can help me with.  Looking at the plans she has some back stays that come from the top of the mast to the back of the ship.  Once I got them on there I noticed how they really get in the way of the boom.  I had heard once of ships that had removable back stays and wondered if that may be the case wit this one. It would make sense since with the way the back stays separate near the bottom like there's a block there.  If that is the case I"m thinking of possibly taking a stay out so that she can tack properly.  I just would like to know if that's right before I do it.

Some rigging completed.  Put in a couple back stays.  The rest is temporary just to hold everything in place for now.

A stupid person's (me) guide for making pulleys, Capt. Steve was nice enough to ask me to share (:-)

My first attempt at using a Proxxon lathe to make pulleys in the early stages looked ok. Then came the part that I had to cut and trim the grooved dowel piece in order to slip the new pulleys into the new blocks I just built; Hmmm no good - they looked weak.

I then noticed that I had a loose cannon wheel lying about that was the same width as my dowel. Eureka, as a solution I then used my Proxxon rotary tool to spin the carriage wheels in order to cut grooves; again weak and inconsistent results.

Then another thought popped in. I could use small deadeyes that are so nicely pre-grooved and then just thin their sides a bit with a rotary tool, and just slip then in; Voilà.

The synapses were responding to absolute frustration with my inability to actually make these silly little monsters; cannibalization seemed to be an approach.

    Regards,

After not posting anything for several weeks here is a brief update about my head rail efforts:
First I ended up not really liking the middle rails shown in the last images, so I finally tore them down. The major reason for that was that the part which was mounted directly on the wall of the ship turned out to be too short and as a consequence the shape of the head timbers would go from concave to convex.  Then I tried to figure out which method of building the head timbers would lead to some decent looking results. I tried the method mentioned by Chuck in the head rail design of the Confederacy as there the head timbers do not consist out of 2 parts each but just one continuous piece. However, the Syren plans do not show any head timber profiles, so that method ended up with too many “degrees of freedom”.  I finally went with the method described in the Syren instructions. With this method one of the challenges consists in generating the perception that each head timber, although constructed out of 2 parts, looks like it is made out of one continuous piece of wood. As I was not quite sure whether I ultimately would get acceptable results I finished middle rail and head timbers just on one side. So the good news is I have finished half of the head timbers. The bad news is I still have to do the other half.

After several weeks of interruption due to traveling I finally resumed work on the head rail of my Syren model.  Upper rails and middle rails are finished, and I started with the head timbers. I am using the method described by Chuck in the instruction book. Building those head timbers is a bit tricky and clearly not my favorite occupation!
Below are different views of the current state of the head rail.

A little update on the head rails: I started with the middle rails as they seem to be the most challenging parts and I wanted to get them out of the way before Christmas. Like the cheeks I made them out of pear wood. Image 1 shows the assembled starboard rail including the hanging knee. To get the right shape I fitted the 3 pieces of the middle rail together as they were temporarily mounted on the hull, but I removed the piece as a whole for the final finishing. Images 2, 3, and 4 show the permanently mounted middle rails from different angles. Image 5 shows a prototype of the upper rail. The final candidate will have the upper end of the molding ending a bit further down to be better in sync with the middle rails.

So, have been on my Red Dragon and here are the results:

First planking of the hull finished. Used the nails from the kit and decided to keep them.

    internal view

After that, sanded, sanded, sanded and got a smooth sensation on sliding my hands across the hull.

Decided to put a movable deck on the bottom of the compartment I´ll show. Everything shall be painted dark red down there.

Began hull´s second layer planking. Did not like the wood shine, but after a little sanding, it goes away. Hope the varnishing don´t bring it back.

As planking the hull is a slow process, began to work on my false deck, opening a hole before planking. After that, lined the bulkheads on the false deck and began to plank. The hole is there for the compartment view.

And that´s it for now. Practicing patience while the glue dries!! =D

    Hello everyone,
Got some work done on the hull, used a dark brown dye to color match the various types of walnut, they are real close now but very dark.  In fact darker then I would like but I think its better the "strips".
I had originally planed to leave the tanganyka above the water line its natural color but while dyeing the upper hull some of the dye ran around to the transom...so all that got dyed too.
Stain may still be added to further even out and add a little depth to the color. The rub starkes are going to be painted black.  Some touch up is needed to the water line where dye ran under the tape,  that's all for now.  As always thanks for your time and attention.

By all means Rod , if you would like to copy them , go for it . For the caulking  I used a pencil as  well . If you do use a pencil to simulate the caulking don't use any sand paper to smooth it down . All it does is smear the graphite all over the planking and is a nightmare to clean up . I used a a razor blade ( you can get a pack of 100 for $20 at www.mytoolstore.com.au ) or you can also use a piece of glass as well and scrap it smooth .I laid the planks in full lengths then marked the scale length when all had dried . The butt joints were made with a chisel  exacto blade that was ground down to the width of the planks . then i simulated the butt joints  with the pencil again not using sand paper but a razor blade to smooth it all out .Make sure the pencil is sharp .
