ulrich reacted to Ol' Pine Tar in Willie L Bennett by Ol' Pine Tar - Model Shipways – Scale 1:32
Tim, Gerty, Russ & Dave B – Thanks and welcome to the fray!
Started the bottom planking. The NWSL Chopper makes cutting the angle on the planks simple and accurate. Towards the bow I glued the planks into the rabbet, let them set, then clamped and glued them to the chine log to get the little “twist” they needed. I used Zap-A-Gap medium CA to glue the planking down. Trimmed the chunks down a bit and glued them in place. Next was some basic shaping and sanding. The planking was a little rough in places so I used a bit of Minwax filler and more sanding. Being the hull will have a painted finished, it seemed important to get a smooth finish rather than trying to preserve the wood grain for staining. Did a bit more sanding, pulled the hull off the moulds and clamped it up in the keel clamp.
Thanks again to everyone for taking time to look and comment!

Nigel,
yes, there are 6 of them included in the etch set.
Have now completed the two bulkheads and the intermediate wall in lengthwise direction (with door) between those bulkheads.
Also some extra belaying Points and the oil-lamp lights and door hinges.
Wish there were more hight in These Areas, but then I would have to Change the Amati plan completely.
It was quite a fiddeling work to get those bulkheads in place, the larger one had to be separated in two parts, and then mounted in place, due to the trapez-like shape.
I would reccomend that These bulkheads are planked equiped with all necessary Fitting out and mounted in place before the hull is planked, it would be much easier.
Nils
also two outer clamps port and starboard to the twin double door bulkhead
the intermediate space between the bulkheads
great cabin Forward bulkhead
the upper Portion of the first bulkhead Need to trimmed off Flush when glue is dry

ulrich reacted to NMBROOK in MORDAUNT 1681 by NMBROOK - Euromodel - 1:60 - Beyond Bashed
I have started to fit the upper hull starting from the stern forwards.By notching back the temporary stringers,I am able to use plain pear strip overwidth, rather than trying to develop individual shapes for each of the frame sections. There is a not very clear photo showing this. Each piece was fitted with an obechi infill individually.By using the digital vernier to check running dimensions as I went along, this avoided any accumulative build up of error. The obechi was thickness sanded(using a sanding block )to suit each location. There is variation in frame spacing due to working with the constraints of bulkhead positions, but it is so small,it unnoticable to the eye.I have set the obechi 2mm above the base of the upper trim(bottom of the ebony planking). This is to allow fine adjustment of the ends and then capping with 3mm boxwood.Doing it this way means no tool marks will be visible on the frames from shaping the ends of the obechi. This complete section has been trimmed 3mm below the cap rail so I can fit a square pear 'binding' stringer to tie everything together.I got this idea from Dr Mike and makes alot of sense to tie all these laminations together. It also provides a sanding guide for upper frame thickness. This will be pinned later into the top of some of the frames for additional strength. The length of this upper edge is overlong at present and steps down to a lower level, which will be cut back when the next section is complete. My technique just leaves a section to sand back when the temporary stringers are removed.I am considering replacing these afterwards, but bolting to the hull with M2 bolts as this area will be planked over.I am also considering using threaded rods as well to keep the upper hull the right distance apart as work progresses.
Kind Regards
Nigel

Hi Chris
I think not only does it increase the glue area but also the rigidity. When I used to build on open bulkheads all the time, using kit 1.5mm first planking and the 1mm second,I used to find the hull flexed when sanding. You only have 2.5mm of material, take away the amount removed from sanding and in my opinion you are left with a very thin hull.As I mentioned earlier in the log,if the model gets exposed to increased humidity for any length of time then dries out again, this can result in the bulkheads 'ghosting through' in the finished profile. As I build models to outlive me many times over and if sold on have no control of the environment they reside in,I like to adopt a little extra 'insurance'.It is more work, but time is saved by not having to remove much material when sanding planking.Sovereign was double planked over a birch ply infilled hull,The two layers of planking over the top only needed the minimum amount of work to sand smooth.IMHO it is well worth the extra effort unless of course you are building a POF or model with many bulkheads where the planking is adequately supported.
Kind Regards
Nigel

Hi Nils
The infill is my own addition. The kit is open bulkheads and double planking.I am using single planking of scale thicknesses due to the exposed framing on the upper hull. The planking will be spliced at the waterline,Ebony above and boxwood below. The bulkheads would not provide the necessary support for this procedure with single planking .I would have probably infilled anyway as it is my own preference but also there a many complex curves to this hull and to ensure everything is faired properly this is easier in the long run.
Kind Regards

ulrich reacted to Pete Jaquith in Newsboy 1854 by Pete Jaquith - Model Shipways - Brigantine
The brigantine Newsboy was designed by Dennison J. Lawlor of Chelsea, MA (designer of the very successful pilot schooners Dancing Feather, Hesper, and Phantom) for owners Dabney & Cunningham of Boston. Newsboy was built at the Joshua C. Adams and Elisha Brown shipyard in Owl’s Head, ME where she was launched in June, 1854. She had a length of 111 feet, beam of 27 feet, depth of 12 feet, and tonnage of 290 tons. While described as a brigantine, the rig is more accurately described as a hermaphrodite brig because there were no square sails on the main mast.
The Newsboy was engaged in the triangular trade: carrying lumber and manufactured goods from New England to the Mediterranean; transporting wine, oil, and fruits to the West Indies; and returning to New England with rum, molasses, and sugar. The Monthly Nautical Magazine said “having a reputation for speed, by wringing reluctant laurels from her competitors who have chanced to fall in company with her at sea….she does her designers no discredit…her log will speak for itself”.
The model is built to a scale of 3/16” to the foot (1:64) based on an old Model Shipways solid hull kit and plans by George F. Campbell. The model is plank on solid construction, with built up bulwarks, planked decks and topsides, coppered bottom, and scratch built deck furniture/fittings. Limited commercial fittings will be utilized where appropriate, and the rigging will be proportional linen line with Warner Woods’ blocks. The Brigantine Newsboy is my 4th wooden ship model and the 2nd in my series of mid 1800’s American merchant sailing ship models.
As time permits, I will attempt to post the high points of my previous MSW Build Log.

ulrich reacted to Model Mariner in Berlin 1674 by Model Mariner - scale 1:64 - Navy Board style
the majority of the deckbeams is built in and I have started to put in the carlings and ledges:
forward part of the maindeck with view to the fore mast partner, fore Knight, riding bitts (cross beam not yet installed) and the hatch for the anchor cable:
main mast partner and main hatch:
aft part of the main deck with a view to a ladder down to the hold, the keelson is visible just forward of the ladder:
All these pictures are scans of relatively small photographs (taken long before I had a digital camera), therefore the quality is not that good
